Indian Summer on the Moselle

Indian Summer on the Moselle

When Indian summer begins in North America, the forests transform into a colourful sea of red, yellow and orange, while the sky turns an almost unnatural shade of blue. Admittedly, the Moselle is not Canada, and the sky is not always so immaculately blue in autumn in Germany. However, the colours in the vineyards and forests along the Moselle rival this natural spectacle – and you don’t need to take a long-haul flight to see them! As a sustainable travel blog, we naturally prefer to support alternatives to flying to the other side of the world when our own region can offer just as much beauty. To help you make the most of your trip to the Moselle region, I’ve put together a few excursion tips.

Here are our top tips for enjoying an Indian summer on the Moselle

  1. Wine: If the Moselle region is known for one thing, it is its picturesque rivers, nature and, of course, wine. In other words, you should definitely plan to visit one of the wine festivals that still take place in October and, in some cases, even in November as Federweißerfest. Or at least plan a wine tasting session.

  1. Hiking: Admittedly, it’s not the most original idea, but what better way to embrace the autumn spirit and take in the beautiful landscape than with a walk or short hike through vineyard terraces, past small wine villages and castles? Here you will find a selection of routes.

  1. Boating on the Moselle: Enjoying the landscape from the water is an even more relaxing experience. There are various options available, ranging from round trips to day trips and themed cruises. One particular highlight is the ‘Stella Noviomagi‘, a detailed replica of a Roman wine ship departing from Neumagen-Dhron.

  1. City trip to Trier or Luxembourg: If you need a change of scenery after a few days in nature, we recommend a city trip to Trier or Luxembourg. Both cities are well worth a visit, brimming with culture and interesting places to discover. Both cities are very well connected and easy to reach by public transportation—or would a bike tour be more your thing?

Sustainable accommodation

We recommend the Lifestyleresort Zum Kurfürsten as a sustainable accommodation option for overnight stays. It boasts a spacious spa area with several pools and saunas (all of which are designed according to a Feng Shui water concept and powered by eco-friendly energy). Here you will find a team that is happy to give you tips for excursions. And you can relax completely in the wellness area in the evening. It’s the perfect place to stay for your trip to the Moselle region.

I hope this article has inspired you to experience your own Indian summer on the Moselle! If you already have favourite places in the region for autumn, feel free to share them in the comments!
