Use watermelon skin

Watermelon is a fruit where you can eat everything, including the seeds – except the dark green skin! However, most people eat only the sweet red flesh and toss the white rind in the garbage. But you can save that part of the watermelon for next time and use it in a wonderful way.

Use the rind in salads

The white of the rind tastes like cucumber. It’s also nice and crisp and fresh. Trust me, once you get over the idea of eating a sweet fruit, you’ll appreciate the taste in a whole new way!

Another easy way to use the rind is in smoothies. It goes great in both fruit and green smoothies – and of course, melon smoothies 🙂

Watermelon skin benefits – good reasons why to eat it

  1. Nutrients: The white layer is considered one of the best sources of citrulline. Citrulline is converted by the body into the amino acid arginine, which is thought to improve blood flow and help build muscle. Watermelon rinds are also high in fiber, vitamin A and other vitamins.
  2. Helps prevent food waste: In Germany alone, twelve million tons of food – much of it still edible – is thrown away every year. According to the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, 35 percent of our household waste consists of fruit and vegetables. By eating the peel, you help reduce waste.

By the way: You can also eat the peel of lemons, oranges, and other citrus fruits, as discussed in the next Insight:
