How to eat citrus fruits with the peel

How to eat citrus fruits with the peel

Eat citrus fruits with the peel? That is possible? Of course! The citrus fruits from your own garden, like here in Palestine, are safe to eat with the peel on. How and why I show you now.

Full of valuable phytonutrients (secondary plant compounds)

Oranges, lemons, grapefruits, and other citrus fruits are best known as delicious sources of vitamin C. Fittingly, they are ripe in winter! But did you know that the white parts and peel also contain healthy compounds?

  • The white between fruit and peel is packed with healthy flavonoids, which are thought to have antioxidant properties. Observational studies also suggest anti-inflammatory and antibiotic effects.
  • German consumer organizations recommend that mandarins and oranges are best eaten when they still have some white on them.

Fruit salad with orange zest or kumquats

Kumquats are small mini oranges and a great choice for citrus with the peel because they are always eaten with the peel. They are perfect for a fruit salad (such as with apples, bananas, pineapple, persimmons, grapes, or other seasonal fruits). Alternatively, you can add organic oranges with peel (tiny cubes) to the fruit salad, which gives the whole flavor a special kick.

Try lemon juice with honey as a dressing and toasted hazelnuts and almonds as a topping.
