Viva Magenta is the Pantone color 2023. It says: back to nature!

Pantone Color 2023 is designed to “invoke the forces of nature” within us. The color chosen by the world’s most important color institute reflects the current mood of society.

Viva magenta: Nature as the antithesis of technology

A quick look back to 2021: the corona pandemic had been going on for a year, and it was a time of “persistent uncertainty”. Here, Pantone “Illuminating” presented a fresh shade of yellow, which (also according to the Color Trend Institute) should be chosen in combination with gray. The message: security (gray) combined with hope (yellow).

Two years later, in 2023: Instead of security and hope, we now long for “life and rebellious spirit”. This is what the color Viva Magenta is meant to express.

It also stands for the fact that in the age of technology, people long for nature, and that nature is a source of strength and inspiration.

Natural dye cochineal is not vegan

According to Pantone, Viva Magenta is “based on the red of cochineal, a particularly valuable natural dye”. However, the dye is anything but vegan. In fact, cochineal scale insects are crushed to make the real chimney red. 🙁

Nowadays, the dye is also produced synthetically.

Pantone Color 2023: Using Viva Magenta in Interior Design

Viva Magenta is strong, bold, but not aggressive. In interior design, it can be used for large areas (walls, carpets) or as a decorative element.

The color is compatible with natural materials such as wood, indoor plants. It can be combined with beige tones, white, light blue and green.

At Davis Taylor Design in Los Angeles, a combination with hot pink, lime (18-0330) or golden lime (16-0543) is recommended.

Tip: Something as simple as wall paint can give your kitchen, bathroom or entryway a whole new look.

You can buy Viva Magenta paint, using the paint mixing service at your local hardware or paint store – just make sure it is environmentally friendly (e.g. water-based emulsion paint without solvents or paints that have been awarded an environmental seal).
