Species protection on your doorstep – the Hour of Winter Birds begins (January 5 to 7)

From January 5 to 7, you can take part in the nationwide “Stunde der Wintervögel” (Hour of Winter Birds) and help protect the species. Crested tits are easily recognized by their cheeky “hairstyle”. IMAGE: Erik_Karits | Pixabay

What is the Hour of Winter Birds?

For the 14th time, NABU and the Bavarian State Association for Bird and Nature Conservation (LBV) are calling on people to count garden birds for an hour and document their findings online. The resulting data will be used for a scientific study of the population. Ultimately, you are participating in a major conservation project. It is only by taking stock that changes can be seen, and it can be determined whether a species is endangered or not.

What do I have to do?

Sit in your garden, on your balcony or in the park for an hour and count all the birds you see. If you see the same species more than once, record only the birds you see at the same time. For example, if you see three sparrows at the same time, and later see two more, and then one more, you will report three.

Enter your observations in the online form.

How much bird knowledge do I need to have to participate in the Winter Bird Hour?

Don’t worry – you don’t need to be an ornithologist. This campaign is about common birds like blackbirds and bluetits.

You can find the 35 most common winter birds in Germany at a glance on the NABU website. This should be enough to avoid confusing a bullfinch with a robin.

You can also use a bird song app like the one I reviewed here:
