Volcanic lava tubes among the Seven Wonders of the World 2024

After the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, there are the Seven Wonders of the Modern World and now also the Seven Wonders of the World of 2024 – as determined by BBC travel journalist Rob Crossan. They include an underground network of lava tubes on the Canary Island of Tenerife. © lic0001 Stock.Adobe.com

Seven Wonders of the World for Travelers

There are monuments – man-made and natural – that simply leave you in awe. For CondĂ© Nast Traveller, travel journalist and radio presenter Rob Crossan has selected seven wonders of the world that people still don’t fully understand. The twist is that he has chosen mostly natural objects, such as the migration of the Arctic tern from Northern Europe to Antarctica.

Lava tubes in Tenerife

During his travels, the volcanic lava tubes on the Canary Island of Tenerife were particulary impressing. Beneath hotels, golf courses, and landscaped gardens lies a labyrinth of lava tubes. It was  probably formed about 27,000 years ago during a volcanic eruption of Pico Viejo.

Only about 30% of these tubes are explored, and the crazy thing is that previously undiscovered species have been found in them. For example interesting insects like completely white spiders and cockroaches without wings or eyes!

The number of visitors is limited to 1,000 per month. Only 250 meters are open to the public. But these winding tunnels full of branches and side streets are very impressive.

If you want to go on vacation to Tenerife, we recommend our local Green PearlsⓇ, the OCÉANO Health Spa Hotel
