What makes oats so healthy?
Not only are oats rich in vitamins B1 and B6, fiber and protein, they also contain important minerals such as magnesium, calcium and potassium. It strengthens the immune system, promotes healthy skin, and can even lower blood pressure. It is a true all-rounder that reaches its full health-promoting potential when soaked beforehand, as in porridge.
Why you should soak your oatmeal
This is because the phytic acid in oats binds minerals and makes them harder to absorb. Soaking them for at least 30 minutes reduces the phytic acid content and makes them easier to absorb. It doesn’t matter if you soak them in milk, water, or dairy alternatives. However, we recommend using dairy alternatives because water can taste a little bland and alternatives often have a better eco-balance than traditional cow’s milk (read more in our plant-based drinks eco-check).
Is oatmeal sustainable?
First, oats are a native grain that requires very short transportation distances. Second, as Utopia reports, oats require little extra water to grow and are also suitable for sustainable crop rotation. The term refers to the staggered cultivation of different crops on the same arable land. This leads to a differentiated build-up and breakdown of nutrients retained in the soil, as well as reducing the incidence of plant diseases and some pests while increasing yields. The targeted application of oats also improves erosion control. Although the sustainability of the flakes ultimately depends on the product you buy, here is a list of the flakes tested by Ökotest.
