Darmstadt is definitely worth a visit, whether it’s to see the UNESCO World Heritage Site Mathildenhöhe, stroll along the Rosenhöhe, or visit the Hessian State Museum. And of course, no city trip is complete without a good meal or at the very least a good cup of coffee. To make your search a little easier, here are 5 tips for sustainable cafes and restaurants in Darmstadt. | Image: lapping via Pixabay
My recommendations: 5 sustainable restaurants and cafes in Darmstadt:
-
Das Radieschen
The Radieschen is located a bit outside of the city center in the Darmstadt-Eberstadt district, but is easily accessible by tram or car. Ahead of its time, it has been offering one of the best vegetarian and vegan cuisines in the Darmstadt-Dieburg area at a fair price since 1996. The ingredients are almost exclusively organic and the restaurant is also bio-certified. I would recommend everyone to book early as it is always very busy. Which, by the way, is easy to do via their website. -
Tibits
Some of you may already be familiar with the Tibits chain from Switzerland, where the family business has been operating since 2000. In 2019, it opened its first restaurant in Germany on the Alnatura campus in Darmstadt, where it offers hot and cold vegetarian and vegan dishes that change daily and seasonally. It is also certified organic and, in addition to the restaurant, offers take-away during the week. -
Mondo Daily
If you’re feeling hungry or in need of a quick bite, I recommend the Mondo Daily snack bar right in the center of town. The lunch menu changes daily and has a good selection of vegan and vegetarian dishes. The menu also states next to the dishes whether they are organic, gluten-free and/or Fairtrade. -
Hofgut Oberfeld
The organic and Demeter-certified farm shop Oberfeld with its own café is only a 15-20 minute walk from Mathildenhöhe. The idyllic farm is the perfect place to relax with a fair trade coffee, lemonade or homemade cake and escape the hustle and bustle of the city, especially in the summer. It’s also right next to Rosenhöhe, which in my opinion is the most beautiful park in Darmstadt, and I highly recommend a walk there after your cake. -
Woodrich Café
For a quick coffee while sightseeing, I recommend Café Woodrich, right in the center of town. They serve specialty coffees (you can find out exactly what they arehere), homemade cakes, bowls, and more. If milk alternatives are not your thing, they even have fresh local milk for your coffee. The only downside is that Woodrich is always busy, but don’t worry, the coffee also tastes great TO-GO at the nearby Theaterplatz.
