Water Touring – a Trend close to Nature

Water touring is like hiking – except instead of walking, you’re on a boat. Lakes and rivers are ideal. In this Insight, we take a closer look at this trend. ©Helmut Schmidt | Stock.Adobe.com

Nature tourism on the water

For water hiking, you usually take a canoe, kayak, or other type of rowboat. It is important that it does not have a motor (otherwise it would not be “hiking”). You propel the boat with your own strength and carry your equipment and provisions in waterproof containers.

A water hike usually lasts several days. Some people travel with tents, others stay in sustainable accommodation and some even spend the night in the boats.

Suitable locations in Germany include the Mecklenburg Lake District (where I have already done some water hiking with a tent), the Feldberg Lake District or the UNESCO Spreewald Biosphere Reserve, where our Green PearlsⓇ partner, the Strandhaus Boutique Resort & Spa in Lübben, is located directly on the water.

Important rules for water hiking

In our blog article on sustainable and environmentally friendly water sports, we have summarized 8 rules for environmentally friendly behavior on the water according to the guidelines of the German Sailing Association. The most important of these are

  1. Avoid sensitive areas: reed beds and sandbanks are an important habitat for a variety of animals. You should avoid these areas as much as possible.
  2. Follow the rules of nature reserves: Make sure you are aware of all regulations concerning wilderness camping, fire, docking, etc. before you go.
  3. Avoid litter: Don’t leave any garbage in the water or on land (in fact, it’s best to take a bag with you to pick up the garbage that others have irresponsibly left behind).
  4. Inform yourself about the wildlife: You should be aware of any important bird migration or spawning periods that occur along your route so that you can plan your trip accordingly.
  5. Take photos without flash: Observe wild animals in peace and do not disturb them.

In general, water touring or river hiking is a great way to experience and enjoy the blue spaces of our planet, to calm down and recharge your batteries. The physical activity and fresh air are also good for your health.
