Series: Sustainable products from eco-hotels, Part 5: Handmade Himalayan soap

The eco-friendly, hand-scooped himalayan soap is vegan and chemical free. This means it helps to conserve water, which is very important to our partner The Pavilions Himalayas – The Farm ⒸThe Bodhi Press

Please do not bring any shower gel to Nepal!

We recently spoke to our Green PearlsⓇ partner The Pavilions Himalayas – The Farm in Nepal. The topic was whether guests undermine the sustainable efforts of eco-hotels. Rajiv from the resort replied that he was most concerned about guests bringing their own shower gel and shampoo. These can contain microplastics and pollutants that contaminate the groundwater that feeds the surrounding organic landscape.

Organic farming is a passion project at The Pavilions Himalayas and the food produced is used in the kitchen.

Only natural soaps

The eco-friendly resort offers only chemical-free products in the bathrooms, such as handmade Himalayan soap from the region.

There are also Nepalese paper soaps made from Lokta paper and soaked in a natural solution of soap nuts – environmentally friendly wet wipes, so to speak. However, these are not available in shops.

What you can buy, however, is Himalayan soap in bars. For example, ‘Good Karma’ with coconut oil, turmeric and green tea. It’s not exactly the same as the soap used in the resort, but it’s similar.

  • Where to buy: US$7.45 from The Bodhi Press. In addition to handmade soaps, Lokta paper products are also available.
