Series: Sustainable products from eco-hotels, part 6: Fishing net carpets

„Even though our carpets get stepped on, we still pay a lot of attention to sustainability, design and the concept behind when selecting them.“ This is how Hotel Luise explains its decision to buy carpet tiles made from fishing nets. Like the Lifestylehotel SAND on the Baltic Sea, it relies on carpets from the Interface brand. IMAGE ⓇLifestylehotel SAND

Sustainable carpets from Interface

The international carpet company Interface actively embraces recycling by producing carpets from recycled materials and designing them to be reusable at the end of their lifecycle.

When selecting carpets for the Lifestylehotel SAND at the Baltic Sea, it was important to them to use not only pre-consumer PET (plastic left over from production), but also post-consumer PET (plastic that has actually been in circulation as plastic bottles, etc.).

The Hotel Luise in Erlangen, Germany, has several Interface carpet tiles in different areas of the hotel. We find the “Net Effect” carpet particularly interesting, which pays homage to the oceans not only in its appearance but also in the material used, which contains old fishing nets.

Fishing nets make up a large proportion of the plastic in the world’s oceans. Because plastic does not biodegrade, it continues to break down into tiny particles of microplastics that enter our food chain through the water. Wherever possible, and especially with single-use products, you should avoid plastic. Read this blog post for tips on how to travel plastic-free.
