Reading Retreat – A time out just for you and your book

The book is on the bedside table, the intention to read is made – and yet after a long day, we often prefer to reach for the remote control or smartphone. In our hectic everyday lives, reading often takes a back seat. If you feel the same way, then a “reading retreat” could be just the thing for you. BILD: ©tunedin | Stock.Adobe.com

What lies behind the trend?

Reading retreats are more than just “reading on vacation. Typically, a small group of book lovers gather in a comfortable setting for a weekend or a few days. The common goal is to focus on reading, to get away from the stresses of everyday life, and to share thoughts with like-minded people. There is usually no “required reading. Everyone simply brings the books that have long been on their own lists. That way, everyone gets their money’s worth, and a rich exchange of ideas and opinions ensues.

You can book retreats on sites like BookRetreat.com, or simply plan one yourself with friends, acquaintances, or like-minded people from your social media bubble. If this sounds like just the right thing to do for your next weekend getaway with friends, here are a few tips.

Tips for planning a reading retreat

#1 Alone or together?

Before you start planning, ask yourself the basic question: Do you want to be alone or do you want to engage with others? If it’s the latter, ask your friends or put out a call on social media sites like Instagram. You might be surprised at how many like-minded people there are.

#2 Find the right accommodation

This is where you decide where you feel most comfortable reading: a rustic vacation apartment in the countryside? A spa hotel with spa breaks? Or maybe a full-board hideaway where you don’t have to worry about a thing? Anything is possible – the main thing is that your book finally gets the attention it deserves.

#3 The book question

Of course, you also have to consider the most important question: What do you want to read? Do you think it’s better if everyone reads the same book, or do you prefer variety? By the way, the environment can certainly influence the choice of book – Hemingway under a southern sun? I think that’s perfect.

#4 Plan your day

Do you want to spend all your time reading, or do you want to take in some cultural highlights along the way? Maybe there is a museum, etc. that fits the theme of the book? Or is it set in a nearby city? You have to decide what your ideal day looks like, but I would recommend scheduling your meetings in the morning or evening. That way, the social aspect is not neglected and you can discuss what you have read as a group.

#5 Packing

When packing, remember that this is a book tour. That means uncomfortable evening clothes out of the suitcase and cozy socks in. Snacks and tea? Yes. A small pillow and sweatpants/leggings? Absolutely. Pack anything that makes reading more enjoyable.

After writing this article, I am now planning one of my own, as unfortunately not one, but several books are gathering dust next to my bed. I hope I have inspired you to do the same! If so, feel free to share your experiences in the comments below.
