Not long now – our annual vacation at the Relais del Maro in Borgomaro is around the corner. When we spend our first vacation here six years ago, we knew after five days that we will certainly come back, but every year? When I was younger, I always thought traveling twice to the same place implies to be old. However, the experience shows there are places one can travel to and always discover new things and at the same time have the feeling to come home. Thanks to the wonderful host family Scalambrin we got to know a region that still is authentic and unspoiled. The small hotel is located in the village Borgomaro and the first feeling coming to one’s mind when driving through all the small villages to Borgomaro, is: Here time has stood still.
Before our first holiday in 2013, I had only read about the concept Albergo Diffuso and always found it exciting. The guests stay at the main house or in one of the houses in the village next door with the local people. Whether one stays at the main house or in the houses within the small village, every room at the small eco hotel Relais del Maro is designed with so much love to the detail. A home away from home, it’s the way we feel every time we stay at this magic place.
Elena, her mother Piera, father Claudio and the wonderful team look after their guests’ every need throughout their stay.

My quite personal highlight, although I am a breakfast grouch in true life, is the breakfast: a small buffet with regional dishes and home-baked delicacies from Mama Piera, crowned by a perfect cappuccino made by Elena or Martina. Breakfast is served on the terrace of the garden, with a gorgeous view on the church with its churchyard and the Ligurian houses – from which some look like they immediately collapse. The riverbed is a habitat for swans, ducks, toads and frogs. Slowly life awakes in Borgomaro and one can observe the hustle and bustle of the street.

Viola, the good spirit of the house and onboard from the beginning, runs upstairs, and downstairs to spoil every guest – there is no better way to start a holiday.

Also, after breakfast the garden with its pool invites for staying, which we often do on the first day to calm down, relax and finally arrive with all senses. Then we enjoy the tranquility and at noon a tasty lunch with a good wine and slowly the mindset changes to vacation. The next days do not get boring, there is a lot to discover: The area around Imperia offers a lot for everybody’s taste. A must is of course the lively port city Imperia which by the way is also vivid in winter, including the visit of a bagno – for us always a time travel in our childhood 🙂

You find other well-chosen tips below. Elena and the team love to answer all questions and definitely have much more valuable tips for you.
For us the Relais del Maro has become our second home and every year we are thrilled to our next vacation.

Sassello – our favorite
Located at the border to Piedmont on the way to Acqui Terme, Sassello is famous for its Amaretti and here you can also find the butcher Giacobbe, a paradise for those loving regional meat products that by the way you will also find on the breakfast buffet of the Relais del Maro.
