Capsule Wardrobe – my experience and tips

Capsule Wardrobe – my experience and tips

Only 37 items in the closet – this is the Capsule Wardrobe. Advocates of sustainability and minimalism use it to organize their wardrobes. And I’m one of them. Here I’ll tell you how it works – and – how you can cheat a little 🙂 IMAGE: ©Alex (created with AI) | Stock.Adobe.com

How does Capsule Wardrobe work?

With a Capsule Wardrobe, you have only 30 to 40 items in your wardrobe per season (summer, winter). Underwear and accessories such as scarves, hats, etc. are not counted. Ideally, the items should be of high quality (able to withstand frequent washing) and easy to mix and match.

Create a travel wardrobe

Because you can create a variety of outfits with just a few items, a capsule wardrobe is ideal for traveling.

What are the advantages of a minimalist wardrobe?

Instead of a cluttered closet with seemingly nothing to wear, with the Capsule Wardrobe you have a well-organized closet and always something to wear!

The minimalist wardrobe also gives you

  • More time, because you don’t have to think and search so long in the morning
  • More order
  • More money, because you don’t have to buy new clothes as often
  • Conserve resources by not buying unnecessary clothes

What clothes does a Capsule wardrobe contain?

Which clothes are suitable for the Capsule Wardrobe depends entirely on your style. And this is one of the biggest mistakes newbies make. Jeans, a white blouse, and a leather jacket or the “plain black” are classics that are always mentioned – but do they really match your style?

Common wardrobe mistakes and how to avoid them

1. Mistake: Imitating Instagram and Pinterest Style: You see beautiful capsule wardrobes on social media – but are “gray, black, pink” really your colors? It’s not about finding a new style, it’s about optimizing your own style for minimalism.

2. Mistake: Buying everything new: Buying 33 new Capsule pieces can’t be the point. The goal is to consume less, not more. That’s why the first step is to clean out your closet and limit yourself to your favorites.

3. Mistake: Perfectionism: Not everything has to be “right” the first time. On the contrary, a minimalist style allows your wardrobe to grow with you. Eventually, you will get a feel for whether you can wear this piece often and combine it with the rest of your fashion.

Capusle Wardrobe – my tip for “cheating”

The first time I used this method to declutter my wardrobe, I was a bit too strict about it being exactly 37 items. For example, I have a lot of sports leggings and it motivates me to wear different colors for sports depending on my mood. Of course, 2 pairs of black leggings will do, but they don’t motivate me as much…

So my tip is: create different (smaller) wardrobes – one for sports, one for business, one for leisure – and I haven’t counted the few fancy dresses for weddings, etc. – they just have to hang around until the next occasion!
