Not eating everything – or choosing not to – can make traveling a bit more challenging. That’s why we have tips for you on how to prepare for your journey as a vegetarian and vegan so that you can enjoy your trip.

I remember being in Dresden a few years ago with a friend. It was a cold winter and at a small health food store we stocked up on vegan spreads and cooled them between the two old window panes. And when we found a snack bar offering vegan burgers, we were in food heaven.

Since then, a lot has changed: vegetable and vegan products can be found in every supermarket. During my city trips I can choose between dozens of Veggie-Restaurants and also in hotels there’s a range of plant-based meals to choose from.

Being vegan in a foreign country? Easy thanks to Vegefied and Co.!

Despite all these food offers, I prefer to take a small travel provision with me, at least for the flight or the train ride. I will never forget my growling stomach a few years ago on my flight to China: I ordered vegan food and while all other passengers received a sandwich, I got an apple. Well, since then I always take at least a cereal- or a fruit bar or some cookies with me.

When being in a new city, I love Instagram and Co. to find new shops and restaurants. And of course, Vegefied: Just type in where you’re traveling and you immediately get lots of suggestions where to eat – with directions and pictures. You can also search for the type of cuisine or find a kid-friendly place as well as the best location for brunch or cocktails.

In the Vegefied Facebook group, you can also get suggestions from the community before or during your trip. This is perfect for travelers like me who love to roam the streets in unknown cities on a culinary expedition.

From the Facebook group to a worldwide recommendation platform

For Vegefied founder Sneha, it all started with Facebook: “Actually, it was just a fun Facebook group my friend and I started before going to Japan. Within a few months thousands of people had joined in and started asking each other for recommendations.” Seeing the need of getting good and tested recommendations made Sneha found Vegefied. “People can discover and share everything from taco trucks to Michelin star meals in far flung corners of the world”, explains Sneha.

Especially Asia is worth a visit for vegetarians and vegans- in case the locals understand you. On the mentioned trip to China, my friend translated for me and ordered everything without meat, while the waitress gladly responded: “No meat? You mean more meat! Of course, we bring you more meat!”

Even in countries where meat traditionally plays a big role, you can be surprised: In South Africa people love to have a barbecue at every occasion and celebrating the “braai” with the whole family on the weekends. Naturally, with a lot of meat. Nevertheless, even back in 2012, I discovered many vegetarian restaurants and even one in Johannesburg, where only raw vegan food was served. And believe me: I still fantasize about the raw pizza!

Eating plant based at our hotels? Sure thing!

Of course, nutrition plays an important role in all of our Green Pearls® partner hotels as well. The hoteliers always choose regional, seasonal and organic foods. In addition, you will find everywhere an open ear to your needs, whether you prefer to eat vegetarian, vegan, gluten or lactose free – if it is not already on the menu anyway. In our next blog post, we’ll show you what our hotels around the world have to offer – be curious and don’t read the blog post hungry, that much we can already tell!
