We don’t use fabric softener at home. One reason is to protect the environment, and the other is that my boyfriend just doesn’t care for the way it feels.
But especially with towels or cozy sweatshirts, I miss the coziness of the extra soft fabric because after a few months of washing without fabric softener, even the coziest materials don’t feel as nice. In my search for an alternative, I came across dryer balls. And lo and behold, there are many local start-ups that sell eco-friendly dryer balls. Most of them are made from felted New Zealand sheep’s wool, which is particularly suitable for this purpose.
In the dryer, the felt balls serve two purposes: The laundry dries faster because the air can circulate better. It also makes the laundry softer. And if you want, you can also add a few drops of essential oil to the balls so that the fresh laundry smells especially good.
In any case, we think that the dryer balls are a good investment — and definitely better for the environment than fabric softener.
