Slowly days are getting longer and, in the morning, birds are already singing. Now it is time to hang up new nesting boxes. If you follow these three tips, a young tit or other bird will soon move in with you:
- the nest boxes should be hung at a height of at least two to three meters, so that martens and cats have no chance of predation.
- the entrance hole should not face the weather side (west), nor should the nest box be exposed to the blazing sun for any length of time (south). Orientation to the east or southeast is perfect.
- to fix the nesting box, use stainless aluminum nails or strong wire hangers that will not damage the tree.
And for the next season, the nesting box can be left hanging right away. Then birds and insects can use the place for roosting or hibernation (Source: Nabu Baden-Württemberg).
