Effects of dairy alternatives

Effects of dairy alternatives

Do you use cow’s milk or do you prefer to use an alternative? Since I do not tolerate lactose, I have been dealing with the issue for some time and almost only use dairy alternatives. The offer keeps getting bigger, but you can get soy drink, almond drink, oat drink and rice drink almost everywhere nowadays.

I recently found an interesting article about this, which I would like to talk to you about. A format of the public media in Germany looked at the health and environmental effects of milk alternatives.

This also involved a study by scientists at Oxford University. Unsurprisingly, the environmental balance of milk alternatives is better. They produce significantly fewer greenhouse gases. They also tend to score better on the other factors, with one exception: almond and rice drinks, which have a very high water consumption.

An impressive comparison: compared to semi-fat cow’s milk, oat milk has around 70% less impact on the climate and uses just under 40% of the energy in production. Land use is almost 80% less.

I found these numbers very impressive. Which milk alternative do you prefer?
