Each of us throws nearly 78 kilograms of food into the garbage each year. In view of the general food shortage, this is even more alarming. Especially since a lot of it doesn’t even end up in the organic waste garbage or the compost, but simply in the residual waste.
Be honest: a lot of it could certainly be avoided in your household, too, couldn’t it? If you don’t know where to start, here are some of my tried and tested tips for you.
My tips against food waste
- Think before you buy
Avoiding food waste starts with shopping. Will I really manage to eat it all? Will I maybe go home for the weekend? Will it last that long? You can ask yourself all these questions before or during shopping. A nice side effect: If you buy less unnecessary food, you save money 😉
- Correct Storage
Find out where and how to store your food properly or try it out yourself. Cheese, for example, can be frozen easily. And bread lasts forever in the refrigerator, even in summer.
- Use Leftovers
No matter how well you plan, sometimes you can’t avoid having something left over. My top 3 to give dishes a new lease on life: stir-fry, gratinate, and well … gratinate! Everything is better when you put it in the oven with cheese (substitute).
Of course, you can also combine several leftover meals into a whole new one. And next dinner, check out what you still have flying around and get creative 😉
- Swap and give away
Going on vacation and the fridge is still full? Ask your neighbors, friends, family and so on if they want something.
- Kompost und Biotonne
If you do have to throw something away, at least do it in a way that keeps it in the cycle. This can be your own compost or worm garbage can ( also available for flats) or the organic waste garbage can.
Bonus: Get involved in the fight against food waste
And last but not least: Only together we are strong and can make a difference. Educate your friends and family when they are throwing away food. Ask supermarkets what they are doing to prevent food waste. Get involved with foodsharing, too good to go or other initiatives that fight food waste.
Do you have any tips? Then tell me and everyone else about them 🙂
