As a child, the greatest thing for me in the summer was to roam the forest and pick the black fruits from the bushes. Each berry was a surprise package: was it sweet or tart or still sour and unripe, so that my face involuntarily grimaced.
To this day, I love blackberry season. There is rarely a year that goes by without the smell of blackberry jam in my kitchen and me getting one or two tops full of blackberry juice.
Facts about black berries
The black berries originate from Eastern Europe and North America. Botanically, by the way, they belong to the rose family.
Most importantly, they are super healthy, have lots of nutritional value and even healing properties. They have an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect and are therefore suitable for diseases of the mouth, for example.
What can you do with black berries?
Blackberries can be used in extremely versatile ways: Jam, compote, in cakes or as a berry topping for yogurt or pannacotta. I like to freeze bags of berries during the season so I can fall back on them in the winter. Although … usually they don’t even last until then, instead they are already consumed and eaten …
By the way: Not only the fruits of the blackberry are delicious. From the fermented leaves you can make a really good black tea substitute 😉
