World Tourism Day – Rethink Tourism

World Tourism Day – Rethink Tourism

Do you know that World Tourism Day exists? The World Tourism Day was founded back in 1980 by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), which annually nominates a host country and gives the day a new focus with a changing theme each year. This year, with the topic World Tourism Day- Rethink Tourism, the 2022 host country is Bali.

In the past few years, I have noticed a significant change in my attitude toward travel planning, specifically the topic of travel. So, what else is compatible with my insights around sustainable issues? “Am I permitted to continue flying”? What is the most effective way to combine my passion for travel and the desire to have as small an ecological footprint as possible?

Here are 3 tips for more sustainable travel

1. Instead of taking frequent short trips, consider taking one longer trip. That way, emissions are created only once instead of multiple times. Additionally, you recover in a more sustainable way by taking longer time off. It’s a win-win situation for everyone.

2. Support local suppliers wherever possible. Prefer smaller restaurants and stores over big-name chains whenever possible. It is important to note that the population of a country popular for tourism generally lives impoverished.

3. Give something back. In some cases, you can support a local social or environmental project directly through your hotel/accommodation.

But there are many other ways to reduce CO2, and even as an air traveler, you can influence the choice of fuel. There are small steps and big impact. If we all work together to rethink tourism.

Here’s to a World Tourism Day that is effective and sustainable!
