Minimalism in everyday life – Why less really is more

Minimalism in everyday life – Why less really is more

The term minimalism and the slogan “less is more” is on everyone’s lips. But while for one person minimalism in everyday life is synonymous with “extremely little”, for another it simply means having less ballast.

Space for the essentials

When you think of minimalism in everyday life, do you think of an almost empty living room with only a white sofa and a floor lamp, or a clothes rack with a greatly reduced selection of only black and white clothes? Yes? Then I can reassure you: It doesn’t have to be quite that drastic. Because minimalism is ultimately what YOU make of it. In general, the focus is on simplifying to make room for the essentials.

That doesn’t just have to mean reducing material things or organizing and structuring everyday tasks. I also rethink relationships or appointments (of my children and me) from time to time. And once you start simplifying, amazing things happen. 😉

Clarity thanks to minimalism in everyday life

My everyday life and my environment should serve me/us, not the other way around. With my growing family, the desire to make the household tasks a little more manageable and easier to handle in everyday life arose. Over the years, I have read a lot about minimalism, tried out a few things, and some things have become established.

Five tips for more minimalism in everyday life

With the following 5 tips, which you can implement immediately, you will have more time for the good things in life 😉

1. Reduce the things you own.

Take each room one by one and clean it out. You can also start with one drawer for a little success at the beginning of your minimalism journey. Make use of different categories when cleaning out, e.g. keep, sell, give away, throw away.

2. Only purchase what you really need.

Every time you make a new purchase, honestly question whether it’s necessary. Borrow things that you don’t need very often, for example from friends or neighbors. In return, you can certainly lend something or offer your help. Maybe a nice contact will develop by the way 😉

If you need to buy something, you can check Ebay or similar sites and try to buy secondhand. This is not only minimalistic, but also sustainable.

3. Every household item has a fixed place.

This place should be in a cupboard, a box/basket. This way it is easier for all inhabitants of the common household to keep things in order and there is visually more peace in the room.

4. Do short tasks immediately.

This tip from (time) management also works wonderfully in the household. If a task takes less than 2 minutes, do it immediately.

5. Sort paperwork immediately and keep it in a fixed place.

Piles of paper arise in the household faster than you can look. At least as long as there is no system. Therefore, create meaningful categories for your paperwork (e.g. to-do, file, scan) and keep them in open compartments. Dispose of advertising flyers, opened envelopes, etc. immediately. Take care of the three categories regularly so that nothing gets lost.
