This is an update from June 24, 2022

One of the easiest ways to make your life more sustainable often starts in the bathroom. There are now so many great alternatives for shampoo, shower gel, make-up and the like that you’ll hardly notice the change!

The environment, however, does notice – and so does your body! According to statistics, the average person uses 10 different cosmetic products every day. And thus, has the potential to ingest up to 130 toxins! These include silicones, parabens, microplastics and fragrances, to name just a few. None of these substances are acutely life-threatening, but in the long term, both the environment and humans can suffer. Natural cosmetics do not contain any of these problematic ingredients.

Natural cosmetics can help to improve your skin and hair, many people can have reactions or irritations to some of the ingredients in conventional cosmetic products. Fragrances in particular can cause redness, blemishes and swelling. Many of these issues can be solved by switching to natural cosmetics.

How to recognize good natural cosmetics

Almost all manufacturers now advertise with “natural” ingredients. However, on closer inspection, not everything is as green as it appears at first glance. Therefore, if you’re not sure whether a product is really as sustainable as it sounds, it’s best to trust brands that are certified with a recognized ecolabel. These will also tell you, for example, whether the ingredients have been tested on animals.

Although animal testing for cosmetics is banned in the EU, this does not apply to chemical ingredients. These are not only used in cosmetics, but also in other products such as cleaning agents or medicines. With certified natural cosmetics, consumers can usually be sure that no animals had to suffer for the product. The various certifications have cut-off dates for this: for the BDIH seal, for example, no raw materials are allowed that were tested on animals after 1 January 1998. The well-known bunny logo with the protective hand even applies to the period from 1979.

You can also use barcode scanner apps such as Toxfox and Codecheck to find out how much nature is really in your natural cosmetics. Or, you can simply use one the cosmetics lines from one of our Green Pearls® partners.

Traditional natural cosmetics

Bali has its own beauty secrets to share with the world. However, one of the most important pieces of advice from the Indonesian island is: moisture keeps you young! Both internally, by drinking plenty of water, and externally, by making use of nourishing creams. The Puri Dajuma team reveals that in Bali, this includes recipes that have been passed down through generations.

Puri Dajuma’s skincare collection is based on essential oils and 100% natural ingredients such as coconut oil, jungle honey, lemon, cucumber and banana. You can try these out directly at the Dajuma, specifically at the Lola Spa. There you can enjoy head massages, a cream face massage or a hair mask.

Holistic care according to Ayurvedic teachings

In the Mountain Ashram Spa of the CERVO Mountain Resort in Zermatt guests can enjoy a specially developed natural, vegan, animal-free cosmetics line. The products are inspired by Ayurvedic medicine and have a calming, energising or detoxifying effect. The cosmetics and oils are an ideal match for the holistic treatment approach of the Mountain Ashram Spa.

With the ‘Alpine Woman Apricot Sensation’ for women and the ‘Pioneer Man Alpine Herbs’ for men, CERVO has launched its own collection of cosmetic lines. In addition, there are other series such as the moisturizing ‘Aloe Vera ‘, or the ‘Flow and Ayurveda Massage Oils’. Other products are also currently being developed.

One of the new signature products is the “Mountain Ashram Detox Body Scrub“, made with natural ingredients from the Swiss mountains: hazelnut oil, pine needles and sage. Allow 5 minutes for application, massaging the body scrub in circular motions from the feet to the heart. This should not only refine your skin texture, but also promote blood circulation.

Regional ingredients for natural cosmetics in the hotel

In South Tyrol, you can also experience a special natural cosmetics line – that of the ADLER Resorts & Lodges. For the ‘ADLER SPA Aktiv’ line, they use the best ingredients from three different regions of Italy, where the ADLER Resorts & Lodges are located: Plants and flowers from South Tyrol for skin cell protection and regeneration, grapes and thermal water from Tuscany for prevention and nourishing the skin, and algae extracts, citrus fruits and seawater from Sicily for cleansing and detoxification.

Only raw materials from organically controlled cultivation which are free of preservatives and colorants are used for the ADLER cosmetics line. The innovative technology ensures that the raw materials are gently broken down, and the active ingredients can be optimally absorbed into the skin. You can buy the products not only on the spot, but also in the ADLER online store.

South Tyrolean BergSea cosmetic line

In South Tyrol, on the Ritten, the Hotel Weihrerhof has also developed its own cosmetic line using ingredients from the region. The BergSea cosmetics line is certified organic and packaged in recycled PET. The basis of the skin care line is the water of the Wolfsgruben Lake. Located at 1,200 meters above sea level, Lake Wolfsgruben is one of the cleanest bathing lakes in Italy. There are also other ingredients from the Ritten, such as Swiss stone pine and hay. The products can be purchased from the hotel’s online shop for as little as 19 euros.

Of course, not all of our Green PearlsⓇ partners have developed their own line of cosmetics. That’s why we also asked them what natural cosmetics they use – both for spa treatments and for you as a guest in your hotel room. Here are some of the brands our partners recommend:

TEAM DR. JOSEPH

Several of our partners rely on certified natural cosmetics from Team Dr. Joseph. The brand has been around since 1986 and is produced in Italy (South Tyrol). Team Dr. Joseph is vegan, cruelty-free and produced and packaged climate- and plastic-free. The natural cosmetics are also designed for holistic treatment. In addition to consumer products, the brand also has a partner program for hotels and spas.

Team Dr. Joseph natural cosmetics can be found at the sustainable Hotel My Arbor, also in South Tyrol (on the Plose near Brixen), and in Germany at the romantic Hotel Das Rübezahl in the Allgäu and at STURM in the foothills of the Rhön.

“Team Dr. Joseph is characterized by outstanding quality and delivers excellent results. The active ingredients include local trees, which suits us very well” – My Arbor (The hotel is built on stilts in the middle of the forest).

Phamos Nature

Hotel My Arbor also uses certified natural cosmetics Phamos Natur in the spa. The founder of the German company, Margot Esser, was involved in a car accident in the USA in the 1980s and suffered severe burns to her face and upper body. She was taken to a shamanic natural healing clinic where she was treated with Aloe Vera. The beneficial treatment and convincing effect led her to develop her own Aloe Vera products – and she has been doing so very successfully for over 35 years.

The Aloe Vera plants are grown in a sustainable mixed culture in Ecuador. Following the wisdom of the Mayan farmers, Phamos Natur ensures that “all plants want to grow together in families”.

Walde Organic Soap

At Hotel Klosterbräu in Seefeld, Austria, you will find Walde’s organic lavender liquid soap in every room. Walde is the oldest soap factory in Austria, with almost 250 years of history. Although the soap is not certified as a natural cosmetic, there is an organic line where all ingredients are organically grown.

Doctor Eckstein

The Birkenhof ***** Spa & Genussresort in the Upper Palatinate Lake District uses the indie brand Doctor Eckstein. The entire product line is based on nature and is produced in Germany. However, they are not certified natural cosmetics.

Is natural always better?

You may have guessed from our last two examples that we are cautious about this. As with food, it may be that smaller companies or start-ups cannot (yet) afford certification. For us, this simply means: read the ingredients (yes, we know how difficult it is with cosmetics!), look at the company website and if you have any doubts, ask critically. If the company is truly and honestly committed to sustainability, they will be happy to answer your questions!

What do you look for when choosing your cosmetics? And do you have any tips for sustainable beauty lines?

Have you made it through the holidays well? You might feel a little full and perhaps even annoyed that you were not able to refuse. But hey, it was a holiday season, and you are allowed to do that. But possibly, you want to do something good for yourself at the beginning of the year and detoxify your body. Or you  wish to change your nutrition and are looking for a starting point. Or you just want to give sustainable fasting a try.

Regardless of the reason, we will take you by the hand and show you what fasting and sustainability have to do with each other. At the end, you’ll also find our hotel recommendations if you’d like to spend your fasting holiday staying in a sustainable hotel with all the amenities.

What makes people fast?

Fasting involves abstaining from food completely or partially, depending on the type of fast. For example, in Buchinger’s method, which is probably the best known, only tea, juices, vegetable broth and a little protein are allowed. Sounds terrible at first, doesn’t it? So, why do we do this to ourselves?

Because it has been proven to have a positive effect on the body. An increasing number of studies are coming to the conclusion that various processes in the body are triggered by voluntarily abstaining from food. For example, cell cleansing is triggered, and the body is thus detoxified. It can lower high blood pressure and inhibits inflammation.

BUT: Fasting does not help you lose weight! During a longer cure, you are certain to lose one or two kilos, but due to the yo-yo effect, they will quickly return. So fasting cures are not a weight loss program.

Alkaline Fasting

A special kind of fasting, which is gentler than the curative fasting described above, is known as alkaline fasting. Here, it is misleading to say that it is not on basic, but acid-forming food. These include, for example, sugar, certain types of grain, meat, and alcohol.

An Alkaline fasting diet may lay the foundation for more conscious eating. We think more carefully about what we eat and deal with our food. Simultaneously, the body is detoxified, and the mind should also come to rest during the alkaline fasting. Heavy and “acidifying” thoughts are discarded. Massages, baths, meditations, and walks in the woods are part of the fixed program of alkaline fasting cures, for example at the Naturresort Gerbehof, which we will introduce to you in more detail below.

The picture shows an alkaline dish from the alkaline fasting cure of the nature resort Gerbehof. the salad is decorated with flowers and sprouts.

Intermittent fasting

Intermittent fasting is a method that is suitable for everyday use, but no less effective. You can either incorporate this into your daily routine as 16:8 fasting (16 hours fasting, 8 hours eating) or as a weekly plan with one or two fasting days. Alternate Day Fasting, alternating fasting and eating, is another option that has even prevented type 2 diabetes in mice. Intermittent fasting teaches the body to live off its reserves for a short time without shutting down metabolic processes. Just give it a try!

By the way: You don’t have to follow fixed plans. You can also just take a fasting day occasionally. This also does something good for your body.

Fasting for more sustainability

Now that you know what fasting is, why can it be valuable for you, and what options you have, one question remains: What does all this have to do with sustainability?

We already touched on it above: When you fast, whether it’s complete abstinence or abstinence from selected foods, you inevitably become involved with your nutrition. And that leads to you purchasing food in greater consciousness. Maybe you’ll buy less, perhaps you’ll buy organic products more often, or perhaps you’ll cut out meat more often. You probably also throw away less, since you only buy what you actually eat.

These are all small actions that make your lifestyle and eating habits more sustainable. But sustainability has not only something to do with climate and environment, but also with yourself. Because if you start with a fast, especially with alkaline fasting, then from there you can more easily establish your new eating habits and reduce or even eliminate relapses. And that, in turn, is sustainable for you.

Tips for sustainable fasting

  • Have yourself examined and advised by a doctor beforehand. Particularly if you have pre-existing conditions such as type 1 diabetes or gout. You should also not fast whether you are pregnant, underweight or have an eating disorder.
  • Have one or two relief days before you start fasting. On these days, eat lighter foods and prepare your body for the stressful situation of fasting.
  • Drink a lot during your fasting period. However, avoid carbonated drinks such as sodas as much as possible.
  • It’s best to remove anything that might tempt you to break your fast from your kitchen before you begin your fast.
  • Distraction is key. This can take place through exercise, relaxation exercises and the like.
  • After fasting, slowly start eating again. As you did in the beginning, it’s best to plan one or two days of rest.
  • Seek like-minded people who will go through the whole thing with you. Make sure however that your fasting companions are not complaining.  . That pulls you down with and tempts to break off.
  • You can also do a chamfering cure wonderfully in a health hotel. There you are accompanied expertly and above all you do not have to worry about anything. You will also find like-minded people there, and the distance from everyday life provides relaxation and space for reflection and change.

Fasting for the liver at the Klosterhof – Alpine Hideaway & Spa

At the Bavarian Hotel Klosterhof, health is the focus. The hotel has its health center, the Artemacur Health Center. Hotelier Andreas Färber is a doctor himself and is available to answer guests’ questions and give lectures.

A special fasting recommendation is liver fasting, according to Dr. Worm. This aims to break down a non-alcoholic fatty liver and thus avoid the symptoms of this hidden ailment, which only appear late in life. During a liver fasting cure, you will receive all-round care from the very first examination and determination of the actual condition to the end of your cure and, of course, you will be pampered with delicious, light meals. Fasting cure and wellness vacation in one.

Vacation agreeing nature. Does that sound tempting to you?

The Wagner host family stands behind the Naturresort Gerbehof. It provides guests at all levels an authentic, familiar and natural experience, as it is not only professional in the hotel business. Trainings at the Research and Teaching Academy for Bioenergetics and Bioinformatics, the work as a stress relief motivator and cosmetician, contribute to an all-round qualified support of the holidaymakers. Hand in hand, the Wagners are working to provide you with a natural, relaxing vacation with a personal touch.

Local and regional

A common thread running through the Biohotel on Lake Constance is the closeness and affection for the region. For the partly hand-crafted cozy furnishings, wood from local forests was predominantly used, and in the spa area you can find rocks from the mouth of the Rhine. A wonderful view into the green can already be enjoyed at breakfast. The nature spa area is located here, surrounded by a garden, which invites you to stay and recharge your batteries.

Certified organic

Here, organic is not only on the label, but also 100% inside. In 2015, the family business made another consequent step towards sustainability by joining the Bio Hotels association. Members commit to using regional suppliers, resorting to eco-friendly alternatives when it comes to waste and energy, and acting in an economically sustainable manner. This obligation applies not only to food, but also to cosmetics, alternative electricity suppliers, the use of paper, and so on. Further, 2-3 annual controls and the optimization of the CO2 balance are on the jointly prepared future agenda of the association. As of 2021, the Naturresort Gerbehof is not only climate-neutral, but also climate-positive certified by fokus Zukunft. This is particularly noticeable in waste separation and heating energy. Compostable waste is added to horse manure, reusable containers and deposit systems are used, collected wood residues are turned into heat by the wood chip plant.

Exploring Lake Constance sustainably

The nature resort is also an ideal starting point for your explorations in the region around Lake Constance. You have a variety of excursion destinations from here, which often offer an impressive view of Lake Constance or the Alps. For those of you who enjoy active pursuits, the choice is yours—hiking, sailing, fishing, to name a few. Returning to the Biohotel in the evening from a trip full of impressions is like coming home due to the family atmosphere.

Bring your horse

The Wagner family’s personal passion for horseback riding gave rise many years ago to the idea of the horse farm, which is also located on the grounds of the nature resort. From Monday to Saturday, big and small guests from about 3 years old can go pony riding in the evenings, and the horse farm offers various opportunities for riding lessons from 8 years old. Big guests may even bring   their horse right along. Surrounding meadows and forests invite to extended riding excursions with picnic in the green for horse and rider. A small breeding of Quarter and Paint horses is also located under the roof of the horse farm.

Farm to Table—fruit and vegetables from own cultivation

A further highlight of the Hotel Gerbehof is the culinary variety. Everything from fasting cures to vegan menus to home-hunted game is on offer. Not only does it sound good, it is! The Wagners know their suppliers personally. Following the motto from farm to table, fruit, and vegetables from their cultivation or regional suppliers find their way into the kitchen. This is where the guests’ plates are filled up with delicious food that is prepared with attention to detail and quality. In the context of a fasting cure with myDetox the team of the bio hotel offers before and after actual fasting stay a digital support by App, so that the respective transitions can be arranged as far as possible without usual accompanying symptoms.

The holistic, sustainable approach of the Biohotel also provides its guests with the opportunity to recharge their batteries in the wonderful in-house Naturspa area. Sauna, hanging loungers, Kneipp walk and rock shower invite you to leave everyday life behind. Different applications make relaxation possible and who would like to enjoy Wellness rather privately, finds in addition in the private Spa with regional nature stone jacuzzi and hay couch an ideal possibility. Gladly, family Wagner deals also with individual conceptions of guests and converts these with pleasure.

It is not unusual for Gerbehof guests to say “See you next time!” when they leave.

You are very welcome to tell us about your experiences when you visit the hotel

All the green pearls are united by their exceptional stories, which we are happy to share with you. Today it takes us to the wellnesshotel Klosterhof – Alpine Hideaway & Spa in Berchtesgadener Land.

The history of the Klosterhof

The story starts at the early 16th century. The old part of today’s hotel was used by Augustinian monks as a cloister economy. If you wonder now what is behind the term cloister economy, you feel like us.

What is a monastery economy?

Monasteries were not only religious centers throughout the ages, but were also economic enterprises, and not a few of them also had their own commercial offices in the cities. Their gardens and fields, as well as their livestock, supplied themselves and, in some cases, the surrounding countryside. Also, products were manufactured. Probably one of the best known is beer from the monastery breweries.

But medical products also originate from the monastery economy. The Augustinian monks of the early Klosterhof had wide knowledge of healing remedies. These were cultivated in their gardens and processed on site into ointments, teas and other medicines.

Thus, the past bridges the gap to the present. Host Andreas Färber, as a doctor, is proud of the history of the hotel and the knowledge of the monks because even today the well-being of the guests is the main focus.

Not sure whether a health or wellness hotel is right for you? Maybe this article will help you. By the way, the Klosterhof offers both 😉

From monastery to boarding school to inn

The monks managed the monastery until the beginning of the 19th century. In 1860, the Klosterhof received a liquor license, making it one of the oldest gastronomic establishments in the Berchtesgaden district.

In 1950, the building was converted into a boarding school and in 1987 the Lederer family bought the Klosterhof and converted it into a high-quality 3-star hotel with 14 rooms and an inn. The Lederers’ two daughters took over the business in 2002 and sold it to the Färber family in 2011, who continued to run it for another two years without any changes.

In 2014, the hotel was closed and completely renovated. In the process, the old building to the south was preserved and extensively renovated. A new building integrates harmoniously with the old stock and the nature.

This was the cornerstone for today’s Klosterhof. On July 1, 2016, it was opened as a 4-star superior wellness hotel with 65 rooms and suites.

If you feel like it, the hosts Henrike and Dr. Andreas Färber will be happy to tell you more about the wonderful history and give you tips on the historical paths on which you can explore the surroundings of the hotel.

By the way, the hotel’s logo, the Trikele, also reflects the philosophy. The sun sign of the Celts represents connectivity, progress, and growth.

“Finding inspiration, enjoying health and feeling individuality” is how the Färber couple describes their concept.”

The hard facts

After so much history, there are now some “facts” about the hotel.

On a sun plateau in a secluded location in the Berchtesgadener Land, you can find the remarkable wellness hotel. With all 65 rooms, you have the agony of choice: forest or Mountain View. The rooms and suites are lovingly and individually furnished. The large Artemacur Spa with the health center form the perfect location for an unforgettable wellness vacation in Bavaria.

Vacation without remorse

The hotel was renovated according to strict ecological principles and created a union of tradition and modernity. The Klosterhof recently became the first hotel in Germany to be awarded the EU-wide recognized “EU Ecolabel” certification for its sustainability concept.

“It is the link with nature that keeps us grounded and gives us vision,” Henrike and Andreas Färber explain their motivation. Their day-to-day actions pursue the goal of making sustainability a central element in their thinking throughout the Klosterhof, to constantly improve the quality of life for their guests, their partners, their team and themselves, and to protect the environment.

During a vacation at Klosterhof Alpine Hideaway & Spa you will definitely feel this commitment!

But the fifth season doesn’t appeal to everybody. Some of our Green Pearls® hotels offer a perfect escape from Shrovetide – for a relaxed vacation, while the others celebrate.

Swiss chic

The impressive mountain scenery of Arosa can easily make up with carnival. Every athlete and nature lover will find the right venture. During the winter months, Arosa is perfect for any kind of winter sports, but you can also choose to enjoy the breathtaking view of the snow-covered mountains from more than 300 km hiking trails including panoramic routes on levels up to 2,900 meters. And when you are snowshoeing, you can recover at 20 mountain huts with local refreshments. And best: when you return, you are invited to get pampered with a delicious meal at the restaurant Twist at Valsana Hotel & Apartments.

Vacation to clean your cells

A relaxed alternative to the overcrowded streets on Shrove Monday is a Detox vacation. A fasting cure is ideal to get fit for spring. The Selfnesshotel SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA offers a classical fasting ingestion after Dr. Buchinger or a base fasting, a cure consisting only of regional fruit merely seasonal one and vegetables focusing on an alkaline diet to neutralize the body. Yoga lessons, meditation music as well as hikes to reach a maximum physical balance accompany both cures.

Wild forest instead of wild crowds

Who decides for a fasting diet at the SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA and wants to explore the unspoiled Black Forest while hiking, should take part in the guided hike tour “Wildes Albtal”. You follow the Alb trails for about three hours, sometimes also leaving the trails for some adventure. Off the way you learn about the history and origin of the Albtal and meet the multi-facetted scenery of the Black Forest. For more information click here.

The Italian Dolomites are for sure well known to every mountain lover. Who has not seen the impressive pictures of the Drei Zinnen or the gorgeous view from the Seiser Alm to the Langkofel-Gruppe? In addition clear mountain lakes reflecting mountains and pines wait to be discovered. South Tirol stands for nature, culture and pleasure, offers a perfect mixture of tradition and modern age, adventure and rest. Whether it is relaxed walks, challenging hiking tours, climbing or Mountain biking – it is nor exaggeration that we talk about a paradise for natural lovers, active vacationers and outdoors sports lovers.

A must for natural lovers

In the Leitlhof located in the Pustertal you find perfect conditions and starting point for an „active relaxation vacation“, and tours in the surrounding mountains. The nearby nature reserve Fanes Alpine Senn Prags offers a variety of wonderful, turquoise-blue mountain lakes; probably best known is the Pragser wild lake. Particularly splendid  (and important; not as cold as the others) is the Dürrensee, Europe’s highest lake. From here the Drei Zinnen view is only a short walk.

Wellness with hay and herbs

Coming back exhausted from hiking in the mountains the wellness area of the Leitlhof waits to charge your batteries for the next day: Whether in the sauna or in the sole bath, with massages or relaxation baths – a wide range of wellness offers await you.  The absolute highlight is the application with fresh mountain pasture hay: the original South Tyrolean hay bath or the hay Kraxen steam bath. The mountain pasture hay contains a variety of remedial herbs and wild herbs, ethereal oils and trace elements. A bath helps for tension, tiredness, stress and rheumatic pain, increases the vitality as well as the well-being. Totally relaxed the homemade delicacies from the Leitlhof kitchen taste even better.

Enjoy with a lasting effect close to nature

It is easy to feel at home in the Leitlhof and to relax and feast with a good conscience. The hotel is climate-neutral and, besides, is energy-self-sufficient due to the combination of an own cogeneration unit and solar energy. The natural materials, as for example the natural mucky plaster on the walls and the pieces of furniture made of local wood provide for quite a special, warm and healthy atmosphere. In the restaurant predominantly regional and biological products are used  – some of the ingredients are sourced from their own farm Mühlenhof  (e.g., the biology-lamb meat) or from the own garden (e.g., herbs and vegetables). And also as a guest you can contribute, while you leave the car in the garage and use the shuttle service of the hotel as well as the Mobilecard South Tyrol.
