Coral Lines Project – Planting corals at Gili Lankanfushi

At Gili Lankanfushi in the Maldives, marine biologists have initiated a project to help regenerate coral reefs. The resort is a pioneer in sustainability in the Maldives. In this project, 50 coral fragments are tied to a rope and then left to grow on the seabed for at least a year. The next step is to transplant the corals grown to the house reef. If you feel like it, you are invited to join the marine biologists in connecting the corals to the rope. Each rope has an ID number and you can follow the growth of “your” coral lines every three months on the project blog.

Rescue dogs and cats at Tongsai Bay 

The Tongsai Bay has been sustainably oriented since its beginning. Environmental protection and social action determine the philosophy of the owners. The resort supports the regional animal shelter with equipment and food and has also donated a minibus that is often in use. If you feel like adopting a dog or cat, you can choose one to become a sponsor. The sponsorship costs 20 euros per month. There are also German accounts to which donations can be transferred, as well as a receipt for the donation.

Kasbah du Toubkal and education for all 

In many Moroccan rural regions, girls are denied schooling. This is also due to the lack of infrastructure. Schools are too far away and accommodation near the school is financially unaffordable for families. In order to help here, our partner hotel in Morocco, the Kasbah du Toubkal, has co-founded the initiative “Education for all” to enable precisely these girls to receive a school education. They receive free accommodation in the school’s own hostels near the school and can participate in education and thereby sustainably improve their standard of living in rural areas. 

According to the motto “Educate a boy and you educate the man; educate a girl and you educate a family, a community, a nation”, “Education for All” is committed to the school education of disadvantaged girls.

The project is financed and made possible by the guests of the Kasbah du Toubkal, donations, and volunteers. They help the girls with their schoolwork and also teach French. Maybe you would like to apply as a volunteer. You can do so at info@efamorocco.org.

Happy chickens at Berghotel Rehlegg

Would you like to visit happy chickens? You can do that at the partner farm of Berghotel Rehlegg. Here at Haus Hohenfried in Bayerisch Gmain they live – the Augsburg chickens. As the name suggests, it is a Bavarian chicken breed that is under threat of extinction. In 2009, there were only a few left in Germany. In 2018, Berghotel Rehlegg bought 15 chickens and one rooster from a breeder near Augsburg. Since then, the female and male animals have been living in a barn with plenty of outdoor space and green areas for pecking.

And unlike mass-produced chickens, which live only 30 days, or organic chickens, which live 80 days, Augsburg’s chickens are weatherproof and resilient and live at least 11 months. It is a so-called “Zwiehuhn” or dual-purpose chicken because it is an excellent source of eggs and meat. The animals of the hotel live appropriate to their species, their meat and eggs have Demeter quality and are of the best taste. Try it yourself!

FAVORITE PLACES WITH A BEAUTIFUL VIEW

An important characteristic for the ideal favorite place is for example a beautiful view. We have several ideas for you. In the Creativhotel Luise, there is a beautiful roof terrace and a viewing platform on which even an alpine pine grows. From here you have a wonderful view over Erlangen. The organic family hotel Gut Nisdorf on the Baltic Sea coast, not far from the island of Rügen, is a paradise for families with children. But not only children will have an unforgettable time here. Here you can finally let yourself go as an adult and be a child again: scooter- or wart-carting! Why not? Nobody will look at you strangely here if you just have fun and take yourself back to a carefree childhood. For many adults who spend their vacations there, this is an absolute favorite place.

FAVOURITE PLACES TO RELAX

For those who want to relax the most, we have some wonderful tips. In the family hotel Gut Nisdorf there is nothing like a little nap in the hammock. Or would you rather read a book with a view into the treetops? You can also relax really well in the hotel garden of the Locanda Mistral, in the Maira Valley of Piedmont. The 900 m2 garden is covered with plants, bushes, and green areas. It’s up to you to relax in one of the deck chairs or stroll through the garden. The access to the Maira stream is another plus. A perfect place for a regenerating Kneipp cure after a hike in the mountains. Doing nothing and relaxing can also be done well in the wonderful spa of the SCHWARZWALD PANORAMAS. Nature is the ideal place to relax, clear your head, and recharge your batteries. A day in the forest can bring miracles. In the meantime, there is even scientific evidence that so-called forest bathing has a relaxing effect on the body and mind. Gili Lankanfushi could be a favorite place in itself, because of its fantastic location on an island of the Maldives. Among the favorite places here are the famous “One Palm Island” and the hotel garden, which was laid out according to the principles of organic farming. Here you can taste raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries directly from the bed or bush – because nibbling is welcome here!

Power places are usually places in nature that have a particularly healing energy. They have a power that helps you to come back to your own center. Just as nature produces certain healing plants, energy places can also develop very specific powers with correspondingly different effects. There are even several such power places near the SCHWARZWALD PANORAMAS: the Falcon Rock, the Amber Rock, the Devil’s Mill or the former Celtic cult site in the Dobeltal.

The hotel HUBERTUS has even specialized in power places. For the hotel in the Allgäu, particularly a Geomant from the region was engaged, in order to establish different power places in the hotel. Martin Boss has created three very special power places in the hotel, each with a different effect. The roof terrace with a stone circle in Celtic style provides a feeling of peace and security – a kind of place of well-being for the soul. The Zen garden with a swastika symbol, the oldest spiritual symbol of mankind, triggers a calm, peaceful feeling. In the waiting area of the spa, there is a Mandorla installation – a kind of geometric bar code based on ancient Egyptian patterns. A restful sleep

On vacation, the night’s rest should be especially relaxing. By the way, the expression “beauty sleep” is a fact and not just a legend, because the tissue is renewed during sleep, which rewards us with a fresh appearance. Sleeping outdoors also has a very special fascination, because you feel a strong connection with nature. Even if you can’t sleep outside in some of the following hotels, they have thought of special moments for you.

Special overnight accommodations

In the Lifestylehotel SAND at Timmendorfer Strand, you will stay overnight in a very special beach chair. The two of you can experience a unique night directly on the beach. Let the first sunbeams kiss you awake and go for a swim in the Baltic Sea.

The Gili Lankanfushi in the Maldives also offers dinner by moonlight, the location is up to you. The wine cellar offers exclusive wine evenings with a delicious dinner. Today we are taking you with us to Marocco: accurately at the foot of the Jbel Toubkal – the highest mountain of North Africa. Here the beautiful and sustainable Kasbah du Toubkal is located about an hour and a half from Marrakech and yet in the middle of the untouched nature of the national park in the small Berber village Imlil.

Unique to this vacation destination is the hotel located in the heart of the land of the Maroccan Berbers on 1.820 meters height with its majestic view. Get to know the beautiful landscape of the Toubkal National Park by hiking, trekking or renting a bike. 

In 1995  Mike McHugo and his brother Chris with their organization Discover Ltd. Kasbah du Toubkal welcomed guests for the first time. Since then many happy guests had the chance to learn more about the Berber culture and the nature of the Atlas Mountains.

WHAT SUSTAINABILITY MEANS FOR ME…

For me, sustainability means allow sustainable appropriate development whilst protecting the environment.

I AM PARTICULARLY PROUD OF THIS GREEN PROJECT AT KASBAH DU TOUBKAL:

The project I am most proud of was the founding of “Education For All” providing the opportunity of secondary education for girls from the rural Atlas Mountains. “Education For All” was recognised for its work by an official by TRH The Duke and Duchess of Sussex in 2019.

THIS IS WHAT MAKES KASBAH DU TOUBKAL SO SPECIAL:

The Kasbah du Toubkal is completely run by the local Berber population and embedded in and for the appropriate development of the fragile mountain environment.

Our plan for the future is to carry on and do our best to protect and also provide appropriate development for the local region.

Adventure 1: River trip through the Peruvian rainforest

The Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica can be found in the southern Peruvian rainforest near the Bolivian and Brazilian borders. It is the green gateway to one of the world’s most extraordinary tropical environments – no wonder that arriving here is very special! You fly to Puerto Maldonado Airport first and then head for Madre de Dios River –the hotel can only be reached via the river.

The ride on the river takes about 45 minutes and you can listen to the exotic sounds of the rainforest. We have to admit: We had to get used to the swinging of the boat, but the beautiful nature helped to distract us. A small welcome committee is waiting for you on the jetty of the Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica and while you get to know your guide in the Eco-Center and get an overview of all the exciting excursions that await you, your luggage will be brought to your lodge. That’s a great way to start your vacation, isn’t it?

Adventure 2: the Maldives from above

Reethi Faru Resort is a luxury escape on the secluded, pristine and private island of Filaidhoo on the Maldives. But this beautiful place needs to be achieved first! All guests fly to Male International Airport, a specially built island, close to the capital Malé. Then you can decide: Either you take the turboprop aircraft for a 20-minute flight and the speedboat, which takes another 20 minutes, or you travel with the 15-passenger seaplane (approx. 45 minutes) to Reethi Faru Resort. In both cases you enjoy wonderful views over the sparkling sea and the many small islands of the Maldives – what do you prefer?

Adventure 3: With the speedboat across the Andaman Sea

The Thai Zeavola Resort is located on Phi Phi Island, which is surrounded by unique beaches and emerald green sea. And not only will the time in the green resort remain forever, the arrival and departure will also leave a lasting impression. In Phuket, you have to go to the Royal Phuket Marina Pier, but instead of taking the public ferry from there, opt for the speedboat transfer – with both options you’ll have a great view of the surrounding island and the crystal blue sea, but with the speedboat, the ride is even more exciting! Just keep in mind that the speedboat needs good weather conditions because it reacts more to the sea than a ferry.

Adventure 4: Mules instead of cars in the Atlas Mountains

At the foot of Jbel Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa, the Kasbah du Toubkal lies in the middle of the Moroccan Atlas Mountains. The Kasbah du Toubkal is a particularly authentic accommodation operated by Berbers – and you get to know their traditional way of life from the very beginning. You have to leave your car in the quiet mountain village of Imlil and from there you continue on foot. Accompanied by Berbers and mules who carry your luggage, you walk 15 minutes to the Kasbah. At 1,820 meters awaits you a hideaway of tranquility with a panoramic view of the mountains.

Adventure 5: By boat to the Cardamom Mountains

In the southwest of Cambodia, the 4 Rivers Floating Lodge is waiting for you. The Cardamom Mountains are considered the most pristine wilderness area in Southeast Asia and even if the journey takes a little longer – it’s worth it! The floating luxury tents are located on the Tatai River and you can reach the lodge only through this river. You can take a car from the airport, but you will definitely need a boat for the last stretch. The 4 Rivers offers free boat transfer every day from its own jetty. If you are uncertain how to get to the lodge, it is best to contact the eco-hotel in advance – the staff will even pick you up anywhere in Cambodia and take you to the Cardamom Mountains.

Discover Franconian Switzerland

The Creativhotel Luise is located in Erlangen in Franconia, ideal as a starting point for a trip to Franconian Switzerland. Beer lovers will especially love the “5 Seidla-Steig”: The region is not only known for mountains and hills, as well as a lot of castles but also – of course – for their beer! On the 18 km hike, you come across five private breweries, where you can enjoy a cold beer and Franconian delicacies. The ‘beer adventure trail’ also provides lots of exciting information about the origin and production of beer. The tour takes (without beer breaks ;)) about five hours. If you plan to stop at one of the breweries, you should think about reserving a table in advance.

Multi-day tour in the Atlas Mountains

The Kasbah du Toubkal lies right in the middle of the Moroccan Atlas Mountains – perfect for outdoor fans and trekking enthusiasts. If you stay here, you should join one of the guided hikes, which are offered by the lodge in different levels of difficulty. The moderate hike takes you to the Azzaden Trekking Lodge in about six hours, where you will spend the night and hike back to the Kasbah du Toubkal the next day. You climb quite a few meters on the stony paths and enjoy a special, typical Moroccan lunch made of mint tea, salad, and tasty tagine at lunch break. But the real highlight is the view! Additionally, you not only enjoy the breathtaking view from up here, but also the silence of the mountains.

If you’re no fan of multi-day tours, you can also take a day trip, but let me tell you: the effort is worth it!

Mountain lakes and lots of stunning views in the Valle Maira

The Maira Valley has left a lasting impression on me and I can’t stop enthusing about it. 🙂 Whether summer or winter, for me, nature unfolds its special relaxing effect immediately after arrival. In summer, the hike on top of Monte Scaletta is an absolute highlight: from above you can enjoy a 360 ° panoramic view over the Maritime Alps of Italy and France, including some beautiful mountain lakes. The mountain itself is about 2840 m high, so prepare to climb some meters up. On this hike, it’s important to be sure-footed, because there are some short via Ferrata sections and you also cross some scree fields.

If you love mountain lakes, the ‘Piergiogio Frassati Trail’ is perfect for you, which is also a little less strenuous. You only have to conquer some 13 kilometers and less than 900 meters of altitude on the circular route and you will be rewarded with breathtaking colors and views. From deep blue to crystal clear lakes, surrounded by trees or barren rocks – the landscape is simply beautiful!

The Maira Valley not only offers an impressive landscape and extraordinary flora and fauna but also two very special accommodations: the self-sufficient apartments in the eco-village Sagna Rotonda and the eco-boutique hotel Locanda Mistral are ideally suited for outdoor and trekking fans and the employees will help you with many tips. Currently very popular: Greta Thunberg. The 16-year-old wants to go on strike until the whole world realizes that we must now start protecting the climate. She regularly speaks to political actors and has been able to trigger a real movement among young people!

Promoting female potential

We shouldn’t follow well-worn paths for the future of a healthy planet. According to Vandana Shiva, the potential lies in diversity, as can be found in nature. If you haven’t heard of her before, it’ about time 😉 She was awarded one of the most influential women in the world by Forbes and founded her own NGO called Navdanya supporting organic farming, fair trade and promoting the cultivation of native plants in agriculture. She repeatedly underlines women’s outstanding role in sustainable development. For example, in her book ‘Staying Alive: Women, Ecology, and Development’ she highlights the importance of women in agriculture for sustainable food supply.

In Morocco, the sustainable hotel Kasbah du Toubkal also promotes female potential, albeit using a completely different approach. Education for All (EFA) enables young women to access secondary education and, thus, to develop their full potential. Recently, Fatima the first “EFA girl” has received a Bachelor’s degree. We are curious to see how many more will follow her!

Stay green

We love to travel! Nevertheless, tourism can cause negative consequences. Environmental protection in style

The fashion industry enormously impacts the environment, as you can check again here. Big names like Safia Minney, the founder of the sustainable fashion brand People Tree, are committed not only to fair working conditions but also to organic cultivation of resources (e.g. organic cotton) and environmentally friendly dyeing of textiles. Such processes are good for the environment, the health of the textile workers and finally for us wearing clothes that haven’t been treated with chemicals!

Especially in the rural areas of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, many girls don’t have access to secondary schools. There are different underlying reasons, but often the distance to school is just too far and the costs for a boarding house too expensive for the family. This is where „Education For All“ jumps in: the project offers free boarding houses for girls and with this the possibility for education and sustainable improvement of the living standards in rural areas.

„Education For All“ is financed by the guests of Kasbah du Toubkal as well as by donations. Only recently a new possibility to actively engage in the project has been launched: as a volunteer you can get involved for at least three months and help the girls with school work and additional french courses.
