“The topic of sustainability is everywhere,” writes YACHT, Europe’s largest sailing magazine, in its December 2023 issue. Nowadays, there is hardly a press conference where shipyards, suppliers, or regatta syndicates do not report on their environmental commitments. Above all, however, reader feedback has shown that environmental awareness in the sailing community is increasing. However, interest alone is not enough to make sailing and sailing vacations more environmentally friendly. Read on to learn what concrete steps can be taken.

Setting sail towards greater sustainability

Sailboats are considered to be significantly more sustainable than many other types of recreational boats, especially if they are powered primarily by wind and the outboard motor is rarely used. Wind power allows sailing to consume little to no fossil fuel, which significantly reduces CO₂ emissions.

Sustainable sailing powered by wind and sun

However, modern sailing boats have an additional engine, as well as a number of energy-consuming devices on board. Solar boats* can be an environmentally friendly alternative. You can find these boats on the global yacht charter platform, BoatAround. The link provided only shows boats powered by solar energy.

What are the advantages of a solar-powered boat?

Solar energy is an excellent option for sailboats because it doesn’t consume any fuel and doesn’t produce harmful emissions. Solar energy is a renewable resource, making it a sustainable way to power boats. Rising fuel prices and concerns about climate change are leading to an increase in the number of solar-powered boats. More and more sailors are considering this option and relying on solar power instead of traditional engines.

The advantages of solar-powered sailboats are clear:

  • Reduced Emissions: Solar energy is clean and renewable. It does not produce greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.
  • Lower costs: Solar energy can also help reduce costs. Reducing fuel consumption lowers operating costs without sacrificing range.
  • Improved air quality: Solar boats can improve air quality by reducing the emission of harmful pollutants produced by engines.
  • Less need to dock: A major advantage of a solar boat is that it can produce electricity at sea (provided there is enough sunlight). This means you don’t have to dock as often, which gives you more flexibility and independence as a sailor.
  • Stored energy: Many solar boats have photovoltaic panels and a storage system. This allows you to continue sailing with solar energy even when the sun isn’t shining. Fuel is then only needed in emergencies.

How to make your sailing vacation more sustainable

Although sailing is considered environmentally friendly, it still impacts sensitive marine ecosystems. For example, anchors can tear up seagrass beds, diesel engines release emissions into the air, and trash accumulates during a trip — often ending up in the ocean. However, making a few conscious decisions can make a big difference. Here are some ideas on how to make your sailing vacation more sustainable:

#1 Rent. Don’t buy.

Although owning your own boat sounds like freedom, it’s rarely sustainable. The construction, maintenance, and storage all cause high emissions, and it’s not worth it if the boat is only used a few times a year.

On the other hand, a charter boat is used for an average of 30 weeks per year — ten times more than a privately owned boat, which is only used for about three weeks. This means the environmental impact is spread over significantly more sailing days. Therefore, renting instead of buying saves money and CO₂.

#2 Look for solar technology when choosing a boat

As previously mentioned, the most sustainable option is a sailboat equipped with electric propulsion and solar technology.

#3 Use buoys instead of anchors

A buoy in the sea provides a sustainable alternative to anchors

Anchoring can cause significant damage, especially in seagrass beds. These beds play a central role as CO₂ reservoirs and nurseries for many marine creatures. To protect these sensitive ecosystems, buoy fields are being established around the Italian islands, in Croatia, in the Baltic Sea, and off the coast of Mallorca, among other places.

Studies in the Stockholm archipelago show that bays with buoy fields have six to seven times more sensitive species than those without anchor bans. Therefore, by mooring here, you are actively protecting the marine life below the surface.

#4 Avoid plastic

Whether you’re shopping before your trip or picnicking on shore, actively avoiding plastic protects the ocean. Bring reusable containers, water bottles, and cloth bags with you and avoid single-use packaging, plastic bags, and disposable cups. Make a difference by picking up trash that you see on the beach or in the water and disposing of it safely on shore.

#5 Environmentally friendly travel

Traveling to and from your destination often accounts for the largest portion of your vacation’s carbon footprint. If possible, travel by train or carpool with public transportation. If flying is unavoidable, pack light to save CO₂ and consider offsetting your carbon emissions. Also consider taking one two-week sailing trip instead of two separate one-week trips.

#6 Sustainable accommodation – even on land

Cerf island Resort
Cerf Island is located in the middle of a protected marine park and is the site of an eco-resort ©Cerf Island Resort

Not every trip lasts for weeks, nor does every night have to be spent on board. If you combine your sailing vacation with a stay on land, you can choose sustainable accommodations here.

These six Green Pearls® hotels are located right on the waterfront and are dedicated to responsible environmental and resource management.

  • ADLER Spa Resort SICILIA – located on one of Sicily’s most beautiful coastlines, right next to a nature reserve. This luxurious, eco-friendly resort provides guests with organic cuisine and produce from its own gardens.
  • Hotel Korinjak on the island of Iz in Croatia is a vegetarian, car-free, nature-loving retreat. By the way, dolphins can be seen off the coast!
  • OCEANO Health Spa Hotel, Tenerife – Sustainable hotel with a holistic health concept and a wide range of yoga and fitness activities.
  • Gili Lankanfushi, Maldives – focuses on recycling, local materials, and a no-plastic policy.
  • Cerf Island Resort, Seychelles – puts energy efficiency and protecting coral reefs first. It is located on the edge of the Sainte-Anne Marine National Park.
  • Lifestylehotel SAND, Baltic Sea – stylish, adults-only hotel with a relaxed atmosphere and sustainable design.

#7 Avoid sensitive areas

Water sports are not allowed in all places, and there is a valid reason for this. Breeding and refuge areas for animals, protected reefs, and shallow water zones should be avoided. The 8 rules for water sports enthusiasts in nature, which you can find here, provide some guidance in that matter.

#8 Don’t throw anything overboard, not even organic waste

Zero-waste travel at sea: The group enjoys fresh fruit on deck. Sustainable travel by boat.

Apple cores, banana peels, and other organic waste do not belong in the ocean. It may attract animals, pollute the water, and sometimes drift on the surface for days or weeks.

#9 Proper use and disposal of the waste tank

Throughout Europe, disposing of so-called “black water” in the sea is prohibited. Unfortunately, not everyone complies with this rule, as evidenced by reports of sewage problems off the coast of Croatia. Make sure to empty your holding tank in the harbor. This ensures proper disposal and prevents the contamination of coastal waters.

#10 Gentle cleaning on board

Only use biodegradable detergents and cleaning agents. It is best to scrub the deck and cockpit with only clear water.

#11 Less shower gel, more sea.

A couple relaxes in the water — slow travel at its finest.
Swimming in the sea – without chemicals or microplastics ©OCÉANO Health Spa Hotel Tenerife

Make sure your shampoo, soap, and sunscreen are free of microplastics. Use an app like “CodeCheck” to easily scan ingredients.

#12 Don’t throw cigarette butts in the water

If there are smokers on your boat, make it clear from the beginning that they cannot throw their cigarette butts overboard. Cigarette filters are made of plastic, so they don’t decompose and can be deadly for seabirds. So, be sure to bring an ashtray with you and dispose of the butts in a trash can on land.

Are you sailing green yet?

Of course, this list is far from complete. Anyone who has ever gone sailing surely has their own ideas about how to be more environmentally friendly. What experiences have you had? Please share them with me in the comments!

Water sports include all sports that take place in or on the water. However, not all water sports are environmentally friendly. Power boating and jet skiing are certainly not the greenest of water sports. Kite surfing is also controversial. At least in the North Sea and the Baltic. Environmentalists warn that surfers disturb important breeding grounds in the Wadden Sea and pose a major threat to the Baltic Sea’s native porpoises.

But what does environmentally friendly water sports look like? It means being aware and responsible with nature and includes sports such as sailing, pedal boating, surfing (with care), paddling, canoeing, swimming, and SUP (stand up paddling). In short, anything without a motor.

Water sports equipment – renting is better than buying new

You can order a brand new SUP including paddle, pump and carry bag online for as little as €150. This is sometimes cheaper than renting. (For example, depending on your location, it can cost up to €200 to hire a SUP for three days. If you hire the SUP by the hour, it’s usually cheaper). However, we still recommend that you hire water sports equipment when you go on holiday – at least until you know that you will be doing this hobby regularly and for a longer period of time.

1. It’s better to rent equipment: the SUP you rent for €15 an hour is not just like the cheap models you find on the internet, but (most likely) a professional board costing around €1,000. As you can imagine, these SUPs are also better balanced – which makes it really easy to get started.

2. Buying new is bad for the environment: So says the German Federal Environment Agency. By renting, you save on the resources needed for materials, production, transport and storage, thus helping to reduce environmental impact.

3. Don’t just rent equipment only: it’s often possible to hire accessories like lifejackets, drybags or wetsuits. It’s best to find out about these options before you go. Water sports equipment and clothing in particular are almost always made from synthetic fibres (key words: petroleum/microplastics/garbage that doesn’t rot).

8 rules of behavior for water sports enthusiasts in nature

Do you want to behave in an environmentally and animal-friendly way when practising water sports? Here is a summary of the guidelines from the German Sailing Association (DSV):

  1. Avoid sensitive areas: Sensitive areas are areas where you may (unintentionally) disturb many animals or their habitats. These include reed beds, sandbanks (and other resting places for birds, turtles, etc.), spawning grounds and riparian forests.
  2. Keep your distance: When passing reed beds, reed belts, seal banks, etc., keep your distance.
  3. Observe: You should observe animals from a distance and take photographs without flash.
  4. Respect the rules of nature reserves: In nature reserves and marine protected areas (such as the Saint-Anne Marine National Park at our partner Cerf Island Resort in the Seychelles), there are strict rules for the behaviour of water sports enthusiasts – you should always follow them.
  5. Special consideration for Ramsar sites: Ramsar Sites, also known as Wetlands of International Importance (WSI), are ecosystems that, according to UNESCO, are home to numerous protected animal species. The Ramsar Convention was signed by many countries in 1971 in Ramsar, Iran.
  6. Landing: It is best to use designated moorings for launching and landing sailboats or other water sports equipment. This also applies to embarking and disembarking when diving!
  7. Clean-up: Help keep the water clean. Unfortunately, many waters are now so polluted that it is best to take a bag with you to collect any litter you find in the water and dispose of it on land.
  8. Get informed: Find out about local regulations, important months for local wildlife, etc. before your water sports holiday. Being well informed will help you to behave in an environmentally friendly and responsible manner in the water.

#3 OCÉANO Health Spa Hotel – Surfing in the Atlantic Ocean

“The north of Tenerife is often referred to as the “Hawaii of the Canary Islands”. Right in front of the OCÉANO, you can watch the surfers ride the waves or take a course yourself,” say our partners at the OCÉANO Health Spa Hotel in Tenerife. There are several surf schools on the island that offer courses for beginners.

Tip: Spring and summer are ideal for beginners. In winter, the waves are high and strong, making the Atlantic off the north of Tenerife the territory of the pros.

#1 The Peak, Sölden – Rowing in the mountain lake

The Peak Sölden is a family-run holiday apartment complex in Sölden, which you probably know best as a winter paradise. However, your host, Ronald Kneisl, also recommends Sölden as a summer holiday destination, as there are plenty of opportunities for hiking and water sports. Nearby is the Piburger See in Ötz. The lake is the natural landmark of the village and is picturesquely situated 900 metres above the village in the middle of a forest. In summer the lake is perfect for swimming, rowing and fishing. Despite its relatively high altitude, Lake Piburg warms up to 24 degrees in summer. Located in a nature reserve, it also provides shelter and habitat for many endangered and protected animal species.

There is a public swimming pool, restaurant and rowing boat hire on the south-east shore. The lake is stocked with char, perch and trout. Although ice skating is not a summer water sport, it is worth mentioning. When the ice is thick enough, the lake is open for skating. There is a prepared ice rink over two kilometres long and eight metres wide, and skates can be hired on site.

#2 Naturhotel Outside – Glacier river rafting

“The Isel is one of the last untouched glacial rivers in the Eastern Alps,” says Naturhotel Outside in East Tyrol. You can expect fast currents and a fantastic mountain panorama. The Isel is about 25 minutes away from the hotel, which is located in Matrei, “in the centre of Outside”, as they say.

Tip: Click here for links to various rafting companies in East Tyrol.

#3 Hygna Chalets – tube riding

The Alpbach Valley in Tyrol is also ideal for whitewater rafting. On the Brandenberger Ache river you can experience a special adventure: tubing! Wearing a neoprene wetsuit and helmet, you’ll be inflated into a truck’s inner tube and then hurtle 1.5 to 3.5 kilometres down the river.

You can spend the night in the luxurious and sustainably managed Hygna Chalets in the Alpbachtal. The charming chalets not only offer breakfast service, but some even have their own hot tub.

#4 Summit Lodges – Kite- and Windsurfing

Do you know the insider tip among kite- and windsurfers in Tyrol? It is the Reschensee at the Reschenpass of the same name. From the Summit Lodges in Pfunds you can reach the Reschensee in about one hour by public transport. It is located in South Tyrol in the municipality of Graun. In the lake the water of the Etsch, the Rojenbach and the Karlinbach is dammed. The kite surfers among you will find optimal conditions here. In fact, the artificial reservoir is a hotspot for kiters. It combines optimal wind and water conditions. For those who want to try out kiting, there are schools all around the lake where you can learn the sport under professional guidance. And when you return to your Summit Lodge log cabin in the evening, tired and with heavy bones, your very own private sauna will be waiting for you.

Sustainable Water Sports in Germany

We have also received some tips from our partners in Germany on where you can enjoy sustainable water sports and find green and individual accommodation.

#1 Naturresort Gerbehof – gentle water sports on Lake Constance

Situated between Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the 63-kilometre-long Lake Constance is one of the most famous lakes for water sports in the Alpine foothills. All kinds of water sports enthusiasts can be found here: sailors, kite-surfers, rowers, divers – and, of course, motorboats. In an effort to reconcile nature conservation and water sports, the state government of Baden-Württemberg has produced a 48-page PDF document that takes into account the interests of organised sports and the state nature conservation association. In particular, the document states that protected areas should be designated (or have already been designated) from which water sports enthusiasts should stay away. The 8 rules of behaviour for water sports enthusiasts listed above also fit into this.

If you want to enjoy a sustainable holiday on the German side of Lake Constance, take a look at Naturresort Gerbehof! Here you can enjoy a climate positive holiday and all the food is certified organic.

#2 HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio Allgäu – Water sports as a destination

Lake Constance is just an hour’s drive from the HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio Allgäu. Closer by (around 30 minutes by car) is the Immenstadt region, where there is a water skiing centre and rafting providers.

The HUBERTUS is a sustainably-run wellness hotel that caters for hikers who prefer to explore nature on foot. But if water sports are just one facet of your holiday and you value things like mindfulness, yoga and tranquillity, this is the place for you.

#3 Das Rübezahl – Stand up paddling on Lake Forggensee

Lake Forggensee in the Allgäu region is just six kilometres from the Alpine Boutique Hotel Das Rübezahl. The large reservoir near Füssen is in season from June to mid-October. In winter, the water is drained to absorb snowmelt from the mountains and rainfall.

The Forggensee SUP season opens on 2 June. There are SUP rentals and numerous courses or group tours (e.g. at sunrise and sunset).

Sustainable Water Sports in Switzerland

#1 CERVO Mountain Resort – Water Skiing and Wakeboarding

The CERVO Mountain Resort offers you that beach feeling in the middle of the mountains during the summer months with a water ski and wakeboard lift on Lake Schalisee in the neighbouring village of Täsch. The lift is electrically operated and is dismantled in the autumn.

Admittedly: Water-skiing and wake-boarding are not really sustainable water sports, as they are transported by motorboat or electric lift. This is primarily a summer tourist attraction.

At the Shabby Yummy Cantina, right on the lake, you can treat yourself to delicious shali fries with truffle oil and parmesan and other Mediterranean snacks.

Opening times summer 2024: from 8 June 11.00 to 17.30 (closed in bad weather)

Giving up motorised water sports in favour of sustainability?

Finally, we would like to know your opinion: should motorised water sports such as jet skis and speedboats be allowed to continue or should they be banned altogether?

The sound of the ocean, an endless horizon, the surface of the water glistening in the sun, and fine, soft sand under your feet… There is something special about sandy beaches, and we all understand, why they belong to the most popular vacation destinations. But did you know that sand is a finite resource and that entire stretches of coastline are already depleted? Learn about the state of our beaches, the importance of a sustainable beach vacation, and what it looks like.

Sand – Our most important resource after water

Like the sand of the sea. Meaning: infinitely available. But this general saying is no longer true. Sand is the most used resource in the world (after water). This is due to concrete – a mixture of cement with sand/gravel and water. It has been the most widely used building material since the 19th century, especially in urban construction. As we reported in this blog post about villages in motion, more and more people are moving to cities, and the construction boom there is consuming huge amounts of concrete, both for buildings and infrastructure.

Sand industy
Sand is a sought-after raw material. Sand from inland gravel pits is currently considered the most environmentally friendly solution. When extracting sand from coastal regions, the impact on nature is a risk factor. ©Parilov | Stock.Adobe.com

Using sand, Singapore added landmass

The biggest consumers of sand today are Asia’s booming economies. Singapore, for example, has dumped 500 million tons into the sea to gain land. According to Deutschlandfunk, the sand came from Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Thailand. By sucking the sand from the seabed, 24 sand islands in Indonesia sank. In response, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Malaysia have already banned the export of their sand. Experts expect Africa to follow suit in the coming years. With rapidly growing populations, cities will expand and grow explosively.

Sand theft for luxury resorts?

In 2008, a sand heist in Jamaica made headlines when 500 truckloads of the finest sand were stolen overnight from a fishing village. It will take several hundred years for that beach – and the local habitat – to regenerate. The theft was a disaster for the local ecosystem. The case was never solved, but the fine sand was probably sold to luxury resorts for their beaches.

There have also been several reports of sand robbery around Lake Victoria in East Africa. This shows that the resource is not only freely available in abundance but also valuable and desirable.

1.   Rule: You must come to the beach, not the beach to you!

Don’t support hotels that have a fine sandy beach right outside while the rest of the coast is rocky or pebbly. Sure, there are some natural sandy beaches among rocks, but always ask yourself if that is the case here. Purchased sandy beaches come from a different ecosystem and are missing there! Moreover, the artificial transport of sand to the coast is not ecological. So, either accept the rocky beach and enjoy the rugged landscape, or find a destination where the beach is as natural as you want it to be.

Sustainable eco-hotels on dream beaches

At Green PearlsⓇ you’ll find some green pearls that are located right on beautiful beaches and are also committed to sustainability. Here is a brief look at six of them:

#1: ADLER Spa Resort SICILIA – Protected beach

The six-kilometer-long beach in front of the ADLER Spa Resort SICILIA is a WWF protected area and one of the most beautiful beaches in Sicily. Since the beach of the “Riserva Naturale Torre Salsa” is lined with dunes and cliffs, you will hardly find any tourists except for the guests of the resort. The staff works with the WWF to preserve biodiversity and the local ecosystem, and regularly cleans the beach of washed-up plastic. Experience a protected and well-kept beach in southern Italy.

#2 Cerf Island Resort in the Seychelles – Dream Beach on a Water Reserve

Cerf island Resort
Cerf Island is located in the middle of a protected marine park. Here you can walk from one sandy beach to the next. © Cerf Island Resort

Cerf Island is only 1.5 km long and 1 km wide. So, you are amidst pure sandy beaches. And there’s more. The crystal clear waters with its colorful underwater world and mangrove trees are part of the Saint-Anne National Marine Park. Guided tours through the National Marine Park – either above the water on kayak tours or underwater with diving and snorkeling – will teach you a lot about life in the Indian Ocean.

#3 Puri Dajuma – Eco-resort with private beach in Bali

Bali is famous for its white dream beaches, tropical nature and magical atmosphere. Puri Dajuma is an eco-resort that focuses on waste reduction, social responsibility, and sustainable tourism. Stay in small, luxurious Balinese-style cottages on a private, picture-postcard beach.

Tip: Before you pack your bags and travel to Bali, we recommend you to read our article about Bali and its dark side. For example, a local tells you what tourists often do wrong in Bali.

#4 Zeavola – Barefoot in luxury on Koh Phi Phi Leh in Thailand

Zeavola
This hammock is waiting for you! © Zeavola

Barefoot in luxury is the lifestyle you can enjoy at Zeavola. Stay in naturally designed villas and drift between beach, culinary delights, and spa – always feeling the sand beneath your feet. Located on the Thai island of Koh Phi Phi Leh, the resort also offers PADI scuba diving courses, where experienced guides introduce you to the beautiful underwater world of coral reefs.

#5 Gili Lankanfushi – Fine sand, palms and corals

At Gili Lankanfushi, rooms are not on the beach overlooking the ocean – they are on the ocean overlooking the beach! As the lowest country in the world, the Maldives are the most affected by rising sea levels. You can read more about this in our blog on endangered islands. This makes it all the more important to focus on sustainable tourism and choose an eco-friendly resort, like Gili Lankanfushi.

#6 Lifestylehotel SAND at the Baltic Sea Beach

The Lifestylehotel SAND is located in the second row of the German Baltic Sea beach in Timmendorfer Strand. As the Baltic Sea can be quite windy, it’s best to book a typical wicker beach chair on the beach. That way you only have the sand under your feet and not everywhere else.

As the name of the hotel suggests, the sand of the Baltic Sea beach is a source of inspiration for the sustainable and natural design of the hotel.

9 Tips for a sustainable beach vacation

Wedding rings carried in shells © Cerf Island Resort
Building on the beach with sand, making shell pictures or (like in this picture) hiding wedding rings is wonderful – but you should leave the sand on the beach afterward. ©Cerf Island Resort

  1. Coral-friendly sunscreens: Sunscreens with nanoparticles are harmful to corals and possibly other marine life such as shellfish. Make sure you choose the right sunscreen when swimming in the ocean. Look for labels such as “Reef Safe”, “Coral Safe” or similar.
  2. Water sports: Instead of jet skis or other motorized sports, choose gentle sports like SUP, kayaking, or surfboarding. You will be able to enjoy nature and the sea much more. Sound of the sea instead of engine noise 🙂
  3. Campfires: Check to see if fires are allowed on the beach. If so, use only untreated wood and be sure to extinguish the fire and dispose of the ashes properly. (And no, shoveling sand over the fire is not the same as extinguishing or disposing of it!)
  4. Do not take sand home as a souvenir: It is best to leave the sand where it belongs. Including the classic sand jar as a souvenir. Here you can find out why.
  5. Avoid plastic: Go to the beach and see the debris that washes ashore and you will realize that plastic is a real problem! So avoid plastic wrappers, bags, and toys that could end up in the ocean.
  6. Pick up your trash – and other people’s trash: When you clean up your area, be kind enough to pick up trash that doesn’t belong to you. This is especially true of cigarette butts. They contain toxic substances that are harmful to waterways.
  7. Respect the locals: Research the culture of your destination and whether going topless is considered disrespectful. For example, in some countries, men should wear bathing shorts up to their knees.
  8. Be mindful of the marine life: Coral is especially important not to touch or damage. But the same goes for all other marine life – leave them alone and observe them as guests. And never feed seabirds! It can be harmful to them.
  9. Read books about sand and sea: If you like to lie on the beach with a book, use the time to read books about the sea, sand, or climate change – it will make you more aware of where you are.

Vacation by the sea – without a sandy beach

Not every coast has a sandy beach. And ecologically speaking, it would be completely wrong for tourists to expect sandy beaches everywhere – and thus indirectly contribute to sand depletion (keyword: supply and demand). However, many countries have found ways to make even steep coastlines attractive. “Here in Tenerife, the “piscinas naturales” are widespread and very popular with both guests and locals,” says the OCÉANO Health Spa Hotel. “They are sheltered pools in the sea that fill with natural seawater. One is right in front of the OCÉANO”.

We hope we have given you some good tips for your next beach vacation and helped you appreciate (and protect) the natural wonder that is sand).

PS: People are already thinking about how to build when the sand really runs out. Recycled concrete is the answer. Unfortunately, there is still little interest in the industry. Our prediction: As long as politicians do not pass laws and force the industry to do so, nothing will happen in the area of sand conservation. This makes it all the more important to support sustainability and resource conservation wherever we can.

Are you already dreading the dark winter days and long nights? Believe me, you are not alone! More and more people are escaping the dark, cold and wet season by heading south. Sun, sea and pleasant temperatures sound more tempting than slush and fog. In this blog article, we will take you by the hand and show you how the so-called “snowbirds” prepare and what you should keep in mind. And we wouldn’t be us if we didn’t pick out some (sustainable) destinations for your long-term vacation as well!

Long-term vacation – yes, please!

Thanks to home offices and remote working, it’s no longer just well-heeled retirees who have the privilege of escaping the winter of the Northern Hemisphere. More and more younger people prefer the Canary Islands or Portugal to the sleet. The buzzwords here are snowbirds, long-term travel, workation and vanlife.

But can you just take off on a long-term vacation? Unfortunately, that’s not possible in most cases, even if you’re self-employed. You should prepare for it in advance. We have put together a handy planning checklist that you can simply copy, print and tick off.

Preparing for wintering in the south – planning checklist to check off

In the flat / house

  • Arrange for someone to air the house regularly while you are away to prevent mold.
  • Do not turn off the heating completely! Keep the heat on low while you are away to prevent mold.

Tip: Find a subtenant

If you decide to sublet, start looking for a suitable subtenant well in advance. If you are renting yourself, get your landlord’s permission first. There are also opportunities through housesitting websites.

  • Remember that you may need someone to shovel snow and empty the mailbox for you.
  • Set up a forwarding address if necessary.

At work

  • Find out if and how you can work remotely and discuss the details with your employer. For more tips on working remotely, check out this blog post.
  • Familiarize yourself with the technology and, if necessary, set up or reconfigure your laptop. For example, think about Software keys, server access, mail program, and logins.

Documents and Organizational Matters

  • Find out if you need a visa for an extended stay at your destination. In most EU countries, this is not the case for EU citizens. A stay of six months and one day is usually critical, as you will be spending more time abroad than in your homeland.
  • Will your passport or identity card be valid long enough?
  • Get travel health insurance for the entire stay.
  • Get a credit card and perhaps a debit card that will allow you to withdraw money abroad free of charge. Remember to activate them for your destination country.
  • Make sure your cell phone or SIM card will work in your destination country, and that you will not be charged for roaming or need to get a new one.
  • Check your immunization status and update certain vaccinations if necessary. If you are traveling far, it is best to consult a travel or tropical medicine physician.

Sustainable Destinations for your Long-Term-Vacation

Pleasant temperatures and sunshine are the ingredients for a perfect long-term stay. However, many of the destinations we know from summer vacations are also rainy in winter, although not quite as cold. Nevertheless, you should make sure that your destination has heating. Especially, accommodations that are normally only used for summer vacations often do not have heating.

In Europe, the top destinations for a long-term vacation in the winter are Portugal, the Spanish region of Andalusia, and Greece. Outside Europe, popular wintering destinations for snowbirds include South Africa, Southeast Asia and the US state of Florida.

Wintering sustainably in the South

You can take the same sustainability measures on a long-term vacation as you would at home. Especially if you are staying in a vacation home or apartment and cooking for yourself, try to buy local and seasonal. Heat only as much as you need, and dispose of your waste properly and as separately as possible. For more tips on sustainable travel, click here.

Sustainable wintering in the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands, off the west coast of the African continent, have always been a popular destination for people looking to escape the winter. Their mild climate and proximity to the sea make them ideal for this purpose. If you don’t feel like staying in a holiday apartment or villa, you’ll find what you’re looking for in the islands’ hotels. They often offer discounts for longer stays.

Sea views instead of slush in Tenerife

At the OCÉANO Health Spa Hotel, extended stays are the rule rather than the exception. It is not uncommon for guests and spa guests to stay for around three weeks. Even outside of the spa and fasting offerings of the sustainable health hotel, travelers are happy to spend a month and a half at OCÉANO in the winter, enjoying the amenities of the oceanfront hotel.

One island away, Gran Canaria invites travelers to take advantage of the mild temperatures for all kinds of excursions and activities. Getting out instead of staying in is the motto for wintering in the south. Casa León Royal Retreat is happy to help with suggestions and guided hiking and mountain biking tours. In winter, Gran Canaria is a popular destination for climbers who don’t want to miss out on outdoor climbing during the wet and cold seasons.

A Winter in Southern Italy

While the north of the long country Italy is not so cold in winter, but quite rainy, the south attracts with mild temperatures. Even swimming in the sea is still possible in some places.

On request, you can even get an office kit for your long-term vacation or work (including an external keyboard and mouse, desk lamp, multiple sockets and everything else you need to work). Or you can just use the bright conference room, which turns into a co-working space when not in use.

Wintering in the South – Sicily

A little further south, Sicily, with its rugged nature and rich history, invites you to stay longer. In addition to the mild climate, historical sites, nature shaped by the volcano Etna and wild coastal areas await you. This is also the case in the Torre Salsa nature reserve on the south coast. At its “gate” you will find the ADLER Spa Resort SICILIA, a true refuge of peace and relaxation. It is the perfect place to escape from stress and hectic, especially during the December holidays.

Summer, Sun, Seychelles – Sustainable Long-Term Holidays in the Tropics for Snowbirds

The above destinations weren’t exotic enough for your winter escape? Do you want sun, beach, turquoise water and palm trees? Then how about a long-term vacation in the Seychelles? On the one hand, a longer stay is worth the flight, on the other hand, you have the chance to really get to know the culture and the people. And who has not dreamed of winter under palm trees?

If you want to book a hotel for all or part of the time, we can highly recommend the Cerf Island Resort. The resort, with its authentic Creole bungalows, is adjacent to the Sainte Anne Marine National Park, making it the perfect base for exploring by kayak or for snorkeling and diving excursions.

Experience Thailand on an extended vacation

Much like the Seychelles, the long journey is what keeps sustainable travelers from vacationing in this Southeast Asian country. On the ground, however, you can travel in a very eco-friendly and socially responsible way! For example, there are several overnight train connections that make traveling by train in Thailand convenient. So why not combine your extended vacation with a slow travel adventure?

Eco-friendly accommodations are available almost everywhere and for every budget. For a few days of pure luxury, check into the Zeavola Resort on Koh Phi Phi. Located right on the beach, the resort offers “barefoot luxury” and a large, natural garden into which the bungalows blend.

Wintering in the South – A sustainable Long-Term Vacation

Long-term vacations are a great way to travel sustainably. Because here it is already in the concept to stay in one place for a long time. This is good for the environment and also for the local people. They benefit from the fact that you spend more money (make sure to buy as much as possible locally and not from international franchises) and get to know the culture and way of life in detail. Of course, the type of accommodation you choose is even more important if you are staying for a longer period of time. So: keep your eyes open and book long-term 🙂

What would appeal to you about a long-term vacation? Or have you ever spent a winter in the South?

The best ideas for a family summer vacation are less about where you go and more about the experiences you have together. And they should be as sustainable and eco-friendly as possible! Want to bring history lessons to life? Paestum or Paris are great for this. Or is it nature that brings you together as a family? Mountains, the sea, national parks, jungles. Of course, depending on the region, there are also exciting animals to discover. Wolves, for example. Find out where you can get active with your teens this summer or relax at a resort with your baby.

Our family vacation tips

#1 Family Adventure in the Black Forest (Germany)

“380 meters of pure adrenaline” promises the Wildline Suspension Bridge in Bad Wildbad. It is a narrow bridge 60 meters high with a view 300 meters below – down into the Enz Valley and Bad Wildbad. It is the only suspension bridge of its kind in Europe. The adventure destination is also directly connected to a fairy tale trail.

  • Suitable for: Families with children aged 6 to 14
  • Web link: https://wildline.de/
  • Suitable accommodation:

SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA, Bad Herrenalb, Germany: This sustainable hotel has a large spa area for parents and a snack garden with insects and small animals that kids will love. Especially practical: At the hotel, you’ll receive the KONUS guest card, which gives you free rides on public transportation in the Enzkreis region for the duration of your stay.

#2 Golf (Gran Canaria and Austria)

Golf is a much less “environmentally unfriendly” sport than many people think. At least if you choose a golf course that is close to nature. These are not only meadows, but also lakes, streams, planted (native) trees and flowers. You will find more biodiversity than in any football stadium. As a golf vacation destination, we recommend the Canary Island of Gran Canaria, because here the golf season has 365 days. Now in summer, the Bucklige Welt in Lower Austria is especially beautiful if you are looking for golf courses close to nature!

  • Suitable for: Families who know how to play golf or want to learn. Many golf professionals have started playing golf as young as 5 years old, so you are the best judge of whether this is suitable for your children. Otherwise, we have heard from golf professionals that 14 is a good age to start.
  • Suitable accommodations:

Casa León Royal Retreat, Gran Canaria: This boutique hotel is close to five golf courses and offers a shuttle service. Family weeks are offered in the summer for families with young children between June 12th and September 4th (and in winter between March 18th and March 31st).

Gut Guntrams, Schwarzau / Steinfeld (near Vienna), Austria: The “Bio-Refugium” has several exceptional accommodations, including two family apartments for 4 people. You stay in the middle of nature with a natural pond, organic farming and the forest nearby. The owners themselves have recommended golf as a natural summer activity for families and will be happy to advise you.

#3 Mountain Hiking (Austria and South Tyrol)

Hiking is considered one of the healthiest sports and is suitable for all ages. In the Alps you will find a wide variety of hiking trails, from easy and short to multi-day tours. There is something for everyone.

  • Suitable for: Vacations with hiking kids, spry grandfathers, aunts from Overseas and other relatives.
  • Accommodations:

Summit Lodges Pfunds, Tirol, Austria: In the center of Pfunds are two American-Canadian-style log cabins that you can book for your family summer vacation. Each has two bedrooms, a living room and a fully equipped kitchen. They host up to six people, and the Tyrolean mountains start right outside your door.

Paradiso Pure.Living, Seiser Alm, South Tyrol, Italy: The first purely vegan/vegetarian hotel in the Dolomites is located at an altitude of over 2,000 meters and has developed a special hiking guide for mountain hikers, “5 Epic Hikes around Paradiso,” which details the best tours.

#4 E-biking in Allgäu (Germany)

Do you feel like everyone else has an e-bike but you? Electric assistance is extremely practical, especially off-road and in the mountains. In many places you can rent e-bikes and explore the surroundings on extended bike tours.

  • Suitable for: Families with teenagers or if you already have an e-bike with a seat for smaller children
  • Suitable accommodation:

HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio Allgäu, Germany: Not only can you rent e-bikes at this sustainable wellness hotel in the foothills of the Alps, but you can also book a bike safety course. There’s a special bike guide, and Karl or Marc Traubel, members of the owners’ family, accompany guests on the “Hike & Bike” activity themselves. “We want to encourage our guests to do outdoor sports and enjoy nature,” says HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio.

#5 SUP in Croatia

Stand Up Paddling (SUP) is also one of those trendy sports that everyone has been doing for a few years now! Why not you too? A beautiful place for it is the island of Korčula in Croatia. In the Adriatic Sea you will find not only turquoise water, but also great rocky coasts with caves to discover.

  • Suitable for: the whole family 🙂
  • Suitable accommodation:

ECO-APARTMENT HOTEL THE DREAMERS’ CLUB, Korčula, Croatia: The eco-aparthotel rents out six apartments for 2 to 5 people, including a breakfast made from organic ingredients, which you can enjoy on the terrace. It’s only 50 meters to the sea, and you can rent SUPs right there. There is also a playground for small children.

#6 Boating and wild beaches in Italy

Another great destination for those who love the sea is Italy. Here are two places to stay that are right on the beach:

  • Suitable for: Young parents who know that their children can happily spend hours on the sand and then enjoy some togetherness in the evening.
  • Suitable accommodations:

A’ Cràpa Mangia, Salerno, Italy: There are several well-appointed apartments for 2 to 8 people. All have a terrace with sea view. In addition to boat trips, you can make various excursions in Campania from here. A highlight is the Greek archaeological site of Paestum.

ADLER Spa Resort SICILIA, Italy: If you really want to pamper yourself, you’ll find everything your heart desires at this Sicilian spa resort. In addition to direct access to the beach (a designated WWF nature reserve), there’s an indoor/outdoor pool and a large spa area. There’s also regional cuisine. A new feature is a signposted biodiversity trail through the Torre Salsa nature reserve to the beach.

#7 Discovering the jungle (Amazon, Peru)

Are you one of those who, as a family, loves to watch National Geographic and your greatest desire is to discover the jungle? Then the Peruvian dry season between May and September (i.e. winter there) is the best time to travel!

  • Suitable for: Adventurer families
  • Suitable accommodation:

Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica, Peru: The rooms and suites are located directly in Amazon Rainforest and there is a wide range of different guided tours on which you can discover the unique flora and fauna with an expert. If you are interested in history, Inkaterra also offers accommodations at the ancient excavation sites of the Incas (Machu Picchu etc.).

#8 Sustainable Diving (Thailand and the Seychelles)

The fact that the underwater world has a delicate balance has become known worldwide thanks to the Thai island of Ko Phi Phi Leh, where “The Beach” from the Hollywood movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio is located. 18 years after the movie hit the big screen, about 90 percent of the coral at Maya Bay was damaged because motorboat tourists dumped their trash there and inexperienced snorkelers touched coral.

Dive resorts, on the other hand, teach you to respect the marine environment. There are even dive schools that clean corals of marine plastic or replant coral fragments in coral nurseries.

  • Suitable for: There is no age limit for snorkeling; scuba diving should begin no earlier than age eight, according to the Association of German Scuba Divers.
  • Suitable accommodations:

Zeavola, Ko Phi Phi, Thailand: Located on the aforementioned dream island of Ko Phi Phi Leh, Zeavola is a designated dive hotel that offers PADI courses and rents equipment.

Cerf Island Resort, Seychelles: Cerf Island Resort is located in the middle of the aquatic reserve, Sainte Anne Marine National Park. The resort consists of 24 villas and suites where you can enjoy privacy as a family. Snorkeling equipment can be rented for free and there are daily guided diving tours – e.g. to Turtle Rock or Shark Bank.

#9 Relaxing in Germany

Just longing for relaxation and a beautiful place to enjoy nature with your family? There are plenty of corners to do that in Germany! How about the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Rhön or the Baltic Sea?

  • Suitable for: the family, with big and small (up to 6 people).
  • Accommodations:

Küchenhaus STURM, Mellrichstadt, Germany: the Küchenhaus STURM includes an upper floor with 3 bedrooms (6 beds) and a basement with living area and open kitchen. Not only are you in the middle of nature here, but you’re also close to Hotel STURM, where you can use the swimming pond and spa area for free. The highlight is the 3,500-square-meter snack garden. “See, smell, collect, taste or simply relax.” is the motto here. The whole area is managed ecologically and all discovered fruits may be snacked.

Gut Nisdorf, Baltic Sea, Germany: Here there are family-friendly vacation apartments, each with two or three rooms. The children can occupy themselves in the garden or on the playground, while the parents relax in the beach chair.

#10 City trip (Milan and Paris)

City trip as a summer vacation with the family? A wonderful idea! With so much cultural input, your kids will have plenty to talk about at school after the vacations. An ecological advantage: you can reach metropolises in an environmentally friendly way by train or long-distance bus, and you can also get around locally by public transport.

  • Suitable for: Families with interested children who can be taken to the museum or young parents whose baby still sleeps in a sling most of the time.
  • Accommodations:

Green Spirit Hotels, 7th district, Paris, France: To discover Paris, we have a real insider tip for you: In the lively 7th district, there are three green budget hotels: Hotel Le Pavillon, Hotel Malar and Hotel Amélie. Here you are surrounded by boutiques and cafés and can reach the Seine, the Eiffel Tower, the Champs Élysées and other sights within walking distance. The 2- and 3-star hotels are creative and individual – each room is different.

Hotel Milano Scala, Milan, Italy: Hotel Milano Scala was the first ever zero-emissions hotel in Milan and is a pioneer in the sustainable hotel industry. It is centrally located in the Brera district. The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, Castello Sforzesco, La Scala and the city’s luxury shopping streets are all just a stone’s throw away. The hotel also has a gorgeous rooftop terrace.

#11 Visit Wolves (Germany)

Wolves are predators with a sense of family. Mother and father wolves live together in a monogamous partnership throughout their lives, guiding their children. Although the wolf is not considered an endangered species globally, it was virtually extinct in Western Europe for over a hundred years. It is only in the last 70 years or so that wolves have returned. How this came about is one of the many exciting stories you can learn with your children at the Wolfcenter Dörverden.

  • Suitable for: Families with elementary school children and “Twilight”-loving teenagers.
  • Web link: https://www.wolfcenter.de/
  • Accommodation:

Okelmann’s, Warpe, Germany: The family members running the hotel, recommended to us by the Wolfcenter. “We’re happy to help and advise our guests,” they report, “There’s super much to do!” In addition to wolves, alpacas are also on the list of exciting animals to discover here.

#12 Family vacation for train enthusiasts in South Tyrol.

Many children are fascinated by train rides. As an adult, you may have had some annoying experiences and therefore you may not be so euphoric anymore – but get infected – there are the platforms, the announcements, the rails, the compartments, the flying landscape, the tunnels… South Tyrol in the Italian Alps is one of the destinations that can be reached by train on beautiful routes.

  • Suitable for: the whole family
  • Where to stay:

Hotel Weihrerhof, Ritten, South Tyrol, Italy: The Weihrerhof is a family-friendly hotel located on the shores of Lake Wolfsgruben at an altitude of over 1,200 meters. In addition to a bathing lake with boats, there is also a stream and a playground where children can have a great time. And back to the train: “A nice activity for the young and the young at heart is certainly a ride on the Ritten narrow-gauge railway – free with the RittenCard and, of course, environmentally friendly!

#1 Leave home sustainably

When you’re traveling, make sure to turn off the heat, turn off stand-by appliances, and if you’re going away for a long time, unplug the fridge. This tip comes from the SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA in Bad Herrenalb, Germany. The hotel is a leader in Germany for sustainability. New “Circular Living” rooms have just been built at the hotel. In accordance with the Cradle to Cradle® principle, only materials that can be recycled are used in these rooms.

#2 Durable luggage

A quality suitcase should last a lifetime of traveling and be something you can easily borrow from family or friends. The longer the lifespan, the better the eco-balance. For the transportation of your suitcase by train, the South Tyrolean Hotel Weihrerhof on Lake Wolfsgruben (one of the cleanest lakes in Italy) will pay for you. In this way the hotel would like to help you to arrive in an environmentally friendly way. You need to stay at least one week to be entitled to this. You will also receive the Ritten Card. With the Ritten Card you can use the local public transport free of charge.

#3 Arrival by public transport

According to the Naturhotel Outside in East Tyrol, arriving and departing are responsible for about 70 percent of a vacation’s CO2 emissions. That’s why the nature hotel, located in Austria’s Hohe Tauern Alpine National Park, wants to encourage guests to travel in a CO₂-friendly way. There’s a free shuttle service from Lienz train station to the hotel for those arriving by train. A guest card is available for public transportation.

#4 Bring your own slippers

Some services at the hotel create mountains of waste. These include bathing slippers. According to a study by Focus, various hotel chains order up to 180,000 pairs of disposable slippers each year that are wrapped in plastic – made to be thrown away! Some organic hotels already offer reusable slippers. These are cleaned by the hotel. However, bringing your own slippers from home is recommended at the HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio Allgäu in Balderschwang, Bavaria. In the “Mountain Spring Spa” you can still wear the (durable) hotel bathrobe for that hotel feeling 🙂

#5 Ditch the plastic

It’s hard to believe, but the global plastic boom is less than 100 years old! According to NABU, “only” 1.5 million tons of plastic were produced worldwide in the 1950s – today it is already around 400 million tons per year! The German Federal Environment Agency estimates: “More than 100 million tons of plastic waste are already in the oceans. Keemala Villa Wonderland’s commitment to plastic-free living is a special one. The resort is located on the Thai island of Phuket in the Indian Ocean. It has made a conscious decision not to use single-use plastics such as plastic bottles or straws. The Keemala therefore advises that: “Avoiding plastic waste helps prevent pollution.”

#6 Bring Jute Bags

A very simple step to avoid plastic is to do without plastic bags for shopping. When you travel, bring your own jute bags. If you forget, you’ll get reusable shopping bags at the ECO-APARTHOTEL THE DREAMERS’ CLUB. The eco-aparthotel has 6 accommodation units for 2-5 people. You can spend a wonderful vacation as a couple or a family, right next to the beach.

#7 Low impact activity

Instead of motorboat and ski hall, you can choose eco-friendly activities in your vacation. ADLER Lodge RITTEN in South Tyrol has developed a “Green Mobility” concept for its guests. This includes a free Ritten Card for local transport and the display of all public transport connections in the hotel’s internal Guestnet. Guests can also rent e-bikes and outdoor equipment free of charge. Guided hikes and e-bike tours are also available free of charge.

#8 Avoid questionable animal activities

Sometimes on vacation you come across animal activities that you know are NOT species-appropriate – swimming with dolphins, taking a picture with the monkey at the bar! The Cerf Island Resort in the Seychelles wants to help preserve the beautiful nature with white sandy beaches, tropical plants and crystal clear water for future generations. It is surrounded by the National Marine Park. At the marine reserve, you can learn about sustainable diving. You can also explore the area by canoe in an eco-friendly way.

#09 Respect local culture and people

“Eco-friendly travel is also about the strengthening of the local culture and region. Eat and drink locally and seasonally,” recommends the sustainable hotel STURM in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Rhön. By doing so, you will support the local farmers, have short delivery routes and enjoy an authentic experience”. The STURM itself implements this through its own Genussgarten, where herbs, vegetables and fruits are grown.

#10Offset CO₂.

There are already zero-emissions hotels, like the Milano Scala Hotel in downtown Milan, where staying means not emitting any CO₂. Other hotels go out of their way to determine your CO₂ emissions and offer to compensate you. That’s what the CERVO Mountain Resort in Zermatt, Switzerland, does. With views of the Matterhorn, the hotel has little messages for you all over the place about energy and resource conservation, waste separation, and more.

#11 Local Souvenirs

Sustainable souvenirs are one of our last tips for eco-friendly travel. For example, you can buy one at the small concept store of Hotel Okelmann’s in Warpe, Lower Saxony. Sisters Maren and Kristin Okelmann sell handmade products like dog accessories, soaps, chocolates and gifts that you can’t buy anywhere else!

As you can see: Eco-friendly travel is not only better for nature – it’s also more individual, healthier and fun! Do you have some more tips?

“I wish everybody had the chance to visit a national park,” says Barack Obama in the Netflix series “Our Great National Parks”. Here you could “experience the sheer joy and wonder of nature.” But national parks are not only places for recreation and adventure, they play an important role in protecting species on land and in the water. We would like to introduce you to 7 international protected areas and their sustainable accommodations for a national park vacation.

National parks for enjoyment

One of the goals of a national park is to provide a place for people to enjoy. The natural landscapes worthy of protection are very diverse: snow-capped mountain peaks and glaciers, water-protected areas with giant turtles, volcanoes, rain forests, or sandy beaches. Each protected area has its own special characteristics and is home to unique flora and fauna

One of Europe’s largest protected areas: The Hohe Tauern Alpine National Park

Although the first national parks were established in the early 20th century, most of the world’s national parks were created after World War II. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), there are now more than 6,500 national parks (category II) and other protected areas.

In Austria, the first national park, the Hohe Tauern National Park, was established in 1981. It is one of the largest and most impressive in Central Europe. Outstanding (in the truest sense of the word) is the Großglockner, the highest mountain in Austria. At 3,798 meters, it dominates the panorama along with a whole group of three thousand meter peaks.

Quick facts about the Hohe Tauern National Park

Country: Austria (Salzburg, Tyrol, Carinthia)

Size: 1,800 qkm

Special features: Characteristic of the Hohe Tauern National Park are the dream peaks of the Großglockner (3,798 m), Großvenediger (3,657 m) and Kitzsteinhorn (3,203 m), as well as glacier fields and glacially formed valleys and valley heads.

Animals: Due to its size, almost all species of animals and plants in the Alps can be found here. Despite the high altitude and long winters (up to eight months), there are about 10,000 different species. Apart from the ibex and the chamois, tourist love especially the golden eagle and the marmots. The latter had become rare due to the hunting of marmot fat, but has been successfully reintroduced. Since 1986, the bearded vulture has been seen again in the sky.

Plants: Up to the tree line at about 2,000 m there are extensive forests of spruce, larch and Swiss stone pine. From April to July, the purple Rudolph’s saxifrage blooms, which is unique to the Hohe Tauern.

Your sustainable accommodation in the Hohe Tauern National Park

If you want to spend your National Park vacation in the Hohe Tauern, we recommend the Naturhotel Outside, located right in it. Here you can explore the Alps with the hotel’s mountain and hiking experts. You can also enjoy regional cuisine and a wellness area. The family-run hotel is now in its third generation.

Berchtesgaden National Park: one of the oldest national parks in Germany

Germany had its first national park in 1970 (Bavarian Forest National Park) and the second followed in 1978: Berchtesgaden National Park. It is the only German national park in the Alps with the Watzmann massif as its highest point. The sustainable Berghotel Rehlegg is located in the middle of the Berchtesgaden National Park. Here you’ll have a direct view of the Watzmann from your balcony (or heated outdoor pool).

Hike to the Watzmann

You don’t need any special skills to hike from the Berghotel Rehlegg to the Watzmann. Even a beginner can do this beautiful hike in about 3 to 3.5 hours. If you have alpine experience, you can climb from the Watzmannhaus to the summit in another 3 hours.

Also close to the Berchtesgaden Alpine National Park (about 20 kilometers away) is the Klosterhof – Alpine Hideaway & Spa in Bayerisch Gmain. This family-run hotel is beautifully secluded amidst the alpine panorama and caters to the health-conscious. After an active day in nature, you can relax in the large spa area with sauna landscape, outdoor pool, indoor pool and brine bath.

Quick facts about Berchtesgaden National Park:

Country: Germany (Bavaria)

Size: 208 qkm

Special features: Alpine national park with the Watzmann, Göll and Brett mountains.

Animals: There are about 80 species of mammals and 100 species of birds in the Alps. You’ll meet the “King of the Alps”, the ibex, as well as roe deer, red deer, chamois and in the sky circles the golden eagle.

Plants: A large part of the National Park is forest, with the most famous conifer being the Swiss stone pine, whose essential oils are said to have many beneficial properties. You will also find many beautiful and sometimes rare alpine plants such as edelweiss and gentian.

Sainte Anne Marine National Park – Seychelles’ water paradise

A very different natural landscape from the Alps can be found in the Seychelles. The archipelago off East Africa consists of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean. It’s a tropical dream of white beaches and coconut palms!

The Sainte Anne Marine National Park was established in 1973 and includes eight islands and a protected marine area where water-skiing and fishing are not allowed.

Vacation in the National Park at Cerf Island Resort

The beautiful villas of Cerf Island Resort are located on the Seychelles island of Cerf Island, which is only 1.5 km x 1 km in size. From here, you can explore the fascinating underwater world by diving or canoeing with the resort’s guides. Authentic architecture, professional spa treatments, and local organic cuisine await you at the resort. By vacationing in the Cerf Island National Park, you’ll also be supporting the local staff, who are paid a fair (and above-average) wage by the resort.

Quick facts about Sainte Anne Marine National Park

Country: Seychelles (Islands: Ste. Anne Island, Cerf Island, Île Cachée, Round Island, Long Island, Moyenne Island, Séche Island, Harrison Rock)

Size: The 8 islands have a surface area of less than 4 qkm and the entire national park, including the water protection area, has a surface area of 14.43 qkm.

Special features: White sandy beaches, tropical flair and rare animals.

Animals: Among the rare and endangered species is the Aldabra giant tortoise. It grows over 1 meter tall and weighs up to 250 kg. In addition, the giant tortoise can live up to 120 years! In the water are the whale shark, the stingray, the lion fish and in the skies fly tropical birds like the Seychelles vasa parrot and water birds like the fairy tern.

Plants: One of the largest seagrass fields in the Seychelles thrives underwater. On the islands you will find coconut palms, bananas, mangoes, papayas and passion fruit.

A volcanic landscape in the Teide National Park on Tenerife

The contrast to the tropical islands can be found on the Canary Island of Tenerife on the west side of Africa. Tenerife is dominated by the volcano Teide, the highest mountain in Spain. It is considered harmless (the last eruption was in 1909) and shapes the whole landscape with volcanic rocks.

Meerwasserpool, Oceano Health Spa Hotel, Teneriffa

The beaches of Tenerife have different colors, from gold to red and black. The Oceano Health Spa Hotel is located on the northeast coast, about 45 kilometers from the Teide National Park. If you’re planning an enjoyable time out, you’ll find the perfect setting here, with several saltwater pools and daily yoga offerings.

Quick facts about Teide National Park

Country: Spain (Canary Islands Tenerife)

Size: 189.9 qkm

Special features: The “Pico del Teide” is a dormant volcano and, at 3,715 m, the highest point in all of Spain and the third-highest island volcano in the world. In the national park you will find 38 hiking trails into the volcanic massif. A cable car takes you up to 3,555 meters.

Animals: You will not find big animals here, but special species of lizards like the Lagarto Tizon with its blue neck, rare species of birds (e.g. the blue-feathered Pinzón azul del Teide), butterflies and bats.

Plants: The Teide National Park is characterized by its lava and rock formations. The high mountain massif looks more like a barren lunar landscape. Only in the lower area there are pine trees and pine forest. At higher altitudes, you will find some rare plant species, some of which grow exclusively on Tenerife. Above 3,000 meters grows the Teide violet.

Not every nature reserve is a national park

A national park is a protected area of category II of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The IUCN is the same organization that maintains the list of endangered species.

Protected areas are classified according to their objectives:

IUCN protected areas categories
Table by: ©Green Pearls® Unique Places

As mentioned above, a national park is both about preserving biodiversity and providing recreational space for people. Many national parks run small research stations or have ranger-trained guides to educate tourists about nature.

Size has nothing to do with it. As you have seen, the national park around Cerf Island is only 14 qkm. The Reserva Nacional Tambopata in the Amazon region of Peru, on the other hand, is over 2,700 qkm and is listed in IUCN Category VI: Protected Area with Management. It is aimed at conserving the tropical rainforest

Discover the jungle at Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica

Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica is located in the heart of the Tambopata National Rainforest. As one of the pioneers of ecotourism in Peru, Inkaterra is committed to preserving the environment and respecting nature in all of its accommodations, as well as preserving the cultural heritage of the Incas. At the lodge of Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica, a guide will be waiting for you to explore the Amazon on guided excursions. There are challenging jungle trails as well as kid-friendly tours if you’re traveling with your family.

Quick facts about Reserva Nacional Tambopata

Country: Peru

Size: 2746.9 qkm

Special features: The Amazon Rainforest around the Amazon River is the largest rainforest area in the world, spanning 9 countries in South America.

Animals: The reserve alone is home to approximately 1,200 species of butterflies and 632 species of birds. There are also amphibians, reptiles (such as crocodiles), fish and 169 species of mammals. Mammals include puma, jaguar, ocelot, and many monkeys such as the red howler monkey, Caesarian tamarin, and squirrel monkey.

Plants: You will find famous jungle trees such as the rubber tree, elephant tree, cacao tree and mahogany. This is also the home of beautiful plants such as orchids.

Torre Salsa: Sicily’s WWF reserve protects wild beach

Independent of the IUCN, there are other conservation organizations that manage nature reserves. The WWF (World Wildlife Fund), for example, has established the Torre Salsa reserve. It is a 6 km stretch of beach in Sicily that is difficult to access due to dense vegetation that hardly any tourists come here, and the beach has remained unspoiled. It has a sandy beach, shallow sea and high cliffs.

ADLER Spa Resort SICILIA

ADLER Spa Resort SICILIA takes care of the beach

The Torre Salsa nature reserve is accessible almost exclusively from ADLER Spa Resort SICILIA. The sustainable yet luxurious resort has taken on the responsibility of caring for the beach and regularly cleans the beach of washed up marine plastic with its own staff.

Quick facts about the Torre Salsa WWF Reserve

Country: Italy (Sicily)

Size: 7.61 skm

Special features: The “wildest beach” of Sicily, it is only accessible from the ADLER Spa Resort SICILIA. You won’t find rubbish bins here and you are not allowed to light fires, but you will experience an unspoiled beach where turtles come to lay their eggs.

Animals: In the air you can see (with some luck) birds of prey such as hawks, buzzards and owls, and on the cliffs, Cannaiola. In the water, on dives (also with luck, of course) you’ll meet octopus, squid and swordfish. The small sea turtles Caretta caretta can be found both in the water and on the beach.

Plants: Lemon and orange trees, olives, pines, lavender and many herbs grow around the WWF Reserve Torre Salsa. Part of the concept of the ADLER Spa Resort SICILIA is the cultivation of local plants, which are then used in the restaurant according to the “fork to table” principle.

National Park Vacation Etiquette: What can I do and what cannot?

If you are planning a vacation in a national park, you should be aware of the rules. These include, for example

Taking everything you bring into the park back with you.

Staying on trails and in areas designated for soft tourism

Be aware of the rules regarding flash photography and issues such as lighting and making fires.

Fishing and motorboats are often not allowed

Be aware of noise restrictions

Find out about camping regulations

It’s December. For most of us, this month is automatically associated with the Advent season and Christmas. In Europe, where Christmas tends to be a Christian tradition, that’s no surprise. We begin to see the first gingerbread in supermarket shelves in autumn, and even the last shop window is decorated by the end of November at the latest. Even in countries that aren’t Christian, Christmas is still a big deal. We looked at where and how Christmas is celebrated around the world, as well as which festivals and holidays are important in other countries. Join us on a slightly different trip around the world.

Other countries, different celebrations

Public holidays and festivities depend on the culture of the country. Often religion plays a big role, though not only. Over the years, other events or folk festivals have become permanent holidays, drawing not only locals but tourists as well. For example, Thailand hosts the largest vegan food festival in the world! This is a special experience, not only if you’re vegan and sustainable.

Celebrating in Thailand

Let’s stay in Thailand for a moment. Thailand offers countless festivities and holidays. Not only the celebrations of their Buddhist culture have a high value, but the Thais are looking only for occasions to celebrate. Christmas, Halloween, or Thanksgiving are celebrated enthusiastically and with lots of pompous decoration.

“Traditional” holidays can be roughly divided into religious ones and those associated with the royal family. For instance, on December 5, the king’s birthday is commemorated as a state holiday and many events are held. China’s influence can also be seen in the holidays: Chinese New Year is one of the most important holidays in the country.

Christmas in Thailand

At temperatures above 30 °C, Christmas spirit is hard to come by, unless you go to one of the much air-conditioned shopping malls, in which you will quickly start to freeze without a sweater. However, Thais don’t let midsummer temperatures get them down. They make up for the lack of cold with overloaded, kitsch Christmas decorations. Glittery baubles, garlands and unsustainable artificial snow can be found everywhere. Restaurant and café employees wear Christmas hats, and Christmas music plays from almost every available loudspeaker. In Bangkok, at least, the commercialized Christmas world is overwhelming us.

To escape it all, you can choose a sustainable hotel away from the crowded tourist cities. Instead of the Christmas stress and kitsch, typical Thai bungalows and lots of nature and peace await you at Zeavola, interrupted only by the sounds of birds.

Real Thai holidays: Songkran und Loi Krathong

Songkran takes place around mid-April, the hottest time of the year. It is the most important and also the most famous festival in the country. So if you are traveling in Thailand in April, don’t miss it! However, you should be waterproof. There is water splashing everywhere, which is a welcome cooling with the prevailing temperatures 😉

Songkran has its roots in religion, but today the fun and celebrating together comes first.

Sustainable travel tips for the Songkran festival

  • Try to travel anti-cyclically. As many locals visit family for the Songkran festival, bus, and train tickets from Bangkok to the inland areas sell out quickly and transport is correspondingly full. By the end of the festival, it’s the other way around.
  • Hotel tip: Keemala
Keemala is located on the popular island of Phuket, so you’ll be quickly in the middle of the action of the ‘water festival.’ However, instead of sleeping wet and exhausted in the evening at a noisy hotel located somewhere in the center of the festival, return to a villa wonderland. Various, luxurious villas from tree houses to mud lodgings offer peace and quiet. Keemala is also the ideal retreat if you want to completely escape the chaos surrounding the Songkran festival.

Luck and Wealth

In mid-November, Thailand hosts another important festival. Loi Krathong celebrates the full moon night of the twelfth lunar month. People put small boats made of palm leaves into streams, rivers, and lakes. Inside them are often candles, incense sticks or even coins. The exact origins of this tradition have been lost in the depths of history. Today, floating the small palm leaf boats is said to bring luck and wealth above all.

Maldives and Islamic festivals

Islamic center and mosque at dusk in the capital Male, Maldives

Christmas is not celebrated in the Maldives either. For tourists, the resorts host Christmas dinners on the beach or have Santa bring gifts on a jet ski.

The festivities of the locals are not noticed by travelers, since they are mainly celebrated in the family circle or in the mosques. The Islamic New Year in particular has a high significance.

While religious festivals are held off the tourist trails, you will definitely notice many state festivals and especially the national holiday, the Huravee Festival on February 15, when you visit the main island of Malé. The Huravee Festival commemorates the national hero Sultan Ghaazee Muhammad Thakkurufaan, who liberated the Maldives from 15 years of Portuguese rule.

Sustainable Travel in the Maldives at Gili Lankanfushi

If you ever want to experience the Horavee festival or celebrate Christmas under palm trees, make sure to keep an eye on your ecological footprint. The Maldives islands are a fragile ecosystem and as tourists we have a responsibility to reflect on our actions and reduce the negative impact of our stay. For example, one way is to book a sustainable hotel like the Gili Lankanfushi. This is committed to the environment and the locals. It pays attention to waste avoidance and recycling, and its coral reforestation project can even be supported and maintained by guests. Who needs christmas trees when you can help baby corals grow?

A Creolian Christmas in Seychelles

The people of the islands are Christian in large parts, so that Christmas is a big part of their lives. It is traditional to slaughter a pig on the morning of December 24, which is then served on the table during the holidays. In addition, there are different curries, salads and of course typical desserts such as cassava pudding or Creole cake with papaya jam. The Christmas gift-giving takes place on the morning of December 25.

Colourful festive tradition

In addition to the Christian holidays, the annual Carnival and Festival Kreol attracts locals and tourists alike. The colorful International Creole Parade invites people to celebrate and dance. By the way, it celebrates diversity, international understanding and somehow also simply the joy of life. Simultaneously, the Creole culture is not only cultivated, but also raised in the (international) consciousness. Accompanying the parade are not only parties, but also symposiums, readings, exhibitions and congresses, which provide insight into the culture and roots of the Seychelles.

Calm Getaway for the Carnival International

Carnival on the Seychelles can definitely compete with the big carnival events in Rio de Janeiro or London. If you do not want to miss it, but still do not want to stay in the center of it all, we suggest Cerf Island Resort. You stay in houses inspired by typical Creole architecture, enjoy authentic, sustainable cuisine, and after the excitement of Carnival, you can really wind down and enjoy nature.

Also at Christmas, Cerf Island Resort offers you a relaxing oasis with the right amount of Christmas spirit under palm trees.

Divers Indonesia

As diverse as the islands of Indonesia are, so are their cultures and therefore the festivals that are celebrated. For your travel planning, the many holidays are certainly important to know because many Indonesians go on vacation in their country during this time, and it can get quite crowded. At the same time, you may find yourself in front of closed restaurants and stores in certain places because you didn’t consider a holiday.

Holidays on Bali

We could write a whole book about all the holidays in Indonesia. Instead, we’ll limit ourselves to the home of our partner, Puri Dajuma. Located in Bali, the sustainable hotel is an ideal base for exploring the island or even experiencing significant, Balinese celebrations like Independence Day on August 17. There are so many events, sports competitions and cultural events on this day that you definitely won’t manage to visit even a fraction of them. The day is celebrated all over Indonesia.

Typical Balinese celebrations are Galungan and Kuningan. On Galungan, the victory of good over evil is celebrated. Simultaneously, the ancestral spirits walk the earth during this time. Kuningan is the conclusion of the holidays, when the spirits return to their world.

A special event is the Balinese New Year, which is celebrated meanwhile also on other islands. The Hindu holiday is one of the most important festivals in the country. The special thing about it is that it is spent in complete silence. Instead of driving away the evil spirits with fireworks and firecrackers, as is the custom in Europe, for example, it is said here that the spirits consider the islands uninhabited if one is only hushed. The Balinese New Year or Day of Silence takes place at the end of March. Perhaps we in Europe should be inspired by it. After all, due to the fireworks on New Year’s Eve, particulate pollution on this day is higher than ever.

Celebrate festivities as they fall

The Christmas celebration has also found its way into other countries due to commercialization. So in December, you’ll be greeted by jingle bells, Christmas hats and fairy lights almost everywhere in the world. However, we find it much more interesting to immerse ourselves in the culture of our travel destination and to get to know and experience the respective traditions and festivals. After all, respect for the local culture is also part of sustainable travel and with our sincere interest in it, we can help ensure that this culture is neither forgotten nor commercialized. So be open to the festivals of your destination. And besides: we can have Christmas everywhere 😉

The weather in autumn can really scratch your substance. The golden autumn days with leaves and sunshine are rare. This has a negative effect on us.  Your relationship with your partner is not the only thing that suffers. Both of you are summer people who can’t get warm enough.

Even if you snuggle up and drink tea, hot chocolate, and candles, it won’t help. Every new rainy day is a test of endurance for you and your loved one, and the only way to escape is to flee from autumn.

As a sustainable traveler, you will likely struggle with your conscience if you are drawn south in the fall. If you can’t take three months off for the trip, most destinations can only be reached by plane. For a week or two, flying to Thailand? That is absolutely not sustainable. Then it should already be three or four weeks that you and your favorite person spend in the country. By the way, this applies to all air travel 😉  You don’t have so much time, but you still want to get some sun? That is also possible closer. There are some destinations in Southern Europe that offer pleasant temperatures and sunshine even in autumn. It is easy to reach by train, and it takes a short time.

Whether you’re looking for an annual vacation, a week-long break, or a short trip, we’ll show you where you can stay romantically and sustainably. Far away from foggy gray and dirty weather.

Far away: Romantic vacation in the Seychelles or Thailand

White beaches, palm trees in the wind and sunsets that conjure up incredible colors in the sky. There’s hardly a better place to forget the gray, Central European autumn than a tropical beach or a villa wonderland in the middle of the jungle.

Sustainable romantic vacation in Thailand

You will find both in the popular Southeast Asian country that is beloved by tourists. Many people don’t know it’s a sustainable destination. Do you? With the Keemala, the Zeavola and The Tongsai Bay, we can introduce you to three sustainable and luxuriously romantic hotels.

At Zeavola, minimalist luxury awaits. In the private suites surrounded by tropical trees, you can completely relax with your loved one. The bungalows are very open-plan and modeled after traditional Thai architecture. You really live in the middle of nature. If you want to get pampered from front to back, then stroll along the beach and listen to the numerous bird calls. There is a romantic sunset cruise offered by Zeavola. Enjoy a whole day of relaxation at the resort, including a private candlelight dinner on the beach in the evening. Snorkel in the crystal clear waters, and let yourself be whisked away to paradise.

At Keemala, you’ll move into your very own villa with pool. The villas differ in architecture and appearance, depending on which ‘tribe’ you join. All of them, however, have one thing in common: they blend into the surrounding jungle almost seamlessly. It’s as if they were part of the jungle themselves. The Mala Spa offers couples treatments, and in the evening you can ring in the evening on your candlelit terrace. As a romantic stopover on a longer Thailand trip, Keemala is an absolute highlight. And it creates just the right atmosphere for special moments.

Sun, beach and romance in the Seychelles

As a loyal reader of the blog, you might be familiar with Cerf Island Resort. As a wedding destination. But not only for this special event and the subsequent honeymoon, the Seychelles and the sustainable resort are a top tip, but also to escape the autumn and spend time with your loved one.

Discover the breathtaking underwater world together while snorkeling or diving. You can also explore the National Marine Park at the gates of the resort with a kayak tour. And if you paddle into the sunset, there is also a pinch of romance 😉 If a pinch isn’t enough, you’ll get your money’s worth with a romantic dinner on the beach.

Are you aware that almost half of the Seychelles consists of national or nature parks? Thus, the untouched nature is one of the major attractions of this country. Nature has been protected for decades. CERF is also committed to environmental protection and to the community and culture of the Seychelles. For this reason, 95 percent of the companies profits are donated to local charities

Close by: Romantic hotels in Italy

Thailand and the Seychelles are too far away for you? You would rather not fly? You only have a few days or a week, but still want to get out of the autumnal gray? Then book a train ticket to Italy and discover the beauty of the country, away from the hustle and bustle of the summer months.

Unwind in Liguria

Even in the summer, you won’t get super hectic in the small town of Borgomaro. You’ll get to enjoy the authentic Ligurian village life even more in the fall. The Relais del Maro is a great place to stay. This property is a so-called Albergo Diffuso, which means it is spread over several buildings in the village.

During hikes through the beautiful hinterland, you can completely relax and forget the daily routine. The pleasant temperatures invite you to swim in one of the natural pools and cool off. Finally, dusk conjures up a romantic atmosphere throughout the town, so you don’t have to do anything but stroll hand in hand through the streets.

Tradition meets luxury and romance

The region of Friuli lies between Slovenia and Italy. This region of Italy is perfect for active travelers. If you are interested in hiking or biking, the area is full of ranges of hills and vineyards. Take your bicycles with you and plan extensive tours, especially if you have more than one of them. You will find small trattorias everywhere where you can stop for a bite to eat.

At La Subida Relais you can expect a mixture of tradition and modernity. The hotel impresses with lots of wood and attention to detail. Luxury is emphasized throughout, based on the design of traditional estates. The property has a rustic feel, and guests can enjoy a glass of wine at sunset with views of the forest surrounding the property. Romantic travelers will feel right at home here, and hey, haven’t you always dreamed of spending the night in a four-poster bed in the hayloft?

Romantic vacation in the south of Italy

In the Cilento National Park in the very south of Italy, there is exceptional accommodation. You will stay in lovingly restored stables, warehouses, or bakeries at the estate A Cràpa Mangia. Each apartment has its terrace, from which you can watch the sunset over the sea with your loved one. You can enjoy wine, homemade pasta and a lot of romance.

By the way, the team of A’ Cràpa Mangia has a special offer for couples. Not only will you be picked up from Naples, but a bottle of local wine and a prepared fireplace will be waiting for you upon your arrival. There are several tour suggestions for a hike (or you can just sit comfortably in front of the fireplace) in the morning and in the evening, you can look forward to a three-course Cilentian menu at a local restaurant. If that doesn’t create a romantic mood …

Have you already planned your “autumn escape”?

Vacationing far away, and sustainably? Is that even possible? If you are enervated by always hearing the same comments, we have good news for you: Yes, it is! And we’ll give you a few examples of how.

Generally speaking, hotels have various options for being more sustainable. For example, the hotel management is committed to an environmentally friendly policy. Or, the hotel is particularly interested in providing vacationers with authentic insights into the host country. And finally, wages are fair, employees are trained which improves the economic situation of the people.

To provide more details, we’ve picked out three sustainable hotels from our portfolio where you can go on a sustainable vacation.

Barefoot vacations in the Maldives

For example, the eco-luxury resort Gili Lankanfushi on the private island of Lankanfushi. The luxury hotel is located about six nautical miles from Malé in the North Malé Atoll in the Maldives. The 45 villas built in the lagoon above the sea are accessible via jetties — and guarantee a vacation experience beyond compare. The team of the Gili will spoil you with fresh seafood from the region, as well as vegetables and herbs from their own organic garden. On the menu? Traditional Maldivian plant-based cuisine.

At Gili Lankanfushi, you’ll get exclusive insights into the local underwater world. The resort’s own marine biologists will take you on diving and snorkeling tours.

Special attention is given to the coral reefs, which are supported by the Coral Lines project. With the Gilis Seas program, the resort has set sustainability guidelines to protect the environment and its social responsibility as an employer.

Almost all employees are locals who are specially trained. Whenever possible, local and fair-trade products are sourced to keep transportation short and support the local community. Suppliers are only chosen if they pay their employees appropriately and offer good working conditions. There is a free ferry to Malé and Himmafushi for resort employees. The hotel is also involved in the Himmafushi school and pays the salary of the English teacher there.

Paradise experiences on a tiny Seychelles island

A few nautical miles away on the Seychelles, you’ll find Cerf Island Resort, with its 24 luxurious villas. The boutique hotel is just a ten-minute boat ride from the main island of Mahé at the entrance to Saint Anne Marine Park, a nature reserve.

Cerf Island is only about one and a half kilometers long and about one kilometer wide. Are you on your honeymoon or newly in love? Then the resort is a good choice for you. A visit to one of the restaurants is an unforgettable experience, not only for romantics. Directly on the beach, with a view of the sea and the setting sun, you will be served delicious, local and seasonal organic food as well as fair trade products fresh from the market.

If you want to pamper yourself a bit more, you should visit the nature spa at Cerf Island Resort. Or strap on your flippers and explore the impressive underwater world. One of the best diving spots in the area is Brissaire Rock: Around the rock you can observe reef sharks, rays, and whale sharks with a little luck.

Tongsai Bay

Family-run eco hotel on Koh Samui

Nestled in unspoiled nature, the family-run boutique hotel Tongsai Bay on the Thai island of Koh Samui also promises you a special and sustainable vacation — and has been doing so since 1985. This was when the hotel’s founder Khun Akorn Hoontrakul realized his vision of a sustainably managed vacation resort.

His goal was to build an accommodation harmonizing with nature. Insecticides and chemical fertilizers are strictly forbidden, and to date, no trees have been felled for the resort. Plastic is also banned throughout the house. Straws made from lemongrass are used as an alternative to plastic straws. Organic waste is used as fertilizer, and garbage is separated.

The hotel staff make the cleaning agent for the bathrooms themselves — from fermented pineapple peel. And the dregs of coffee are used for exfoliation in the hotel’s spa. Many employees have been working there for more than 30 years; 95 percent of the team is Thai. There is regular training and continuing education.

During the corona-induced lockdown, employees received free meals, and in some cases, salaries were continued to be paid. The eco-hotel is also involved in various social projects and supports, for example, the local animal shelter, schools, temple projects and “Sisters of Samui”. In this project, more than 1,000 homeless people are provided with food every day.

So, next time someone indicates to you that there is no such thing as a sustainable long- haul vacation, send them to these wonderful places and they will be proved wrong!
