There are places that seem straight out of a fairy tale—and hotels that capture that essence and bring it to life. One such place is Hotel Das Rübezahl in the Allgäu region; ideal for anyone longing for a romantic getaway. Located directly opposite Neuschwanstein Castle, the hotel features enchanting hideaways, lovingly designed suites, and hosts who have a fairy-tale love story of their own. Here, everything revolves around togetherness—sustainable, personalized, and emotional.

A romantic vacation in Bavaria: Where a magical picnic in the forest appears

Imagine hiking through the Allgäu countryside, the mountains glistening in the distance, and Neuschwanstein Castle peeking through the treetops, and then suddenly you come upon an enchanted forest clearing with a picnic laid out lovingly in view of the fairytale castle. There’s freshly baked bread, regional organic specialties, and a sparkling drink. And no one else is in sight. As if it were prepared by magic.

The fairies and elves of the family-run Hotel Das Rübezahl were at work here. Secretly, quietly, and with a sense of the extraordinary. They arranged everything and waited patiently for your arrival. Now, they retreat and leave you alone with a view of the royal castles and the silence of the forest. You have the feeling that a new chapter in your love story is being written here.

This is what a romantic getaway feels like, one that only the boutique hotel Das Rübezahl can offer: magical, personal, and with genuine dedication.

Movie magic in real life!

Here, romance isn’t just in your head; it’s a reality, as you’ll experience during a candlelight dinner in the cozy Zirbenstube, which you can book as a special highlight. There, you’ll enjoy an exclusive five-course menu in a warm atmosphere fragrant with pine and full of togetherness.

When you return to your room later, you’ll find that something else has changed. A heart made of rose petals will be on the bed. The curtains will be slightly drawn, revealing a view of the castle. The romantic spirits of the house have been at work again.

Whether you stay in the Ludwig’s Dream suite, which features a king-size box spring bed and a bioethanol fireplace, or the Sissi’s Dream suite, which features a whirlpool and an effect fireplace. Oak wood, velvet fabrics, and castle views set the tone for a royal getaway. Every room at Das Rübezahl is a declaration of love—to you, to grand emotions, and to the region and its history.

Romance that comes from the soul—not a marketing book

Sure, many hotels claim to be ideal for romantic getaways. After all, couples are a classic target group — a candlelit dinner here, a rose-covered heart there. But once you’ve stayed at Hotel Das Rübezahl, you’ll immediately sense that it’s different. Everything here feels authentic. Because it is.

Familie Thurm vom Hotel Das Rübezahl
Erhard, Guiselle und Alexander Thurm sind deine Gastgeber. ©Hotel Das Rübezahl

This is thanks to the Thurm family, who run the boutique hotel with passion. Giselle, affectionately known in the family as the “Ice Princess from Rio de Janeiro,” leads the way. The 1984/85 Brazilian figure skating champion came to the Allgäu region to train and worked as a waitress at Das Rübezahl to earn money. There, she was spotted by the young chef, Erhard Thurm, who won her over after “weeks of courtship.”

With sensitivity, style, and a passion for fairy-tale details, the couple transformed Das Rübezahl into a place that evokes longing for lovers. Today, their son, Alexander Thurm, is carrying the hotel into the next generation with just as much heart as his parents.

Sustainable romantic getaways — because love also means taking responsibility

Romance means thinking about others. But it goes even further: it also means thinking about tomorrow. Couples who make time for each other on vacation often realize what truly matters. And that includes treating the world we love with care.

At Hotel Das Rübezahl, sustainability is the natural companion of romance. The food ingredients come from the surrounding area, and many of them are organic. Ninety percent of the electricity is produced in-house by a combined heat and power plant and solar panels, and the rest is green electricity. If you opt out of having your room cleaned, a tree will be planted. When you book, you can offset your CO2 emissions, and you are asked to bring your own slippers for the wellness area.

Relax with wellness and nature

The Hotel Das Rübezahl in the Allgäu region has a natural swimming pond.

The wellness area features several saunas, a year-round heated outdoor pool, and a 2,500-square-meter wellness garden with a natural swimming pond. There is also a fire pit and a stunning view of the mountains and Neuschwanstein Castle. Guests can enjoy nature on hikes, either alone or with the hiking concierge and guide, Bergbaschdi. Additionally, the hotel rents bicycles and snowshoes in the winter.

The hotel offers five packages tailored for couples. Options range from the “Say Yes Package” and “Couples Pampering Package,” which include massages and spa treatments, to the “Culinary Pleasure” culinary package.

A story of longing and connection

Incidentally, Giselle and Erhard didn’t grow up loving fairy tales; they developed a fondness for them over time. Erhard’s parents, Hildegard and Herbert Thurm, hailed from the Giant Mountains. After fleeing, they worked hard to build a new life for themselves in the Allgäu region. They named their hotel “Das Rübezahl” after a mythical figure from their homeland. Their story is full of longing, transformation, and fantasy.

At the Hotel Das Rübezahl, you are surrounded by this magic and the history of the hotel, its owners, and its setting among the fairy-tale castles of Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein. It is a place where togetherness feels special and memories are made that last a lifetime.

Between rugged rock formations and tranquil alpine meadows, the Dolomites invite you to experience nature with all your senses – and to preserve it. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, they are not only a spectacular destination, but also a place for sustainable discovery and a true slow travel experience. In this Green Travel Guide to the Dolomites, you will discover sustainable accommodations, culinary highlights, and the most beautiful destinations for your next vacation.

The special character of the Dolomites

The Dolomites are part of the Alps and are a unique mountain range in northern Italy. They stretch across South Tyrol, Trentino and the province of Belluno. Characteristic of the mountain range are the rugged rock formations, often shimmering in shades of light gray to pink. They consist of dolomite, a special form of limestone.

Some of the peaks reach over 3,000 meters. The highest peak is the Marmolada at 3,343 meters. There are several mountain ranges in the Dolomites, the most famous of which are the Geisler Group, the Sciliar, the Rosengarten, the Sella Group and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

In addition to its impressive scenery, the region showcases rich cultural diversity. Here, Ladin, German, and Italian traditions come together, offering not only spectacular views but also an alpine environment where nature and culture blend closely.

A responsible destination

Since 2009, the Dolomites have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a distinction that recognizes their geological and landscape uniqueness. A total of nine sub-areas have been included, covering an area of approximately 142,000 hectares.

UNESCO highlights the geological importance of the Dolomites and the exceptional beauty of the mountain landscape. The sharp contrasts between steep rock faces, green pastures and deep valleys make the region an outstanding example of alpine nature.

Inclusion on the World Heritage List brings with it not only recognition, but also responsibility: the aim is to protect the fragile landscape for the long term and to develop it sustainably – in harmony with nature, culture and tourism.

Nature in transition – Endangered diversity in the Dolomites

The Dolomites are a fragile ecosystem under increasing pressure. Climate change is leaving its mark: glaciers are melting rapidly, changing the landscape and threatening the habitats of specialized plants and animals. Species that depend on the cool conditions of high mountain regions are particularly affected. For example, alpine plants such as glacier buttercup and certain species of saxifrage are endangered because their habitats are shrinking as a result of warming.

Insect decline in South Tyrol

The Seiser Alm is an important habitat for many animals. ©Paradiso Pure.Living Vegan Hotel

The animal world is also facing challenges. Invertebrates are the most affected. The Red List of South Tyrol documents the threats to locusts, dragonflies, butterflies, beetles and other small animals. According to a publication by the South Tyrol Museum of Nature, for example, “427 species are considered lost”.

Now, these animals don’t have as big a lobby as, say, the cute marmot, which was once on the verge of extinction, but has since bounced back thanks to conservation efforts. As we documented in our blog about the importance of insect decline, insects are at the bottom of the food pyramid. If they disappear, the whole pyramid collapses!

If you want to get involved in conservation during your vacation, join events like planting campaigns organized by the following conservation groups.

Tourism caught between conflicting priorities – The economy and the environment

Tourism is an important economic factor for the Dolomites, but it also brings problems. Popular destinations such as the Val di Braies and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo experience a veritable rush of visitors during the summer months, leading to overcrowded paths, traffic problems, increased litter and pressure on natural resources.

Reinhold Messner, the famous South Tyrolean mountaineer, is very critical of this development. In a guest article in the WELT, he did not mince his words: “The Alps as a fun park is a mistake”. He warns that commercialization and mass tourism could destroy the unique mountain landscape.

“On a mountain vacation, everyone wants what they demand in their urban environment: infrastructure, comfort, safety. (…) It is this consumerist attitude that does not fit in the mountains.” – Reinhold Messer

He has also called for the introduction of an entrance fee for the Dolomites and for various measures to reduce traffic congestion and make tourism more environmentally friendly (e.g. car-free).

A recent example of the threat to sensitive natural areas is the construction of a bobsleigh track in Cortina d’Ampezzo for the 2026 Winter Olympics. Although located in a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this project plans to clear valuable habitats, some of which shelter endangered species. It is a project that illustrates how economic interests and large events put pressure on conservation.

Eco-friendly mobility – the Dolomites without cars

Good news: South Tyrol sets an example for public transportation in Italy. If you want to reach this impressive mountain world without a car, you can take the train or a long-distance bus. Once there, you can also get around by public transport, bike or on foot.

Arrival by train and coach

There are international train connections to Bolzano, Bressanone, Chiusa, Fortezza and Trento. From there you can continue by public transport (see information on guest cards below). Hotels and sustainable accommodation usually offer a shuttle service.

Another cheap and sustainable option is the long-distance coach. FlixBus, for example, offers direct connections to South Tyrol, with stops in Bolzano, Bressanone, Chiusa, Vipiteno, Merano, Lana and Marlengo. Many accommodations are easily accessible from these stops, for example via the “Südtirol Transfer“, which offers a shuttle service to many vacation accommodations.

For more information on new train connections in Italy and how they contribute to sustainable travel, see my article: Italy by Rail – New trains from 2024 to promote sustainable travel.

Guest Cards: Local sustainable mobility

The good news: 90 percent of all accommodations in South Tyrol offer you the South Tyrol Guest Pass or a regional alternative free of charge. With the Guest Pass you can use all buses and trains for free. And that’s not all: many cable cars are also part of the public transport system! 🙂

In addition to the South Tyrol Guest Pass, there is the Val Gardena Guest Pass in Val Gardena, the DolomitiMobil Card in Villnöss, and the Dolomites Active Card for East Tyrol (Austria). These cards are usually included in the price of your room and encourage environmentally friendly transportation during your stay.

Tip: Ask your accommodation provider if you can have the guest card sent to you by the hotel before you arrive, or if they can provide you with login details for an e-version. This will allow you to use the card as soon as you arrive.

Sustainable accommodation in the Dolomites

The Dolomites offer a range of sustainably managed hotels and apartments. Two very special ones are part of the Green PearlsⓇ network.

Paradiso Pure.Living Vegan Hotel: Art Hotel on the Seiser Alm

The Paradiso Pure.Living Vegan Hotel is not a hotel like any other, but an avant-garde art hotel with an artists’ circle, ongoing contemporary art exhibitions, and 100% vegan cuisine under the direction of Chef Aggeliki Charami (“the rock star of vegan cuisine”).

The hotel is located on the famous Seiser Alm, Europe’s largest high alpine pasture at over 2000 meters. It offers a combination of natural luxury, plant-based cuisine and a holistic sustainability concept. In addition to close proximity to nature and vegan gourmet cuisine, you can enjoy exclusive spa and yoga facilities. Plus, the ski slopes and hiking trails are right outside your door! The hotel is committed to minimizing its environmental footprint and promoting a conscious lifestyle in harmony with nature.

My Arbor – Tree hotel near Brixen on the Plose

Closer to city life is the adults-only hotel My Arbor. Located 15 minutes by car from Brixen, it is a tree hotel built on stilts that blends harmoniously into the forests of the Plose. Its architecture gives you the feeling of living in the treetops, allowing you to combine urban culture with relaxation in nature. The hotel offers modern suites with panoramic views, a spacious spa with indoor and outdoor areas, and a cuisine that uses regional and seasonal products. The proximity of the Plose cable car allows you to reach hiking and skiing areas without a car.

Sustainable enjoyment in the Dolomites – selected restaurants and refuges

The Dolomites offer not only breathtaking scenery, but also culinary experiences that focus on sustainability and local produce.

OMNIA – Vegetarian gourmet cuisine on the Alpe di Siusi

OMNIA, part of the Paradiso Pure.Living Vegan Hotel, is open to external guests and is a pioneer of vegan cuisine in the Dolomites. The extraordinary restaurant seats only 10 people and offers a 9-course menu for everyone, personally presented by Chef Aggeliki Charami and her team.

Here, Alpine, Mediterranean and Asian flavors merge to create creative, plant-based dishes of the highest quality. Ingredients are primarily sourced from organic farms and the local region, minimizing the environmental footprint.

Profanter Naturbäckerei – Traditional craftsmanship in Brixen

At the Profanter Naturbäckerei, bread is baked with passion and respect for the environment. They only use heirloom grains that are ground in the bakery’s own stone mill without any additives. The bakery in Brixen supplies the Hotel My Arbor, among others, and relies on regional organic ingredients and renewable energy sources in its production.

Here on the blog I interviewed Benjamin Profanter about sustainable bread.

Other sustainable places to enjoy good food

  • AlpINN: Located in Bruneck in the Puster Valley in the Dolomites, this is the restaurant of 3-star chef Norbert Niederkofler. Known for his “Cook the Mountain” concept, he creates dishes using local, seasonal ingredients. His longtime sous chef, Berni Aichner, is now head chef at our Green PearlsⓇ partner OLM Nature Escape. An energy self-sufficient aparthotel in Sand in Taufers. Also in South Tyrol, but not in the Dolomites. Berni Aichner regularly hosts cooking events there – most recently together with Reinhold Messner.
  • Huber Schwaige: “The Huber Schweige hut on the Seiser Alm advertises itself as “home-style cooking straight from the farm”. This traditional alpine hut offers a magnificent view of the Dolomites while serving South Tyrolean specialties.
  • Rifugio Scotoni: This mountain hut has been run by the same family for over 50 years and is known for its authentic cuisine and the use of local ingredients. It is located in the Fanes Group and is an ideal place to stop during a hike..
  • Ütia de Börz: Another mountain hut known for its use of local ingredients. Located at the foot of the Peitlerkofel at an altitude of over 2,000 meters, this hut offers traditional Ladin dishes and is committed to the conscious use of resources.

Experience nature with respect – sustainable activities and highlights in the Dolomites

When you travel in the Dolomites, you quickly realize that the mountains aren’t just for rushing through, but for taking the time to stop and appreciate them. Whether you’re on a panoramic hike, watching the sun rise quietly from the summit, or on a guided wildlife tour, sustainable experiences and slow travel are the order of the day.

#1 Nature Parks

A highlight are the nature parks, such as the Schlern-Rosengarten Nature Park or the Puez-Geisler Nature Park. They offer well-marked trails, information centers, and guided tours with rangers who provide an in-depth look at alpine flora and fauna.

#2 Mountain Sports

If you prefer something more athletic, you can opt for gentle mountain sports such as rock climbing, biking (on the trails!!!) or ski touring – ideally with certified guides and without motorized assistance if possible.

#3 Wildlife and bird watching

Sunrise game viewing or bird watching are also wonderful ways to connect with nature and learn firsthand that this earth is also inhabited by other creatures that need its habitat! This is best done with local guides and rangers.

The typical wild animals in the Dolomites are:

  • Chamois
  • Ibex
  • Marmot
  • Red Deer
  • Roe Deer
  • Foxes
  • Snow Hare

Special bird species:

  • Golden Eagle
  • Alpine Chough
  • Black Grouse and Capercaillie (rare, but if you are lucky you may see them)
  • Eagle Owl
  • Tawny Owl
  • Spotted Nutcracker
  • Wallcreeper
  • Ring Ouzell

#4 Herbal walks and themed trails

Herbal walks with local experts are a popular way to combine nature and culture. Many regions also offer themed trails, such as the Zans Nature Experience Trail in the Villnöss Valley, which teach knowledge in a playful way.

#5 Skiing

Vegan Skiing Vacation in the Dolomites, South Tyrol

Skiing, at least downhill skiing, isn’t exactly what you’d call slow travel. But since the famous Dolomiti Superski ski area is located here, we wanted to mention it. Dolomiti Superski is one of the largest ski resorts in the Alps. It connects 12 individual ski resorts and about 1,200 kilometers of slopes. Thanks to its location in the middle of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a lot is being done here to promote sustainability. (That doesn’t mean there aren’t any snow cannons, though). That’s why we’ve put together 7 tips for a sustainable ski vacation, which you can also apply to a winter vacation in the Dolomites.

Small acts, big effects – your contribution to sustainable travel

We don’t need to tell you again that sustainable tourism depends not only on what is offered, but also on your own behavior. But we’ll tell you anyway 🙂

Besides the usual tips (bring your own water bottle, use public transport, etc.), it’s especially important in the Dolomites to stay on the marked trails to protect the fragile vegetation!

When observing wild animals, keep a safe distance. Do not frighten the animals, do not take pictures with flash or feed them! Tours with local guides are ideal. They know how to behave in nature and around wild animals. They can also tell you a lot of interesting facts. They also know the animals’ favorite places, so you’re more likely to see the rarer inhabitants of the Dolomites.

Tip: Perhaps you may take advantage of your vacation in the Dolomites to try a new way of life, such as a plant-based diet. The hosts of the Paradiso Pure.Living Vegan Hotel report in an interview that many of their guests do not live a vegan lifestyle at home, but are curious and open to trying a plant-based diet while staying with them. Who knows – you might discover some new favorite dishes.

Conscious, relaxed, and inspiring

The Dolomites are a unique natural and cultural heritage that inspires awe and reflection. Between vegan gourmet cuisine, gentle adventures, and alpine mindfulness, modern tourism can and must work in harmony with nature.

Short trips are easier to fit into your schedule than long vacations – and they tend to be cheaper, too. According to surveys and studies, Gen Z and Millennials in particular appreciate both. A microcation often focuses on exceptional experiences, such as a spa weekend at a unique hotel, a city break, a short outdoor adventure or special tours. Because of the shorter travel distances, a microcation also benefits sustainable tourism.

Sustainable microcations – what to look for

A microcation (a portmanteau of “micro” and “vacation”) is one to four nights.

1.   How long is the travel time for a microcation?

A good rule of thumb is to allow 2 hours travel time. This distance will allow you to make a stress-free trip after work or early in the morning without much planning. 4 hours is acceptable if it is a comfortable train ride or an extremely worthwhile destination 🙂 Anything longer than 4 hours should only be done by night train or planned as a bike trip (keyword: the journey is the reward).

The ideas in this article are meant to inspire your next microcation. You can and should customize these ideas based on where you are and what transportation is available!

2. Choosing the right accommodation is essential – regardless of whether you are staying for a short or long period of time

A short trip (without a plane) is not the only thing that makes a microcation sustainable. As with longer vacations, your choice of accommodation also plays an important role. Sustainable Green PearlsⓇ hotels and vacation rentals rely on renewable energy, local organic food, and eco-friendly concepts such as zero waste or circular design.

3. Traveling sustainable means living sustainable

It also means making sure you use resources consciously:

  • Less luggage means less emissions
  • Visit local restaurants and shops instead of international chains and support the local community.
  • Activities can also be sustainable – from nature experiences to eco-friendly city tours to sustainable spa options.
  • For more tips on sustainable travel, check out this overview.

Microcation ideas for every taste

Whether you are looking for relaxation, new adventures, or a digital break – Here are sustainable inspirations for your next microcation:

#1 Wellness & Relaxation

Perfect for giving your body and mind a break. Sustainable wellness hotels rely on natural skin care products, environmentally friendly wellness areas (e.g. natural swimming ponds), green energy from renewable sources and advanced technology (e.g. use of waste heat). Complemented by healthy and regional (organic) cuisine.

Sustainable hotel tips:

  • Birkenhof**** Spa & Genussresort (Upper Palatinate, Germany): Just want to relax and enjoy? The Birkenhof is a 5-star wellness hotel with a large natural swimming pond, several pools (indoor and outdoor) and a large sauna area. It also has a 2-star restaurant. Despite all this luxury, the hotel is fully committed to sustainability and operates its own combined heat and power plant, which significantly reduces CO2 emissions for electricity and heating.
  • Hotel Klosterbräu (Seefeld, Tyrol, Austria): The Hotel Klosterbräu is also a 5-star hotel with pools and saunas, surrounded by the beautiful mountain panorama of the Alps. Built on the site of an old monastery, the hotel has a special charm with its vaulted cellars and candlelight. You will have a particularly sustainable vacation in the hotel’s nature rooms. These rooms were built with almost 95% local materials (e.g. clay plastered walls and wooden floors from the hotel’s own forest).
  • SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA (Bad Herrenalb, Black Forest, Germany): Located in the climatic health resort of Bad Herrenalb, this hotel not only offers breathtaking views of the Black Forest, but also has its own mineral thermal swimming pool. It is known for its sustainable initiatives, such as hotel rooms made entirely of recyclable materials.

#2 Inner peace and strength

Yoga at LA VIMEA © Biotique Hotel LA VIMEA
Every day Yoga at the sun deck © LA VIMEA

If swimming, sauna and relaxation are not enough for you and you are looking for something more spiritual, you can combine your microcation with guided yoga and meditation classes, forest bathing or TCM treatments.

Suitable sustainable hotels:

  • LA VIMEA (Naturno, South Tyrol, Italy): Daily morning and evening yoga on the sun deck, a natural swimming pond, a saltwater pool, and 100% vegan cuisine -that’s what adults-only hotel LA VIMEA has to offer. The hotel also appeals to younger guests with its vegan focus and a special offer for Gen Z.
  • Lifestyle Resort Zum Kurfürsten (Bernkastel-Kues, Mosel, Germany): Located in the Moselle region, the Lifestyle Resort is completely designed according to Feng Shui and includes a TCM center for Far Eastern treatments. You can also incorporate these into your microcation, for example with a nutritional consultation and diet based on the 5 elements.
  • Klosterhof – Alpine Hideaway & Spa (Bayerisch Gmain, Berchtesgaden, Germany): Forest bathing (shinrin yoku) from Japan is said to be extremely healthy and healing. You can try it under professional guidance at Klosterhof – Alpine Hideaway & Spa. (Read more about forest bathing in our blog article). The hotel also offers singing bowl massages.
  • Naturresort Gerbehof (Friedrichshafen, Lake Constance, Germany): If you are open to alternative healing methods such as biomotivation according to Viktor Philippi, you will find it at the Naturresort Gerbehof on Lake Constance.

#3 Adventure & Outdoors

A weekend in the mountains or on the coast – microadventures are a great way to combine sustainable travel with nature experiences. Whether hiking, biking or wildlife watching, the focus is on conscious experiences.

Recommended accommodation:

  • Hotel Bella Vista Zermatt (Switzerland): A family-run boutique hotel with just 21 rooms and direct views of the Matterhorn. Located in the car-free mountain village of Zermatt, it is the perfect starting point for a short nature vacation including hiking.
  • Summit Lodges Pfunds (Tyrol, Austria): If you are not traveling alone on your microcation, but rather with friends or family, the Summit Lodges are two first-class vacation homes that can accommodate up to 6 people. The log cabins have their own wood-burning fireplaces, saunas, and are surrounded by Tyrolean nature. In addition to hiking, you can go windsurfing on Lake Reschen in the summer.
  • Naturhotel Outside (East Tyrol, Austria): Naturhotel Outside is located in the middle of the Hohe Tauern National Park – Austria’s largest alpine national park – around the Grossglockner and other 3,000-meter peaks. The eco-friendly hotel has a top-notch restaurant (3 Falstaff Forks) and in-house hiking guides. Microcation Tip: Look for the “Big Five” of the Alps (ibex, golden eagle, bearded vulture, chamois and marmot).

New content on your Instagram and TikTok accounts is the LAST thing you want on your mini-break? Then you might prefer the opposite: a digital detox. A few days without constant connectivity can work wonders. Conscious relaxation and offline activities will help you clear your head.

Tips for sustainable hotels:

  • STURM (Mellrichstadt, Rhön, Germany): The redesigned (and award-winning) garden-view rooms deliberately forgo televisions. Instead, they overlook a large natural swimming pond. The Rhön Biosphere Reserve, with its rolling hills and exciting moors, is perfect for a relaxing vacation.
  • Hotel Okelmann’s: (Warpe, Lower Saxony, Germany): We recently featured Warpe as a “hidden gem” on this blog. Here you can experience pure nature in a traditional family hotel with a barrel sauna and yoga classes. It’s the perfect place to unwind for a few days.
  • Gut Sonnenhausen (Glonn, Bavaria, Germany): About an hour’s drive south of Munich, you’ll find Gut Sonnenhausen, surrounded by forest and farmland (managed according to the principles of permaculture). The renovated and restored former stud farm offers a relaxed atmosphere of eco-consciousness, tranquility and inspiring art.

Rekindeling the spark in your relationship with a vacation is very popular. A microcation, where you spend some quality time together, is often all that is needed. With the right setting and accommodation, the rest will take care of itself.

Our hotel recommendations for a romantic getaway:

  • Hotel Das Rübezahl (Füssen, Allgäu, Germany): Nestled among Germany’s royal castles, a forest, and a view of Neuschwanstein Castle, the setting is nothing short of magical. Hotel Das Rübezahl features a beautiful natural spa in front of the hotel, many romantic nooks and crannies, and top-notch cuisine by Erik Wendt.
  • Lifestylehotel SAND (Timmendorfer Strand, Baltic Sea, Germany): The Lifestylehotel SAND, located directly on the Baltic Sea, offers romantic extras like the possibility to spend the night in a wicker beach chair on the roof of the hotel. You can read more about this in our blog post about a romantic weekend by the Baltic Sea.

Are you drawn to the city? The hustle and bustle, the crowds, the museums, the cafes, the shops… The advantage of a city break is that you can usually get to your destination by train, bus or carpool in an environmentally friendly and affordable way. In the cities themselves, there is public transportation – or you can take your bike. Did you know that Paris, for example, has expanded its network of bike paths and is now a great place to explore by bike?

Hotel tips for a city trip:

  • Green Spirit Hotels (Paris, France): In the heart of the centrally located 7th arrondissement, you will find three green pearls: Hotel Le Pavillon, Hotel Malar & Hotel Amelie. Hidden oases with green courtyards and organic food within walking distance of the Seine, the Eiffel Tower, the Invalides and other highlights. Read more about a stay at Hotel Le Pavillon and a guide to eco-dining in Paris here.
  • Hotel Milano Scala (Milan, Italy): Milan is not only the city of the Last Supper and Milan Fashion Week. It is also home to progressive contributions to sustainable urban development, a vegan scene, and the zero-emissions Hotel Milano Scala in the city center. In this article, we have compiled tips for a sustainable weekend in Milan.
  • Green City Hotel Vauban (Freiburg, Germany): The university city of Freiburg, near the French border, has a great atmosphere. Located in the modern Vauban district, the sustainably-run Green City Hotel Vauban offers direct access to the tram and a free ticket for public transportation. Our tip: Ideas for a sustainable and affordable weekend in Freiburg.
  • Hotel Luise (Erlangen, Germany): The Franconian university town of Erlangen, with its baroque cityscape, is an ideal destination for a “second city” visit (instead of Munich or Nuremberg). In this blog post, Laura Heufelder from Hotel Luise shares some insider tips for Erlangen.

Getting away from it all without having to fly halfway around the world is what makes Microcations so popular. We hope that we have given you some inspiring ideas. At the moment, the hotels mentioned are mainly from Germany. If you are looking for another region, check out the Green Pearls website.

Do you want to do more than just relax on vacation? Are you looking to harmonize your body and mind? Then staying at a sustainable hotel that offers Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) could be just the thing for you. This ancient art of healing combines natural medicine, nutrition, and exercise to promote inner balance – perfect if you feel stressed, have frequent aches and pains, digestive problems, or just want to improve your overall well-being.

What is TCM, exactly?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a collection of healing methods (from different eras) that originated in China. The most famous of these is acupuncture, which is now in widespread use throughout the world. Elements of Taoist philosophy and some perspectives that clearly contradict Western research have not been adopted in the “West”, but a reference to “Qi” as “life energy” has.

Sustainable wellness hotels with a TCM approach

At the following Green PearlsⓇ hotels, you can discover and try TCM and other healing methods. They all share a sustainable approach to human health and, more broadly, to the health of nature.

#1 Lifestyle Resort Zum Kurfürsten – TCM expertise on the Mosel

At the Lifestyle Resort Zum Kurfürsten, everything revolves around your health and relaxation – according to the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The hotel is fully committed to this healing method and offers a variety of treatments, from acupuncture and cupping to personalized nutrition and exercise programs.

Personalized and sustainable

This includes a nutritional plan based on the Five Elements (5 Element cuisine is also part of the hotel concept) and recommendations for appropriate exercises and treatments.

The wellness hotel on the Moselle River has several pools, a large natural swimming pond and a sauna world. The water flows in a cycle developed with a Feng Shui master from Beijing. The hotel itself is designed according to Feng Shui principles and is a confirmed place of power.

Qigong is an important part of TCM. It contains elements of martial arts – but with very slow and mindful movements.

Qigong stimulates the flow of qi, or life energy. External movement and internal stillness merge according to the principle of yin and yang.

At SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA you have the opportunity to book private lessons with Master Khim. He learned Qigong from Grand Master Prof. Li Shao Bo (Zhen-Qi Yun Xing Research Institute China) and is the only official representative of medical Qigong in Germany.

Why should you combine your vacation with TCM?

A vacation is the perfect opportunity to take care of yourself and balance your body and mind. In our busy lives, we often neglect to take the time to really listen to our needs, but this is the key to long-term wellness. According to the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, health is regained when inner harmony and balance are restored. This is what you can experience at a hotel specializing in TCM (or other healing modalities).

We hope that you have found the right place among the hotels presented here – for a break that will have an impact not only on your vacation, but also on your everyday life.

A miracle of the past, a place of longing of the present: Hotel Klosterbräu in the Tyrolean mountains combines history, luxury, sustainability and family. For me, the most fascinating thing about this hotel is the sense of well-being it exudes. Something you don’t find very often these days.

Once upon a time there was a miracle…

It all happened in what is now the village of Seefeld, Austria. In the 14th century, the feared robber baron Oswald Milser ruled here. He was notorious for robbing travelers of their money and imprisoning those who did not pay until they died without bread or water.

On Maundy Thursday in 1384, the tyrannical knight came to the parish church in Seefeld. During the Catholic ritual, he demanded the largest wafer for himself and refused to kneel. The floor gave way beneath him, pulling him down like quicksand. He screamed for help, but only when the priest removed the wafer from his mouth did the ground stabilize. Eyewitnesses also reported that the wafer turned red and dripped like blood.

The wicked knight then repented – and Seefeld became a place of pilgrimage. The “miracle wafer” has been considered a relic ever since, and the “pilgrimage to the Holy Blood” continued until the First World War. In order to accommodate the pilgrims, the monastery of the Augustinian monks living there was extended with a hostel for pilgrims. This is the cornerstone of the history of today’s hotel.

From monastery and brewery to 5-star wellness hotel

In 1809 the Augustinian monastery, which also had its own brewery, was abandoned (secularized and closed). Later it was auctioned and bought by the Seyrling family from Seefeld. This is the beginning of the story of the Seyrling family, who are now the 6th generation of owners of the hotel (the 7th generation can be found in the hotel’s children’s club).

Eight family members are involved in various aspects of the hotel. Regular guests appreciate the continuity and family feel. At Hotel Klosterbräu, you will always meet the owners personally and be greeted by the same faces each time you visit. This creates a very different atmosphere than at hotels with constantly changing staff. The Seyrlings don’t (just) have a job here, they have a home to which they invite you.

Alois and Agnes Seyrling are managers and hosts with a heart. Parents of two children (Margarita and Luis), they are the picture of perfection. Alois loves to interact with guests and tell stories during long evenings in the wine cellar. She is in charge of the children and family program and supervises the housekeeping.

Special features of the hotel

The Hotel Klosterbräu is a 5-star luxury hotel – but very different from the luxury complexes of international hotel chains.

History and modernity meet here. There are old vaulted cellars as well as modern suites. International cuisine and gastronomic trends are combined with traditional regional ingredients and dishes. The former monastery bell hangs above the heated outdoor pool (which, by the way, all guests swim around as if it were about to fall on their heads).

What else you will find:

  • In addition to the large outdoor pool with its beautiful sunbathing lawn and mountain panorama, the wellness area also includes an indoor pool and sauna area, the highlight of which is certainly the hand-carved wooden sauna.
  • The former brewery was reactivated in 2014, and since then the hotel has been brewing its own beer, which flows from a beer fountain in the spa area.
  • The hotel has its own vegetarian farm from which some of the food is sourced.
  • The hotel has its own petting zoo with dwarf ponies, goats, cows and rabbits – a highlight for children.
  • There is also a kids’ club for children and parents can also request a babysitting service.
  • The hotel has several restaurants and dining venues, including the Romeo and Juliet Balcony for romantic moments.
  • Guests can enjoy a wide range of activities, including guided hikes and yoga led by Laura Seyrling-Rieß.

Once you’re at Hotel Klosterbräu, you don’t really need anything else. The hotel is your vacation destination – maybe you’ll take a hike in the beautiful natural surroundings to enjoy the wellness and food even more afterwards.

Sustainable engagement

History of the hotels - Sustainably developed from an old monastery - the Hotel Klosterbräu in Tyrol Nachhaltiger Spa in Österreich

The world is still in order here. That’s what you experience as a guest. Fresh water comes from the faucet, healthy food from the region ends up on your plate. The Seyrlings are aware of these privileges and are socially and environmentally committed.

They rely on renewable energy and a modern energy-saving system from Siemens, promote e-mobility, and help their guests travel by train. The Seefeld ICE train station is only 3 minutes away from the hotel, and if you arrive by train, you can borrow an e-bike for free during your stay.

The Hotel Klosterbräu sets new standards with its nature rooms. The wood for the floors and furniture comes from the hotel’s own forest, and the walls are plastered with clay. Attention has also been paid to small details, such as lampshades made of hay flowers from a Tyrolean company.

For example, the hotel has a social commitment to Global Family, allowing people who have experienced serious illness, hardship, or violence to stay with them free of charge. (Read more about this in this article). The hotel also takes responsibility for its approximately 100 employees, organizing in-house training in the “Think-YOUNIQUE philosophy,” which teaches sustainable and ecological behavior.

Thanks to its sustainable efforts, the hotel is a member of Green PearlsⓇ and one of the few places in the world where you can travel sustainably.

Sound massage with Tibetan singing bowls is a wellness trend that is becoming increasingly popular in sustainable hotels that cater to mindful guests. You can find it in Green PearlsⓇ hotels around the world, including Nepal, Cambodia, Thailand, Italy, and Germany. Some offer it as part of their weekly program, others offer it as a spa treatment, and some even organize entire sound massage retreats. Here you can find out where you can add a sound massage to your next trip – and the benefits it can bring you.

Peace and relaxation through singing bowls

“The massages bring about a state of absolute relaxation that is unique. Even highly stressed people find peace within a short time.” That is how Maren Geisler-Okelmann of the Yoga-Hotel Okelmann’s in Warpe describes the effect of the singing bowls. The hostess is a trained yoga teacher and conducts sound therapy according to Peter HessⓇ in her courses and retreats. The Peter HessⓇ Institute is only 7 km from Warpe!

Singing bowl massage according to Peter HessⓇ

The singing bowl massage, which is a wellness trend in many places today, was developed by Peter Hess about 30 years ago. The German engineer for physical technology came into contact with singing bowls during his travels in Nepal.

According to the institute’s website, he “succeeded in adapting ancient Far Eastern knowledge from the Himalayas about sound and rhythm and their healing effects on body, mind, and soul to the needs of people in Western societies.”

It is not entirely clear how singing bowls were originally used. Some researchers even suggest that they were simply used as cooking utensils and that the tradition was “invented” later on. Others suggest that singing bowls once played an important role in Buddhism – but that the tradition has been lost.

The Peter HessⓇ Institute (PHI) now has 16 academies in 14 countries and claims to have trained approximately 10,000 people in the Peter Hess Sound Massage Method (protected in Europe).

How does a singing bowl massage work?

During a Peter HessⓇ singing bowl massage, several singing bowls are placed on the (clothed) body and sounded. The bowls, which are cast in brass or bronze, produce a gong-like sound with fine vibrations. These vibrations are transmitted to the body and are said to “release blockages” and lead to relaxation. Both physical (muscle relaxation) and mental. A singing bowl massage usually lasts between 30 and 90 minutes.

“Circling thoughts come to rest,” reports Maren vom Okelmann’s. One enters a “pleasant state in which one can let go.” The vibrations emanating from the singing bowls spread through the skin, tissues, bones, organs, and fluids of the body, creating a “gentle, internal massage.”

“Experiencing sound is a wonderful and healing thing.” – Maren Geisler-Okelmann

Difference between singing bowl massage and a sound bath

Sound bowl
©SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA

In some wellness and yoga hotels, you can have a sound bath in addition to a singing bowl massage. The difference is:

For a singing bowl massage, the bowls are placed on the body, while for a sound bath, the bowls are placed in the room.

A sound bath is especially suitable for groups. The vibrations of the gong are transferred from the bowl to the body.

At the Biohotel Grafenast in Tyrol, a sound bath in small groups is part of the weekly program, and you can also book a “singing bowl massage with Sabine” at any time. 60 minutes cost 85 Euro and 90 minutes 120 Euro.

At Biohotel Grafenast you can experience a great combination of a Tyrolean nature vacation with an Alpine panorama and Far Eastern relaxation methods. The family-run hotel and its surroundings have been designed according to Feng Shui as a place of power, and yoga and Qigong classes are also available.

As part of its in-house treatments, the HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio Allgäu offers both a sound bath and a sound massage. The cost for a 50-minute sound bath is 120 euros alone and 180 euros with another person.

The sustainable hotel in Balderschwang practices an “Ayurvedic lifestyle” – both in the wellness area and in the culinary arts. The sounds and vibrations of the singing bowls are considered to be energy that “can set every single cell in the body vibrating.” This is believed to have a healing effect.

Sound baths in the Italian ADLER Spa Resorts & Lodges weekly program

The sustainable and luxurious ADLER Spa Resorts & Lodges in Italy also believe in the benefits of sound baths and have made them an integral part of their wellness programs.

“At ADLER Spa Resort SICILIA, we offer the ‘Gong Sound’ experience every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday,” the team explains. “This treatment uses the slow, rhythmic beats of the gong, punctuated by brief moments of silence.”

At the ADLER Lodge Ritten* the Klangbad takes place every Wednesday and Saturday. The location on the Ritten plateau in South Tyrol is ideal for combining an active vacation in nature with wellness.

“You may find yourself taking a short but sweet nap during the sound treatments. The gentle sounds promote such a deep relaxation that a relaxed sleep is simply part of the experience, making it even more intense.” – ADLER Lodge RITTEN

Sound bath as an included service

The German hotel Das Rübezahl in the Allgäu region, like ADLER Spa Resorts & Lodges, offers sound baths as an included weekly program. In addition to the sound massage sessions, yoga and Qigong are also offered.

Meditation with singing bowls

Some Green PearlsⓇ hotels combine singing bowls with meditation. For example, the spa at CERVO Mountain Resort Zermatt in Switzerland offers a “singing bowl meditation” as part of its weekly yoga and meditation program. The sound bath helps calm the mind and release tension in the body. Guests leave feeling “more balanced and serene.”

My Arbor* near Brixen in South Tyrol offers both singing bowl massage and singing bowl meditation.

“It is a special form of relaxation that many of our guests love. They report feeling a deep sense of calm and lightness during the singing bowl treatment.” – Hotel My Arbor

What is the difference between a singing bowl massage and a singing bowl meditation?

The Keemala Resort on the island of Phuket in Thailand has answered this question. According to the resort, singing bowl massage is more about relaxing the muscles and stimulating circulation, while singing bowl meditation focuses on the mind. The goal of meditation is to achieve “mental clarity” through sounds and vibrations.

Sound Healing Retreats

If you want to delve deeper into the world of singing bowl healing, there are also a few retreats available. The Hotel Klosterhof – Alpine Hideaway & Spa hosted its first “Sound Healing Retreat” with Lisa Schuster, a physician and sound therapist from Munich. The three-night retreat included various sound baths, singing bowl massage, singing bowl meditation, toning exercises, yoga, and a cocoa ceremony.

At the Gut Sonnenhausen near Munich, Germany, singing bowls and cocoa ceremonies were also combined during the “Finding Peace Day Retreat” held in the fall of 2024. The retreat was led by Thails de la Paz, who works regularly with the Sonnenhausen Estate.

Sustainable wellness hotels with a Far Eastern touch

Singing Bowls Meditation Selfness

Yoga, mindfulness, TCM, Ayurveda, singing bowls – much of the modern Western lifestyle has its origins in East Asia. In addition to the Okelmann’s, Grafenast, and HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio hotels already mentioned, the Green PearlsⓇ hotels, which are sustainably and individually managed, include many others inspired by Far Eastern culture.

Stephan Bode, owner of the SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA in Bad Herrenalb, Germany, draws his personal strength from the words of Buddha and has integrated a Selfness Center into the hotel. Here, guests are offered mindfulness training, resilience, forest bathing, and fasting cures. Singing bowl massages are an optional extra.

Heiner Buckermann designed the entire Lifestyle Resort Zum Kurfürsten in Bernkastel-Kues on the Mosel River according to Feng Shui (with the help of a Chinese master). He also integrated a TCM center into the hotel. He places great importance on the 5 elements and wants the life energy Qi to flow freely throughout the hotel.

Among the treatments available at the TCM Center is a singing bowl massage based on the 5 elements.

“Based on the five elements of traditional Chinese medicine, the goal is to achieve a healing balance of the organs, which stimulates the organism to regenerate itself. By placing and striking the body with singing bowls of different sizes, (…) qi, blood and emotions can flow freely again.” – Lifestyle Resort Zum Kurfürsten

A 30-minute sound massage costs 47 euros.

Singing bowl massage in Nepal

The Himalayan region of Nepal is where Peter Hess was introduced to singing bowls and where the trend that is sweeping the West began. At the Pavilions Himalayas – The Farm you can experience the original Nepalese version of the singing bowl treatment.

The sustainably managed resort is known for its yoga classes with Yogi Shyam Gurung, who we featured in our Yoga for pros blog post. His retreats are not only about physical exercises but also about a theoretical, traditional understanding of yoga.

Sound bowls are used here in conjunction with meditation, Reiki, self-healing, and Ayurvedic treatments.

“We offer yoga, meditation, and sound bowl sessions either as individual sessions or in small groups that know each other well,” the resort says.

Singing bowl massage in Cambodia

In Cambodia, you can receive a singing bowl massage at the Farmhouse Smiling Gecko. Buddhism is the state religion and singing bowls have a long tradition in Buddhism. It is said that singing bowls existed at the time of the historical Buddha. However, little is known about their exact origin and original meaning.

At the luxurious Farmhouse Smiling Gecko Resort, you can experience the country authentically while supporting the Smiling Gecko Project. It supports the local population through training centers, a school, organic farming, and fair employment.

Sound bowl meditation and science

Finally, it is important to note that the effectiveness of a singing bowl massage is not scientifically proven and falls within the realm of alternative medicine. However, you may find that sometimes a beautiful sound is more pleasant than a long speech 🙂

A professional spa treatment at a wellness hotel is a luxury that many people indulge in on vacation. But you don’t always have the time or money to treat yourself. So here’s how you can relax at home with a sustainable DIY spa day and do something good for your skin and health. Including tips from the sustainable Green PearlsⓇ wellness hotels who shared their recipes with us.

Tips for a successful spa day at home

Before you begin your spa day, there are a few things you should be aware of and prepare for in order to get the most out of your spa experience:

  • Do all your chores (laundry, dishes, etc.) in advance so that nothing distracts you from your rest. If you can’t: close the kitchen door, put the laundry basket in a room you rarely enter, and give yourself permission to ignore these “chores. The laundry won’t get worse if you leave it until tomorrow.
  • Plan ahead and make sure you won’t be disturbed. Take a day off when the children are in school or daycare, tell your partner and/or roommates that you do not want to be disturbed.
  • Create a pleasant atmosphere with passive lighting and candles, and perhaps set the room temperature a little higher to make it more relaxing.
  • Make a cozy corner with pillows and blankets
  • Relax further with herbal tea and a good book

DIY instructions and recipes for face masks, body scrubs, and herbal stamps

Have you noticed that all eyes are on South Korea right now when it comes to skin care? The trend is called “K-beauty” and is extremely popular on social media and in stores. Korean skin care often includes rice as an ingredient.

K-Beauty Rice-Mask DIY

Here’s how to make a very simple DIY Korean rice mask that’s currently going viral on TikTok:

Ingredients:

  • 1 small cup of rice (e.g. jasmine rice)
  • 3 small cups of water

Preparation and use:

  • Wash the rice 3 times
  • Boil with the water (without salt)
  • Puree the cooked rice in a blender (add more water depending on the desired consistency)
  • Allow to cool and apply to face.
  • Leave on for 10 to 15 minutes
  • Rinse off

The DIY rice mask will last about one to two weeks in the refrigerator.

However, the K-beauty trend threatens to get out of hand. For example, there is the “10-Step Korean Skincare Routine,” which requires you to buy ten different products, each costing over 50 Euros (depending on the brand, of course). We’d rather use the DIY mask J

DIY beauty from Thailand – Recipes from the Mala Spa in Phuket

DIY Spa Tipps from Mala spa
The Mala Spa on Phuket ©Keemala

Keemala is one of the most unique resorts in Thailand. Located on the island of Phuket, it consists of several villas (all with private pools) surrounded by a natural tropical forest. They also offer a variety of massages and spa treatments (if you are interested, you can find the Mala Spa’s 16-page spa menu here).

For a spa day at home, Keemala sent us the following recipes:

#1 Soothing and hydrating mask

Ingredients:

  • 3 to 4 tablespoons plain yogurt
  • ½ teaspoon honey
  • squeeze of lemon juice

Preparation and use:

  • Mix all the ingredients together.
  • Apply to face and leave on for 15 minutes
  • Rinse with warm water

#2 Keemala DIY body scrub for clear skin

Ingredients:

  • Sea salt (alternative: sugar)
  • Coconut oil
  • A few drops of essential oil (lavender or eucalyptus)

Preparation and use:

  • Gently massage onto wet skin in the shower.
  • Rinse off

#3 Magnesium sulfate foot bath (Espom Salt)

Ingredients:

  • Foot bath tub of warm water
  • ½ cup magnesium sulfate-also known as Epsom or Espuma salt (available at pharmacies or well-stocked drugstores)
  • A few drops of essential oil (your favorite scent)

Preparation and use:

  • Add Espuma salt and oil to the warm water
  • Soak your feet for 15 to 20 minutes

The foot bath helps you relax and softens the skin of your fee” – Keemala

The footbath is also a great base for other foot treatments in your day spa, such as callus removal and pedicures. Afterwards, apply a thick layer of cream to your feet (see below for skin care brand tips).

DIY: Herb stamps for a wellness day at home

Maslina Resort,Spa, Herbal stamps
©Maslina Resort

Maslina Resort is located directly on the coast of the Croatian island of Hvar in the Adriatic Sea. The hotel stands for “Mindful Luxury” and focuses on comfort in harmony with nature. Naturally, the spa facilities are designed with sustainability and mindfulness in mind. The Garden to Skin service applies oils and herbs from the hotel garden directly to the skin.

For your spa day at home, the spa team recommends relaxing herbal pouches.

Ingredients:

  • Fresh medicinal herbs from your own garden or purchased. Rosemary, thyme, lavender and ginger are the perfect blend for relaxation and boosting the immune system.

Preparation:

  • Cut a soft cloth (such as an old shirt) into squares about 6 inches square.
  • Wash the herbs, remove the twigs, and place the leaves in the center of the cloth square.
  • Then form a bundle and tie with string to make small herb stamps.
  • Bring water to a boil and place the herbal pouches in a steamer basket over the hot water. The pouches themselves should remain dry.

Alternative: You can also lightly moisten the stamps and microwave them for about 2 minutes until they are very warm.

How to use:

  • Have a friend or partner place the herbal pouches along your spine, applying gentle pressure, and relax.

The production takes place in South Tyrol and all ingredients come from the region. No wonder our local partners like OLM Nature Escape and My Arbor swear by it. In Germany, you can find the products at the romantic hotel Das Rübezahl in the Allgäu and at STURM in the Rhön.

The Dr. Joseph and all other brands we use are available in our shop. Guests can also contact Markus, our certified massage therapist, for personalized advice.” – OLM Nature Escape

Tip for proper use

Among other things, Team Dr. Joseph lists their “Balancing Toner” as a “bestseller”.

Application:

  • As you can see in this video, the toner is not applied with a cotton pad, but with your hands. Gently tap your décolleté, neck, and face. According to the manufacturer, tapping increases the effect.

After a day at the Green DIY Spa, it’s best to unwind in a relaxing way. Watch a movie to carry the relaxation into the evening.

You’ve probably heard of shinrin yoku or forest bathing, right? It’s a Japanese method of connecting with nature and achieving deep and effective relaxation. Today we would like to take a closer look at it – how it is done, what the benefits are, and where you can try it on vacation under professional guidance.

Forest Bathing Lara © Roman Dachsel www.romandachsel.com
Trainer Lara © Roman Dachsel

What is forest bathing?

Experienced trainer Lara defines forest bathing in the interview as follows:

“Shinrin Yoku (…) is Japanese and means “immersion in the forest air”. It is a mindfulness-enhancing, stress-reducing, light relaxation method that grounds us and playfully connects us with our senses. Seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling (…) (It brings) our mind into the here and now.”

Forest bathing is not a recognized form of therapy, at least in Germany (it is in Japan, by the way!). There are only a few small studies (mainly from Japan) that have found indicators of measurable health benefits through blood tests (e.g. one group of test subjects goes into the forest and the other into the city).

But even if the health effects have not (yet) been scientifically proven, you will feel a number of positive effects.

Because forest bathing …

  1. reduces stress
  2. strengthens the immune system
  3. lifts the mood
  4. improves sleep
  5. increases alertness
  6. stimulates creativity

How does forest bathing work? – Instructions in 6 steps

Even though we recommend guided forest bathing to start with, you can also try out Shinrin Yoku yourself. Here we have summarized instructions from the Oryoki Japan blog and the blog Forestry England:

Preparation:

  1. Pick a forest.
  2. Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and shoes. (You can also take off your shoes for barefoot forest bathing at any time).
  3. Bring as little as possible: It’s best to leave your cell phone & co. at home or at least switched off in your bag.
  4. Anything goes, nothing has to: Approach forest bathing with open expectations and be open to what you experience, or perhaps don’t experience. Everyone is different and every forest bathing experience is different.
  5. You should allow 20 minutes to a maximum of 2 hours for the duration.

Execution:

  1. Find a quiet, undisturbed corner when you arrive in the forest
  2. Concentrate on your senses: look closely, notice details, smell, feel (e.g. bark, leaves), listen – without judgment. Just notice.
  3. Find your pace: Forest bathing is not a walk, but rather lingering and exploring at a mindful pace. Stop or sit whenever you want.
  4. Breathe in deeply through your nose into your stomach and out through your mouth for about twice as long.
  5. Keep your eyes open
  6. Drive away thoughts of everyday life by concentrating on the moment. Don’t force anything and don’t try to force the thoughts away. You will get better at this over time.

Forest bathing on vacation: A good introduction to Shinrin Yoku

If these instructions seem very complicated at the moment and you can’t imagine doing it yourself, you should still give it a chance! Take advantage of courses in your area, or even better, at your vacation destination! Your already relaxed vacation mood will make it much easier for you to get involved in forest bathing.

The health-oriented Hotel Klosterhof – Alpine Hideaway & Spa is located in the beautiful Berchtesgadener Land region. People here are convinced of the benefits of forest bathing. You can experience this, for example, on a guided forest hike to the “Herzstein” power site in Bayerisch Gmain. “We invite our guests to immerse themselves in the forest atmosphere and find lasting relaxation,” the operators write. You can complement your experience with a singing bowl massage in the hotel’s wellness area.

Holistic relaxation in the Allgäu

Long before the term forest bathing became popular, the HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio Allgäu in the small village of Balderschwang offered mindful walks in the forests and nature of the Allgäu. During mindfulness days and yoga retreats, guests are instructed accordingly. Today, they are proud of the scientific validation of their lifelong practice. Here this unique experience in the forest is the perfect complement to many other health and wellness applications originating from around the world that provide deep relaxation and holistically address the body, mind, and spirit.

Shinrin Yoku at the My Arbor tree hotel in South Tyrol

If you love the outdoors, My Arbor invites you to immerse yourself in the forest that surrounds the hotel. Arbor is the Latin word for tree, and the forest is the source of inspiration for this wellness hotel. Located about 15 minutes by car from Bressanone/Brixen, it is built on 34 meter high stilts directly in the forest. From your window, you can look out over the treetops. A special feature of the hotel is the Signature Spa Treatments, where you are assigned to a specific tree species after a medical history and treated accordingly.

👉Guided forest bathing can be found regularly in the hotel’s weekly program.

Luxury hotel, luxury resort, luxury brand, luxury you don’t need and luxury you ought to have – we use the word luxury a lot – but have you ever thought about what it really means?
What do you consider a personal luxury?

Traveling is a luxury

Luxury is a very important topic in the travel industry – after all, traveling is a luxury that not everyone can afford. In Germany, for instance, about 20 percent of the population cannot afford a one-week vacation. According to RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland 2023. Yet Germany is the fourth richest country in the world in terms of total wealth (it ranks twelfth in terms of gross domestic product per capita). In other European countries, such as Romania, Croatia and Greece, more than 50 percent of the population cannot afford a vacation, according to Statista. And what about the rest of the world?

Old luxury, new luxury

According to the Oxford Dictionary, luxury is:

an expensive, lavish, excessive, and self-indulgent expenditure of money or time on things considered pleasurable or enjoyable.

This is the conventional (old) definition. The word luxury itself comes from Latin and means (according to Langenscheidt) extravagance, splendor, debauchery. Historically, luxury was something that the nobility possessed. And the term has always been strongly associated with consumer goods and material wealth.

Luxury goods in a state of flux

What nobility is able to afford has changed a lot over the centuries. For example, chocolate used to be a luxury, but now you can find it in every supermarket – sometimes for just a few cents. If you want “luxury chocolate,” buy handmade organic chocolate from a local producer using Fair Trade cocoa. The luxury here is not necessarily that such chocolate is a few dollars more expensive, but that social and sustainable aspects are also taken into account. By buying this chocolate, you are supporting fair working conditions on the plantations, organic farming, and handicrafts in your region. Shorter transportation routes also mean fewer negative emission.

And with this illustration of chocolate, we have reached the new luxury.
But it goes further.

Intangible values are part of the new luxury

Keemala - Yoga in den Bäumen des Resorts auf Thailand Phuket
Many people consider it a luxury to be able to enjoy nature in peace and quiet. ©Keemala

New luxury is linked to the post-materialist perspective. It suggests that in modern societies, the material needs are so well met that immaterial needs become more important. One indication of this is that political parties increasingly represent “interests” and “values.

Luxury and sustainability

The myth that sustainability and luxury cannot go hand in hand is a persistent one, based on the idea that sustainability equals sacrifice,” explains Green Pearls® founder Stefany Seipp in an interview with Marrybylen, a sustainable wedding and event planning company. Fine dining can be local, a spa treatment can be relaxing with natural cosmetics, and amazing hotel suites can be built with eco-friendly materials.

Sustainable luxury vacations at Green PearlsⓇ accommodations

In our work with hotels and vacation rentals, we often hear that guests’ priorities have shifted and that they now value luxury differently. Here are some of the new luxury values and where and how they are being implemented:

Barefoot luxury

Luftaufnahme vom Eco Resort Zeavola auf Koh Phi Phi in Thailand
A fine sandy beach is the best place for barefoot luxury. © Zeavola Resort

Barefoot Luxury describes a vacation in a relaxed atmosphere in luxurious resorts. You are in touch with nature through the sand under your feet, but you have your own beach villa.

Zeavola in Thailand is dedicated to this new form of comfort and elegance. The eco-resort on the dream island of Koh Phi Phi Leh (about an hour by boat from Phuket) describes itself as a “barefoot resort”. Stay in natural and tastefully decorated villas and suites, and walk barefoot to the beach, dive shop, pool, Thai cooking class or restaurant. The resort is committed to protecting nature and corals.

Time as a luxury

Time is seen as a modern, intangible luxury and is perceived by many hoteliers from their guests. The whole slow movement with slow travel and slow food  is part of the “time trend”. Travelers are looking for a balance to their otherwise stressful lives.

At the My Arbor Hotel in South Tyrol near Brixen, late risers can enjoy breakfast until 2 p.m., and all other hotel amenities can be arranged around their own time preferences. At Okelmann’s Eco-Hotel in the German village of Warpe, guests can relax during multi-day yoga retreats. The family-run hotel is also part of the Slow Food movement.

Enjoying nature as a new luxury

Summit Lodges
© Summit Lodges Pfunds

According to Lidewij “Li” Edelkoort (often referred to in the media as the world’s most famous trend researcher), enjoying nature is also part of the new luxury. Walking through wildflower meadows, climbing mountains, wading through rivers and eating hand-baked farmhouse bread are all part of people’s current desire to reconnect with nature.

An example of this is the Summit Lodges Pfunds in Tyrol. These are cabin-style vacation homes in the middle of the Austrian mountains

If you want to experience the Thai countryside, the “Villa Wonderland” Keemala has been built amidst the treetops of a tropical forest. The owners describe the forest as “magical” and you can walk through the plant world as if in an open-air greenhouse, enjoy waterfalls and watch birds.

Pleasure vacation

Culinary indulgence is also part of the luxury world. Gourmet travel is all the rage – although the classic “caviar and champagne” luxury is outdated. Instead, the buzzwords are creative, sustainable and local, and there is a growing demand for vegan alternatives.

The Paradiso Pure.Living on the Seiser Alm (South Tyrol) now offers a culinary concept by the vegan chef Aggeliki Charami from Greece, who is considered a real trendsetter for new tastes.

When it comes to a vacation of pure indulgence, the Birkenhof***** Spa & Genussresort in Germany’s Upper Palatinate Lake District is a top address. The hotel has five stars and a restaurant with two Michelin stars. While luxury and spoiling are the name of the game, the hotel is also committed to sustainability, generating its own green energy through a combined heat and power plant and solar panels.

Another hotel known for its culinary delights is the Waldhotel Fletschhorn in Saas Fee, Switzerland. This small boutique hotel has been known for decades for its exquisite – and regional – cuisine, and is popular with non-hotel guests as well. The large wine cellar is also renowned. Guests receive wine recommendations with each course of their meal.

Social commitment is a luxury

Being the ” helping hand ” is a privilege and part of the new value-based luxury. While we are critical of voluntourism, there are sustainable accommodations that are also socially committed and that you can support simply by staying there. For example, the Farmhouse Smiling Gecko in Cambodia. The Smiling Gecko project is a “help for self-help” project that trains local people in various trades, agriculture and hospitality. The Farmhouse Resort alone employs about 40 people at an above average salary. So here you can lounge by the pool and do good at the same time!

If you are ever in the beautiful German city of Freiburg im Breisgau, we recommend the Green City Hotel Vauban as a place to stay. This ecologically and brightly decorated hotel with a green facade employs people with physical and mental disabilities as an integration company. Thanks to its central location, you can reach all sights quickly and environmentally friendly by public transport.

Wellness hotels are the latest trend

Swim, sauna, steam, then relax in the quiet room. Maybe even a massage or a facial? For many, it means treating themselves to something special. Wellness is clearly a luxury, especially as clean, fresh water becomes an increasingly scarce and valuable resource worldwide. Sustainable hotels are careful not to waste excessive amounts of water in their spa areas and bathrooms.

The Hotel Luise in the Bavarian city of Erlangen takes a particularly sustainable approach. The “regenerative” rooms have “astronaut showers” that filter the water you use and pump it directly out of the shower head as new shower water. This way, you can take a shower without a guilty conscience.

For a truly expansive spa experience, look no further than the Lifestyle Hotel Zum Kurfürsten in Germany’s Mosel wine region. There are three pools and a natural swimming pond (no chemicals). The spa area covers a total of 4,000 square feet and includes several saunas, a forest infrared sauna, and steam rooms. There are also treatment rooms where you can be treated by TCM therapists.

Health

“Health is the new wealth,” they say. Healthiness and longevity are clearly among the immaterial trends also present in the travel industry. We owe the existence of “grand hotels” to the “spa hotels” that bourgeois families treated themselves to as a luxury in the 19th century. Today, however, it is no longer just the classic health spa guests who are doing something for their health, but a general trend.

One such sustainable health hotel is the OCÈANO Health Spa Hotel on the Spanish volcanic island of Tenerife. With fitness, thalassotherapy and healthy eating programs, you can enjoy a vacation while boosting your health.

In Germany, Hotel Klosterhof – Alpine Hideaway & Spa is a health-oriented hotel run by a practicing physician. It offers nutritional counseling, various fasting regimens, and is a popular place for babymoons.

The luxury to travel and see the world

Finally, we return to our starting point: Travel is a luxury in itself. Imagine, for example, a trip to Nepal. At our Green PearlsⓇ partner, The Pavilions Himalayas – The Farm, you will find yourself amidst the fantastic panorama of the famous Himalayas and can explore temples with local guides or go on a wildlife safari where you might even encounter a wild tiger!

This lodge is unique in that it was created to introduce local farmers to organic farming. The hotel is committed to the local community as well as the environment and groundwater protection, as organic farming does not use pesticides.

So here is another symbiosis of travel, luxury, and sustainability.

What is your personal definition of luxury? We would love to hear in the comments!

Are you flirting with the vegan lifestyle or already living it? How about a completely vegan weekend in South Tyrol? Perfect for relaxing, trying it out or maybe showing your partner how diverse a vegan lifestyle can be 😉 South Tyrol is home to the first completely vegan hotel in Italy. It not only offers climate-friendly cuisine but also great activities for couples or active vacationers.

LA VIMEA – A completely vegan hotel in the town of Naturno

LA VIMEA, located in the tourist town of Naturno in Val Venosta, South Tyrol, is the ideal place to relax and take some time off. The adults-only hotel offers daily yoga sessions and a wellness area complete with a saltwater pool, natural swimming pond, sauna and Ayurvedic treatments.

A special feature is the vegan theme. Here, vegans will find a hotel where they won’t have to ask about ingredients or find bacon served at the table next to them. As for the cuisine, you can relax and enjoy the surprising creations of Chef Luca Sordi. But there’s more! For the team of LA VIMEA, vegan doesn’t only apply to food, but to all other aspects of life. For example, the furnishings are made entirely of plant-based and cruelty-free materials. You won’t find leather or sheepskin here.

Veganism is more climate-friendly

One benefit of a vegan lifestyle: It tends to be more climate-friendly. According to the German Federal Environmental Agency, a vegan diet produces about 40% less CO2 emissions than a conventional diet that includes dairy and meat products. Of course, this doesn’t apply to every single meal, but to the diet as a whole. To make the eco-advantage perfect, LA VIMEA also sources its food as regionally and seasonally as possible.

LA VIMEA weekend specials

The vegan hotel offers some special deals tailored to weekend stays. What we particularly appreciate: South Tyrol is easily accessible by train from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. So nothing stands in the way of a sustainable and vegan weekend. 🙂

LA VIMEA has recently launched a new package for couples. It’s called “Romantic Vegan Getaway“:

When you arrive on Friday, one of the most beautiful double rooms with balcony will be waiting for you. And to start the weekend off right, you will receive a welcome gift of organic vegan chocolate and a bottle of Prosecco Rosé (with or without alcohol). Afterwards, perhaps a refreshing dip in the saltwater pool or the natural swimming pond.

Between 5:30 pm and 6:45 pm, an aperitif platter with small snacks and a signature cocktail or mocktail is available – even in your room upon request. For dinner, dress up and enjoy the restaurant’s vegan cuisine. Afterwards, especially on warm summer evenings, we recommend a short evening stroll through the village of Naturno, with its 6,000 inhabitants, to enjoy the special atmosphere.

On Saturday, an active outdoor experience awaits you. The hotel will provide you with two modern e-bikes for the whole day. Breakfast will be served at the hotel and 2 picnic lunches will be packed for your bike tour.

Tip: Download beautiful bike tours around Naturns on komoot.

After a day of activity, dinner at the restaurant will taste even better. Especially if you relax at the spa first.

On Sunday, you will check out late, giving you time to relax after breakfast. Perhaps you would like to start the day with a yoga class on the sundeck in front of the hotel. Community yoga is an integral part of the hotel here. And as an extra highlight you can enjoy the forest sauna for one hour. At 15:00 your journey home begins.
